I think she is planning to do more research than 'google' -.-. Perhaps she intends to interview some peeps. The site I work for has to go to Italy sometimes to interview devs that's expensive...Abandon4093 said:I never said you were referencing that, but it obviously put a pin in your theory when there's already been a donation controversy surrounding them. And they had a legitimate reason to request money.Moonlight Butterfly said:I wasn't referring to the time they asked for money for Alison. I never said she did ask for the full 160. But she didn't stop people from donating. She doesn't need 160grand to make some videos about sexism. And a good scam artist doesn't ask for massive amounts upfront. That's a surefire way to get nothing. She didn't ask for 160 grand she asked for 6,000. Which looking at the other youtube projects on kickstarter is pretty reasonable. I know that Doublefine asked for 150,000 dollars to make JUST the documentary part of their kickstarter.
Asking for a little is a good way to get a lot.
And I'm pretty sure the double fine thing was to fund the game, they were making a documentary of the game making process as a reward for those who donated.
Indepth research..... google? This is not someone making vids with a webcam. She has an actual camera crew and wants to do in depth research.
We're talking about video games here. Not the Arc of the Covenant.
Translation 'I disagree with you therefore you have an agenda.'And yeah the fact that you are calling her a scam artist when those allegations are ridiculous makes you look like you have a different agenda. I don't think It's too much of a stretch of the imagination to think that people are just looking for a different way to attack her.
It's not clearly ridiculous. She's making a video series about sexism and she's gotten 160,000 out of it.
I don't know why you should look forward to her video. Uwe Boll makes bad movies, why would you look forward to his next one?sideshow said:as upset as i am i will say this. atleast she was beaten up in virtual reality rather real life.
To be honest, i'd like to see the first episode of this Tropes VS Women and THEN make my opinion. as for the current reaction.......i still think i'm asleep and this didn't really happen.
......or it did happen and the person who made that flash game has their electronics taken by Jim Sterling's hammer. and by taken i mean broken into tiny bits
What's wrong with my logic? I don't think those games are good either.ElPatron said:Which were all on that airport with no uniforms on.itsthesheppy said:"russian soldiers"
I don't necessarily disagree with you. I disagree with your logic. Games have been made where you can punch George W. Bush, Bin Laden, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and I bet that if I look for it, there will be one for George Lucas too.
Kickstarter doesn't work that way, you can't block people form donating to you, you take in all the money you get until your preset deadline. Considering feminist frequency has been around for years, it seems odd that you think her nefarious get rich quick scheme is just taking effect now. They people throwing money at her are ridiculous, not the girl herself.Abandon4093 said:I never said she did ask for the full 160. But she didn't stop people from donating. First off, do you like to roleplay as flabby muffin topped average girls or is the slender attractive body type not something of a fantasy to you? Especially since so many of these "sex objects" are capable intelligent fighters and powerful figures. Im willing to bet that if you had the opportunity you would choose a "sexy" body over that of a bland or unattractive one and that your choice in game avatars would reflect that.Moonlight Butterfly said:Lol no. Just no. My power fantasy isn't to solely exist to look pretty.
As for cosplayers well they don't have much choice if they want to portray the characters accurately do they.
The way she portrayed the video made her point come across that its only a huge problem in video games.Moonlight Butterfly said:Please point out where Sarkeesian says that games are the only place this stuff happens because I'm pretty sure that she has NEVER said that. In fact she has many other videos commenting on different media.
It is never used to forward the plot as to hur dur save the princess. The only time she ever gets kidnapped is right before the final confrontation. Like I said Zelda is the personification of the world of Hyrule that is being fought for.Something that annoys me about Zelda is that yeah she gets set up as a pirate or whatever then she STILL gets kidnapped just to forward the plot. Why? Ganondorf can still take over the kingdom without a damsel in distress. Zelda could be an ultimate badass ninja pirate and she would still get kidnapped by Ganon it's kind of lame.
Please tell me that you know a girl who will never wear a low cut shirt or tight fitting pants. If you can tell me and show me pictures of what they look like for an entire year then yes I will buy the whole sexualized thing on the low cut tight pants until then that isn't sexualizing that is making the character more human.Yeah fighting games are still the biggest offenders of half naked ladies but thats a point to prove Sarkeesians point that there is a problem not a point against it. Also 'normally dressed' is a really loose term. Most women in video games are not dressed for what they are going to do. Look at the Unskippable episode of Never Dead for example. Yay tactical sweater dress and heels! Even if women are in sensible clothes they usually have a low cut top or tight pants. You almost never see women in full combat gear.
This part here makes me do this:It's hilarious that some people are attacking her as a scammer. People gave her that money willingly she didn't extort it.
If you disagree with her point of view have the stones to say so don't hide behind some made up excuse.
I'm saying that a character who is the sum of her looks is not what I am looking for in character. Femshep is comparatively plain but I would rather play her than Ivy from soul calibur with her baps hanging out any day. Women want to be heroes too not just eye candy for guys.BRex21 said:First off, do you like to roleplay as flabby muffin topped average girls or is the slender attractive body type not something of a fantasy to you? Secondly, do you think a males power fantasy is to be a 100kilo vapid meatshield? You would probably be right, but that does nothing to mitigate that it is still both a pathetic existence and blatant objectification in a sense of utility. the man is just being portrayed as more of an appliance than a sex toy.
Most of the reason im against this is that this is a woman out to prove a point, not doing research to find a conclusion but to find favourable facts to prove her conclusion. Look at the way she gathered he "hate mail", namely spamming sites like 4chan notorious for housing trolls. She went out of her way to gather that from places she knew she could get it for added shock value. This is a person with a recurring pattern of lack of research and lack of context in her videos who quite frankly is using a hot button issue (not to mention instances of blatant intellectual property rights infringement) to make money.
What this issue needs is coherent debate from multiple perspectives not trolls stirring up controversy and crying when they don't get their way and not gaming press that licks the boots of anyone using their god given access to a vagina to cry victim.
Soooo let me get this straight.Abandon4093 said:You're expecting her to do the kind of research that you do for [assuming dissertation level] essays?Moonlight Butterfly said:I think she is planning to do more research than 'google' -.-. It's not clearly ridiculous. She's making a video series about sexism and she's gotten 160,000 out of it.
I'm a History BA and one essay alone definitely took more research than glancing at google. That and beyond is the level she is aiming for.
I think saying she only asked for 6,000 so therefore she must have wanted more is a bit much. She clearly wanted 6,000 because that is what she asked for. She only got so much more because of the publicity she received due to the harassment. Which is actually pretty funny when you think about it.
I don't think she can stop people donating until the kickstarter is finished. That's how it works.
Accusing her of scamming is frankly just ridiculous, sorry. You may as well accuse everyone on kickstarter of the same thing.
I think you'll be unpleasantly surprised.
Beyond web-searches she can do interviews and that's about it. There isn't a great deal of history to spool through here. Much less relevant history.
I didn't say she wanted more because she asked for 6, I said that asking for massive amounts of money is a surefire way not to get it. Asking for low amounts of money and flirting with hot button topics is a great way to kick up controversy and rake in the donations.
And I'm pretty sure you can put a stop on the donations, especially after the amount of controversy the Rocketfish stuff garnered.
And no it's not ridiculous. You can keep saying that as often as you like, it's not going to make it true.
She dibbled around on a touchy subject, asked for donations for a video series and let people roll out 160g's.... For a video series.
She could have done this for free.
And I'd say most people on kickstarter are scamming people. They come up with a heart tugging or controversial spiel, then ask for donations for shit they could do for free.
The site was meant to be about giving companies and individuals with feasibly accomplishable ideas and no startup capital the ability to buy the expensive programs they need etc.
That isn't what I got from her video. I got that she wanted to make a video and do 'research'. Not really seeing the need for donations there.
This one always cracks me up. A "scam" is when someone is tricked into paying money, not when someone spends money on something you wouldn't personally spend money on or something that rustles your jimmies.Abandon4093 said:where I said that I think most people on Kickstarter are scamming people?
