Honestly, I do not care what grievances these people have. Their entire argument was made invalid when they started looting, burning and attacking people.
If there's a problem, address it. Protest by all means, but don't try and bring everyone down to your level.
If they expect sympathy, they get none from me.

Truth in what Fox News says? Don't be absurd. The riots were a bunch of wankers using some half-baked excuse to act like wankers, trash stuff and steal things.

But typical of Fox News, they pick one thing from our country they obviously don't like, then blamed the entire thing on that.

So, I was typing an essay on my laptop, sitting in the living room, when my dad turned on Fox News then left to get the mail. The nice people over at Fox News were discussing the English riots. I started to listen to their discussion on the subject, because I havent been following it at all and I descided to share what I could gather from what they were saying.
It seemed like they were saying that the riots were caused by wellfare. They were saying that there's a big population in England of two parent families (and other kinds of families too) who haven't worked a day in 15 years, because they were able to live of wellfare. And the kids growing up on wellfare developed an entitled attitude, that they were entitled to stuff. Now that the wellfare is drying up (I have no idea what your guy's wellfare status is, just saying) those same kids are taking to the streets to take what they feel entitled to.
Is there any truth to that at all?
Please dont just say that the people at Fox News are crazy, its a discussion killer.
And please dont shoot the messanger, Im only sharing what I heard.
To be honest, this is pretty much true, a simplified version however.

Just because it's Fox News doesn't mean that there aren't some truths behind political and/or ideological opposition to a welfare-based society.

It's like most internet forum posters are pro the things Fox News is against, because Fox News is against it, and for no other reason.

The fact of the matter is, the more government shelters you from the risks (and rewards) of living a self-determined, independent life that expects highly of you, and wraps a baby blanket around you, the weaker, dumber, and less moral you become. Necessity is the mother of invention, and if there is no impetus for being a productive member of society, the results will be obvious. Life isn't fair, and it is made even more unfair by forcing those who have decided to live a fulfilling, independent life to shelter others from life's inherent unfairness.
...except your opinion on welfare is completely irrelevant to this thread, because it's about Fox News' decision to blame the riots on welfare, not whether welfare is good or bad.

And no, Fox is full of shit on this one. Their analysis has pretty much nothing to do with the riots or Britain; they're taking something topical from another country and repurposing it to a) make it relevant to their American-centric audience and b) use it as ammunition in a pre-existing agenda with fuck all to do with the actual events.

The benefits system in Britain is full of holes, just like it is in many other countries. It is sickeningly easy to claim more benefits than you have the right to but that is not the root of our social problem.

The issue is with attitude, not bureaucracy, two generations of British citizens have grown up being told that they have nothing to prove and that has led to the abuse of the welfare system, the benefit cheating and dependence culture is a symptom of the condition, not the condition itself. This attitude has also led to everyone being terrified to offend anyone else, so the louder, more violently and more inappropriately you behave, the more you will be indulged because if you are punished it'll be an affront to what you perceive to be your human rights.

Our culture has been too long without hardship. In a world where we are getting better and better at avoiding international war, famine, disease and overt tyranny, the populace take what they have for granted, and before long we wonder how we ever lived without a supermarket around the corner, or an inside toilet, or the coddling and cotton-wool protection of the state.

A message to the lawless thugs that are defiling my country: Let go of your ridiculous misconceptions about what really matters and learn what civilisation is. Take your bloody plastic bullets and be thankful the police aren't using real ones, because that is what you deserve.

"Well this wouldn't have happened if they were more right wing like us, because America never has any public violence and our country is perfect in every respect"
is what I heard. Sorry to be a discussion killer but the truth really is that Fox News is all bullshit, all the time and if you disagree go ahead and report me.

Isn't Fox American?

I think they should report the news without wearing trouser, it's kind of hard to understand what they say while they talk out of their arse.
Actually they're Australian, they just found a bigger audience in America.

The riots had fuck all to do with anything. It was mindless scum being, guess what? That's right, mindless scum. The protests outside the police station in London were caused by the shooting. The rioters were just plain old-fashioned morons who have given the "kids are feral" crowd a metric shit ton of ammunition.

Nice one douchebags, thanks for ensuring my younger brothers will be feared and reviled and ensuring their generation will be looked on with disgust. I really appreciate that, now would you kindly kill yourselves and stop using the air more deserving people should be breathing.

Fox News is 99% commentary so I wouldn't take anything they say with any factual implication.

I find it hilarious that their trying to inject reason into a riot. Most of the time riots have absolutely no reason behind it, hell the ones that do tend to be called revolts not riots. Riots are just a group of people being idiots and deciding that "It's time to mess some stuff UP!"

Not really a surprise that their using something like this to try and paint Welfare with the "OMFG ITS TEH EBIL!" brush.

Fox just hates the poor, like the rest of the far right of the US. They always attack welfare here, and by saying having welfare causes riots, it is trying to make people afraid of welfare here.

From what I understand, it was based on welfare being taken away all right, but had nothing to do with entitlement. Poor people for whom no jobs are available, who grew up without hope of escape from poverty, for whom welfare checks and foodstamps were the only form of income they could secure, THEY are the reason the riots started, although it's picked up all sorts of immoral folks just rioting for the chance at looting. So yeah, everyone's right and everyone's wrong, just like always. Even (shudder) Fox News.

I can't blame the rioters. Everything on the news (Not Fox, I said news) is about how all these people are criminals, scum, will face the "full feeling of the law!" and such. Right from the start the British govt has seemed like it was pushing an us vs them attitude.

If I'm one of these folks, and I'm guilty suddenly because of my social standing, then I might as well go out and have some fun at least. If nothing else, I might cause some rich asshole insurance company owner to have to pay out a little.

You can only shit on the underclasses so long before something like this happens. People are quick to point out this isn't political, somehow making it less important or more selfish. But all riots basically boil down to the same thing. I expect we'll see more.
