Most gamers I know has such an individual taste in music, from rock to jazz to dubstep, so I do not believe that this stereotype is true.

Honestly, spending time in music forums teaches me that music nerds actually do despise video game nerds, just because they think they all only listen to anime and video game soundtracks
I'm both a music and a video games nerd, to me there is nothing more beautiful than moonlight sonata or the music of Jeremy Soule (of TES:IV fame)

Conversely friend of mine that is neither has, in my opinion, terrible taste in music. So it's all subjective.

I'm afraid to say that you have inadvertently made another gross generalisation.

Love music because you love music, it doesn't matter where it comes from.

I think gamers don't tend to like mainstream music. But will usually favour towards lesser known bands or one's they just enjoy. It's all the individuals personal choice, music isn't as black and white, good or bad as people say it is.

A lot of gamers seem to be metal heads. They don't have terrible taste in music, it's just not what I'd listen to.

Nope. It is talked about frequently on numerous music boards and blogs.
I've never heard of this stereotype before and you have me intrigued, could you perhaps link us some of these blogs and threads that you speak off?

On topic: You can only draw some loose correlations with gaming and music, because music isn't what defines gaming subculture. However, there are a few loose patterns- many gamers like types of rock and heavy metal because they are white, middle class and non-mainstream. Many like anime music because anime is tied up with gaming as being both nerdy hobbies. And then of course there is gaming music itself, like 8 bit for instance.

lots of gamers have terrible taste in music
lots of non-gamers have terrible taste in music
lots of gamers have good taste in music
lots of non-gamers have good taste in music

the only real difference is that non-gamers aren't likely to sing along to "fight like a Krogan, run like a leopard..." (which is admittedly rather catchy)

Personally I listen to a little bit of "everything" and... I suppose that can be perceived as terrible by some. I, however, think that some (if not most) of the big mainstream hits these days tend to be terrible. Back to the point of subjectivity.

Anyway, shuffling through my Winamp playlist I figure I'll post a list of 15 semi-randomly selected songs I listen to:

Weird Al Yaknovic - Pretty Fly for a Jedi
Michael Jackson - Beat It
TETRA-FANG - Innocent Trap [Tribute to Basshaa] <Kamen Rider Kiva - TV>
Robbie Williams - Killing Me
Jim Carrey - Cuban Pete (Remix) <The Mask - Movie>
Starving Trancer feat. Xue - Kagaku Sentai Dynaman <Kagaku Sentai Dynaman - TV>
Bryan Adams - Everything I Do
Ishimoto Takeharu feat. Hanaeryca - Someday <The World Ends With You - Video Game>
Roxette - Sleeping In My Car
Ron Wasserman - Go Go Power Rangers - Euro Version 1 <Power Rangers - TV>
Meja - All 'Bout the Money (Hex Hector Radio Edit)
Bruce Adler - Arabian Nights <Aladdin - Movie>
Tom Jones - Thunderball
Robyn - Dancing On My Own
Saint Smythe - Ultimate Orgy of Homosexuality

...Okay, so maybe I have "peculiar" taste in music at best. >_>

Well, if you say that liking bands like AC/DC, Linkin Park and so on is having bad taste in music, then yes, gamers have bad taste in music.

I've gotta say... I don't exactly -have- a taste in music. I like all genres. Certainly not everything from every genre, and I do like certain genres over others (say, metal and electro over R&B and hip hop). So I couldn't really tell you.

I do not know where would you get such a stereotype from. I never heard such a statement from anyone ever.

And yes, music taste is subjective.

It's not true. Every gamer I know likes AC/DC. Can you honestly say it's bad music?
Actually yes. In my opinion they aren't good, they just have a few good hits.
You are both gamers and have different tastes in music therefore the stereotype is wrong.

The thing is music is subjective right? Like most art forms right?

Then why are there art critics, and people in museums calling stuff sh*t... (with degrees in the matter and stuff)

Sure its subjective, but then there is having a good TASTE in music, I might not like to listen to Mozart, but I sure as heck agree that his music is amazing.

Lol I have never ever heard this stereotype in my life and I'm pretty old.

Some of the lads I game with are DJ'S so I would have to disagree since people who aren't gamers enjoy thier music.

Everything is subjective.

Far too broad. Gamers just happen to be people who share a common hobby. However, this doesn't determine their taste in music. And define:terrible please.
What's your avatar from?
Man I was excited because I thought someone agreed/disagreed with me. Oh well, many people have asked me about my avatar and I'm still glad that happens :)

Just to let you know I did agree with you. No one person can corner the market on what is 'bad taste'. :D

Yes. Terrible.

Your typical gamer has 3 tastes in music:
A: Top 40 whatever the fuck is being hyped on the internet/by the record companies
B: Electronic music, which is a mixed bag, but trance, dubstep, and chiptunes are the main ones nowadays
C: Classic rock because it was in Guitar Hero.

These are all bad because two are too exclusive to one specific thing and one is complete shit no matter how you slice it.

There is so much to music and you could give less of a fuck because some asshole on the internet isn't talking about it.
