As the latest numbers put the average age of gamers somewhere around the mid-30s, I was just curious about a couple of points.

First off, as one of the 'older set' myself, I'm wondering how many of the over-30 crowd hang out here ....

And I'm also very curious as to which games the over-30 gamers are really into.

I'm 36 ... and got into video games through an unhealthy obsession with table-top gaming. So, it's not surprising that my heart belongs to RPGs - most especially BioWare's offerings. My brain is currently being eaten by Dragon Age.

Anyone else? Or am I the lone oldie in a sea of whippersnappers.

*Shakes fist* Get off my lawn, you punks!
No, you aren't alone. I'm in my late 30's as well. *high fives*

I am over 30 and I'll try pretty much any game you put in front of me. I do however gravitate towards games I can play with my friends, so online multiplayer seems to be the best for me. Other than those, sports or strategy for me mainly.

And then there are board games :)

I'm 22 myself, but I have a few 30+ gamer friends: one who just turned 30 and another who is 35.

My dad is 72 and he is obsessed with online FPS, especially CS, so if you ever hear an old Japanese man shouting expletives at you then that's why.

My mom is ... she doesn't like me saying her age. But she plays SecondLife. She has two accounts on WoW as well, with her lvl 50+ Night Elves. I hate those things. I still think it's cool she plays, though :)

i don't know why 30+ people even game.

there are so much greater things to do. i'm 16 and in Holland that means NO DRIVING!(we are allowed to drink though)

but not being allowed to go long distances without involving my mom or the train, really bothersome.
Well, just because we can drive doesn't mean there is somewhere we want to go that we haven't gone to. I somehow doubt that you would be as fired-up to go on a road trip after working a 12 hour shift when the next day holds the same thing. But you can't just go home eat and immediately sleep either. You need some time to unwind from the day and it's usually television, books, newspapers, or video games.

You should do a post in the off-topic forum for the ideas you and others have of things you want to do once you can drive. I'm sure it would be popular!

Uh, because gaming is a lot of fun? What, I can drive, so suddenly I should stop enjoying games? That makes no sense.
no, but i would.

it's just my personal view, when i'm 18 i wanna go places not stay in my livingroom for hours playing whatever game.

doesn't go up for everyone though.
Rokkolpo, i think your view on videogames is a bit.. warped, it's not so much a life style as it is a form of entertainment, some poeple spend their time at home watching TV, i spend mine play games.

Trust me on this i've been driving (legaly) since i was 17, so thats 9 years now, it doesn't really open up the world, sure festivals and gigs at the weekend become easier to get to, but your still gunna have to make a commute to school or university, or your work place, and spend a large amount of your day there, and all your friends are going to want to hitch a ride. infact pretty soon after i past my driving test, days started seeming a lot shorter. This is an even bigger problem if your commute is long. i live with 4 friends, one of whom has to travel for 2 hours to get to work (by car) and it takes her nearly 4 to get back, so she arrives home long after the rest of us have all eaten, gone out to a bar etc, and is often too tired to do anything.

So your gap year is the only time you're really gunna be able to "go places" apart from that you'll have to wait for the holidays. Unless you're making a lot of money (a whole lot of money!) life's still gunna be a bit same'y.

And then, when you are hungover and tired from being out on the lash for 4 nights on the trot, who is there to comfort you?
Your partner? No you stink of stale booze!
Your parents? No you declared independence and moved out because being 18 is so mature.
Your pets? No, you stink remember and they can smell you from further away than even the most caring lover.
Your PS3? Yes, it's always there for you and never rejects you, not even with a red ring of doom (sorry XBoxers).

I'm 32. I did going out and hardly ever coming home, but that didn't mean that I didn't want to destroy the lads at a Sensible Soccer tournament or two when we ran out of money or steam to go clubbing (showing my age now, sorry).

I just turned 30, and i don't understand why people are so surprised that 30-35 is the majority of gamers. just because why don't jump on headsets online and talk shit doesn't mean we don't play. SHit almost everyone i know from 29-33 plays video games. I mean if ya think about it we are the video game generation. All the "classics" -_- were released when we were kids, and most have us have been playing video games ever since.

I'm not 30 yet, got a year to go, but I've been gaming since I was a little kid, and it's a part of me at this point. I have family and friends who don't understand, who think it's a kids' thing, and those who don't understand my language. I have my boyfriend and plenty of gamer friends in the 23-35ish age bracket, and we're all adults with responsibilities, most os us completed our education, and have other interests, but we all still love gaming. I don't forsee this changing either.

And I hope Susan doesn't mind, but I feel like it's appropriate to pull out one of my favorite Escapist articles ever - http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_92/516-Strangers-in-a-Strange-Land

This piece partly inspired me to submit my own article ideas to the magazine, and I had my first piece four months later. I recall mentioning The Escapist and one of my articles to another woman (A New York Times writer) at a publishing party and I got a pause, an "oh wow" (with an odd look), and then she told me she had no idea gaming journalism even existed.

My dad is 44 and my grandad is in his 60's, hell, even my mum, even though she doesn't play games herself, likes to watch us and will even add her opinions on how to do a certain mission or task (in short she is a back seat gamer :D) and they both love videogames. My dad has yet to give me back my Fallout 3. Nah, you're never too old to game and its great when you have older family members that have similar interests to you, cos it means games become a fantastic bonding experience and no-one gets left out. :D

Go non-creapy older gamers. Represent...

Edit: Yeah, my parents do not play, and I have not realized how many older gamers there are here.

MY Dad's 38, and he loves Borderlands and John woo's stranglehold.

I'm 13, but I usually play the games my dad does.

Although I'm only 19 so don't actualy count towards the main topic, I do know quite a few gamers around the age of 30, and the majority of them, like yourself, tend to play RPGs.

Great article. Makes me feel lucky that I can be so 'out' as an older female gamer. *chuckle* Hell, co-workers come to me for advice on what to buy their kids...and I'm slowly turning a couple of my non-gamer friends into BioWare addicts...hehehe.
My mother bought my NVidia 9800 for me for my bday last year...my inlaws gave me my Xbox for Christmas...
Yeah...it's the good life...

I'm 34 and hang out here.

I started playing arcade games (real quarter eating machines) and table top games.
