I'll also add the "Soul Blazer trilogy" on the SNES (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma), which are very good action RPGs that retro gamers now tend to love, but didn't get much attention when released.
ooooooo I remember "Soul Blazer" but I didn't know it was a trilogy.
I'd actually recommend the other two games much more highly, although I'd be hard pressed to tell which which is better between those two. Gaia has better pacing and the combat is perhaps better designed, while Terranigma is overall a larger game, perhaps more a traditional RPG, and has probably the better overall story. If you're into SNES era RPGs both are must-plays.

Also, there seems to be some ambiguity on what constitutes a cult classic, I thought the general understanding was that it's something which has a devoted fanbase but did not do well commercially, and may or may not have done well critically?

Critical acclaim isn't too important. The primary element is the cult.

OT:I don't know if Freedom Force is a cult classic. It's underrated an all, but I haven't gauged the devotion of it's fanbase.

Sacrifice. Excellent RTS. My favourite, even edging out DoW2. No one has ever, ever heard of it, though the critics loved it. Not sure what's up with that.
I loved that game!! Always had to start again when I got bored of the creature selection I had built up though. Normally around the last few levels. The gods arguments were a lot of fun tho. Still play it during lan games with my brothers occationally
Someone knows about the game? Neat. I only have two complaints, really. Pyro and Charnel levels get to be unplayably hard, and the final level is invariably a joke >_>

Also, animate dead/dragons are borked.

The Legend of Dragoon? Probably would qualify under cult classic.

I'd say so, even with PS1 graphics there are still some non-cutscene visual moments that make you crap yourself.

2:15 and 4:18 for the good bits.

...Probably Halo 3. I mean, no one got that game.

In all seriousness, probably Munch's Oddyssey. Maybe Duke Nukem, 1 & 2. Everyone just thinks of Duke as he is in that hunk of junk "Duke Nukem 3D".

Perhaps Commander Keen, as well. I love that game.

I don't agree with that being called a cult classic. I think it is just a regular classic. It is very mainstream.

Fallout 1+2
Doom (sold well but STILL has a small dedicated community that builds WADs)
Baldur's Gate 1+2
Again, maybe I have the wrong definition of cult classic but I don't think these fit the bill. They were extremely popular and extremely mainstream.

I'll add one of my own though. "Giants: Citizen Kabuto". So rarely spoken of but those hwo have played it loved it.

Hrm...

Possibly Xenogears (dont really think its a cult classic, as much as the fans of it are practically a cult)

Definitely Vagrant story.

Jade empire

The longest journey as well as Dreamfall.

SaGa frontier 2 (the only Saga game truly worth owning... I said after I have bought all of them at full release price)

Panzer Dragoon Zwei (perhaps Orta as well)

Dragon force

Silent Hill 4: The room

Indigo prophecy/Farenheit

Long list of others that i cannot think of at the moment.

Killer 7. Bought that game on a whim out of a bargain bin, easily the best ten bucks I've ever spent on a game.

And for the $20 price mark, props go to Deadly Premonition. You may be as ugly as sin and about as insane as the old folks home on LSD and Bingo Night, but damn you are a wonderful game.
