Starcraft. I have no idea why a game of such low graphical standards could be an official sport in South Korea.
Supposedly the release of Starcraft coincided with South Korea's age of technological advancement and nationwide infrastructure upgrades.
Basically internet cafes popped up, Starcraft was the newest RTS game, people played it, liked it, more started playing, more broadband cafes occurred, even more players, etc. Then it just spiraled out of control from there, and "esports" in Skorea became an actual serious event.
In short, it was a huge coincidence. Because Korea is keeping SC alive, it remains on shelves, people keep buying it, and the game just won't die.
This is erroneously used as a reason that SC is the best RTS ever, when in fact it is not.
It was just a good RTS that coincided with Korea's economic and infrastructural boom, and because of that boom, it sold many copies and is still being "played" today.
