I'm very pacifistic when it comes to defending games, even my favourite ones. I'll happily admit that Silent Hill has dodgy controls and horrible voice acting. I'll gladly allow someone to point out that Halo is drab and repetitive. I'll even smile and agree when someone points out that Fallout 3 is completely useless without the expansion and the VATS system was a stupid idea. That Zelda is boring, Final Fantasy has no gameplay, Gears Of War has only ONE decent weapon: I'll never utter a peep in protest.

However there is one game I will fight tooth and nail to defend against any criticism, even the fair criticism is obviously deserves. That game is...

The best game ever conceived by man

Perfect Dark. If it weren't for the Slow-Mo Challenges and the low frame rates when things got busy that title would be absolute truth. Hoverbike>Warthog.

Final Fantasy X. Harsh on the last great incarnation of this franchise and I will MAKE TIME to shoot holes in your argument.

For my old school gamer side I'd have to say Blood and Blood 2: The Chosen are sacred to me. While others may pour over Duke Nukem 3D and Doom (though with good reason), to me the Blood series was the best FPS experience ever made with its combination of unique weapons, dark humour, creepy gothic horror settings and steeped in pop culture and horror movie references. all topped off with gaming worlds greatest gravel voiced, wisecracking undead anti-hero, Caleb.

As for the current generation of video games, I don't have any serious obsessions with any particular games series and Yahtzee already has the silent hill 2 pedestal kept nice and shiny. That in mind I do feel I have to leap to the defence of the Dead Rising series regularly, as it seems to be the marmite of 3rd generation games. I see it as a breath of fresh air, there are no other games of its ilk and i can see why that puts a lot of people off given that games are getting more and more generic (lately it seems as though the market is over flooded with what essentially boil down to slightly modified versions of either COD, Halo or GTA IV) and more about "immersive story lines" and "stunning vistas that make you want to stop playing and take in the scenery" than good old fun and challenging gameplay which Dead Rising 1 and 2 has in spades.

The point being missed by a lot of todays big name developers is that in games immersive story lines, stunning vistas and fluid intuitive controls should be secondary or even tertiary goals. As long you make a fun and challenging game, most players will WANT to become immersed in what they're playing and therefore will be already. Dead Rising may have clunky controls cheesy dialogue and a ridiculous storyline but seeing as it's supposed to be a parody of the survival horror genre to begin with, maybe that's the whole point? Just look at Red Dead Redemption: yes it was a beautifully realised vision of the old west with a poignant story worthy of any hollywood movie but there was virtually nothing else to it and the only challenging part of the game came from fighting a cougar using only a knife and playing poker and they were bloody SIDE MISSIONS!!!

I don't know that I haaaave to defend any particular game. I'm of a mind that opinions are, as my stepdad insisted, like assholes. Everybody has one, and they all stink. I simultaneously think it's just fine that you don't like what I like as that is your right and is also totally normal, and also think you're an idiot for not getting what is so great about what I like. Which again, I am fine with.

However, I do have games that are sacred to me, even if I don't care what you think about them. Those would be the first three Silent Hill games.

Despite having gamed since 1976, and having fond memories of everything from Pong to Donkey Kong, to Myst, to Diablo, to Burnout Paradise, I think only the Silent Hill games could approach anything like sacrament to me. You gotta be really good and really engaging to scare a horror freak like myself, and those games did. That puts them close to my heart.

Tabletop RPGs are easier for me to think of as sacred, since the gameworlds require I invest so much more of my own creativity in them.

There are ALOT of games I love, but only few, you dont really hear alot about when talking about good games.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Ghost Recon

Ghost Recon: Island Thunder

Hitman (Whole series)

If you dare to say something negative about these darlings, I will probably kill you. :p

Seriosly. Even thou Im mostly a retro-gamer, These are the best games I've played, that you dont hear alot about. I absolutelly love them. The best Xbox and PC-gaming of my life was spent with these games. 2 of the best single player games I know, and 2 of the best Co-Op games I know. That's fucking awesome.

Just about any Nippon Ichi Software game, in case you couldn't tell from my avatar- but this also includes the old ones that no one's played in like 10 years, if ever: Disgaeas 1-3, La Pucelle: Tactics, Makai Kingdom- the list goes on.

Riviera: The Promised Land and Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone, and maybe Knights In the Nightmare if I ever get around to playing it

Oh, and of course-

Final Fantasy VI.

It started my love affair with the Final Fantasy series as well as being, in my opinion, the best game out of them all.
DAMN! ninja'd by the first reply T_T

Edit- So far Record of Agarest War is on it's way to this list, if not for the literally HUNDREDS of repetetive and quite easy battles just to make a single 2-minute event happen- guns and swords don't kill, tedium does.

Nothing has ever matched the intensity of playing that game as part of an organized team.

LOL BORING PLANET SCANNING AND LOL BORING COMBAT AND LOL NO REAL DECIS-

*gets cut off by sane person*

Uh, yeah. Mass Effect 2 is win, I agree. Has its small flaws, but even the most near-perfect games in the world (i.e Homeworld) have flaws.

I do get really annoyed at those who make the idiotic complaints I parodied above.
