Pretty much every MMO that has come out in the last 5 years. The only one I think I have played past the free 30 days was Swtor, and I have since stopped playing it.

I rented Shadowrun once, expecting a cool story mode about how magic was possible in a modern day society and how it would effect the world around them.
Got an exposition dump about how a volcano erupted and then a multiplayer mode where bots couldn't be activated if there was another player playing with you.
Learned later that the shitty game was actually made off of an old top-down roleplaying game that was supposedly much better. Made me rage.

Lol, yeah, my missus bought that for me, once. It's the only game in my collection that has dust gathering on it. I normally like any shooter, but that was.....
Fucking.
Shit.

She asks me which upcoming titles I might be interested in now, thank God.
The cross-platform X-box/PC idea was a good one too. WRONG game to try it with though. Ugh.

(pardon my French)

I too was stung by Brutal Legend. I thought it would be an awesome hack and slash action game set to the best soundtrack in any game ever with scenery to match, with even a little driving and car customisation thrown in. I'm even a moderate fan of Jack Black. It should have been the perfect game for me. But oh how I was wrong.

The demo gave the impression of the game I was expecting it to be, but once you got past that stage in the actual game things pretty much go to shit. Turned in to a crappy repetitive game full of shallow unenjoyable mechanics sprinkled over a shitty RTS game. I really don't like RTS games. I don't necessarily have anything against them but I felt so cheated thinking that I was lied to about the entire genre of the game! If I knew that's what the game was about then it would be fine, I simply wouldn't have bought it. But they lied. Which ended up in me wasting £40. At least the soundtrack was still good.
Personally I enjoyed Brutal Legend, the RTS sections were a surprise and I had a lot of fun with the multiplayer when I could actually get a game, but I can see why people were annoyed about it, the demo did nothing to demonstrate that the RTS elements were going to be there, and totally threw the impression of what the game was about.

If Double Fine had just shown that it was going to be that, people would've gone in knowing what to expect and not felt burned or mis-lead.

Dead Island doesn't really count for me because it's a non-gameplay trailer that generated all the hype. Once you saw the gameplay you instantly knew it wasn't worth it.

Witcher 2 I just can't get into, not the story, love the story. But the combat mechanics are so clunky for my liking that they kill the flow of the game.
Did you try Witcher 2 once they bought out the patch? I played it a couple of months ago after they added all the new features/tided up the game, and I didn't feel it was too bad, some elements are a little clunky, but apparently it's a massive step up from what it was like at release. They pretty much overhauled the fighting mechanics.

nope. sorry.

it will never beat this

not even close.
Watching the trailer still makes me want the game that was hyped, a true emotional zombie survival game, but then I remember the mess I spent $60 on :(

The Force Unleashed 2. Yeah, that game. 60dollars for 6 hours of bad storyline and boring gameplay. I'm having a derection right now because you made me think of it.
How in the world did you manage to stretch it out that long?
I was thinking the same thing. I think I finished it in 4 hours.

If I finished a full price game in 4hrs I would take it back for a refund.

GTA3 fooled me because of my own ignorance, when I played GTA I just though damn this would be awesome in 3D so when it came out I was so hyped for it got back played it and huge disappointment ensued I think they forgot to put in the fun although judging by the reviews I think it was just left out of my version.
Thats strange, GTA3 was every bit as cool as I expected it to be. I even bought a new graphics card to play it. I remember a few years earlier I imagined how cool it would be if GTA was 3D, but that would never happen because a 3D open world just wouldn't be possible...

For me DA2 is the obvious candidate but thats a boring subject.

Pretty much everything labelled X-Com that has been released after Terror From the Deep. Every game that had a Master of Magic vibe to it, Age of Wonders and Warlock I'm looking sternly at you!

But besides DA2 I think the biggest disappointment has to be Bioshock. I loved System Shock 2, and after hearing so much praise about Bioshock I had to try it. I still can't figure out what all the fuss was about. It's just a normal mediocre shooter with linear levels and some admittedly very interesting aesthetics.

GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, biggest mistake I've ever made.
Skyrim is another, I did pour a lot of time into it but I can't say I had fun.

like a lot brink BUT, I still like the game, I just got a different game from what is advertised.

what was advertised: a fast paced, highly customizable fps with a great freedom of movement.

what I got: a slow paced fps where majority of tactic comes into load out and how you approach the objective, with some freedom of movement (limited more by the level design then movement system).

A lot of people got dead island because they saw the great trailer, I was interested in dead island at least a year before that trailer when it was a very different concept of a survival horror game with breakable and craftable weapons, a focus on realistic enemy damage and making zombies scary again. Though yet again the final product was something good but very different from its original design, but you can see glimmers of the original dead island idea under the final product.

I liked Dead Island.

Just sayin...
I like it too.

Advertising exists to sell products, not to inform consumers. If you're hyping yourself up over any game into thinking it'll have features or be something you havn't seen explicitly stated, then you're only fooling yourself.

What fooled me was MW2. I preordered it for the pc as soon as it was available and didn't give it another thought till release day when I took it home to find that it: was not "balanced for leaning," had matchmaking instead of servers, had no console.
In retrospect, I should have payed attention to development but it never occured to me they would release a sequel which was a step backward in many areas.

Dragon Age 2 for me. I loved the first. I mean, I loved it.
I decided to give Bioware the benefit of the doubt on DA2. What a mistake.
