Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (too easy, stupid story)
Disgaea 2 (for some reason it just wasn't as good as the first one)
Toe Jam and Earl 3 (they just ruined the series)
Armored Core 4 (What is this silly NeXt thing?)

The Darkness: It could have been brilliant but it was just an average FPS with dodgy aiming, an unbearably laggy online mode and an inconsistent difficulty level.

Assassin's Creed: It had so many good ideas and was massively hiped. It still turned out a good game but it should have been much better.

XIII: It had a lot of potential and the cel shading and overall comic book style was well done but it turned out to be a pretty average FPS.

Haze: Free Radical is usually a great developer. What happened?

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, all they needed to do was work on the party AI (anyones who's played it will know what I'm talking about).
Herdy Gerdy.
Probably more I can't think of off the top of my head...

I thought Ratchet & Clank 2 was great 0.o my favourite one.

Also... Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi... it was 3d for Christ's sake, how did it end up worse than the old tekken-style games!?

Can't disagree with anyone's choices so far...

IMHO the Heroes of Might and Magic series started to go stale around 3, the others were decent but there was just too much choice, too many sides, that it detracted from what made the first 2 so perfect. Also, 3's level editor was more prone to crashing than Vista on a Mac.

Master of Orion 3... How could someone take a game like MOO2 and actually fuck up a sequel? For that matter, same happened to Star Control 3, Twisted Metal 3, ResEvil 3... Sweet zombie Jesus, the number 3 and gaming just doesn't mix.
1st person I've heard say that about Heroes 3. Usually hear its the best of the Heroes series.

Mass Effect, definitely. It actually is good so long as you don't think of it as a game, but rather an interactive story where the interactive parts suck.

The only part I liked about Mass Effect was when I got to kill my own party members through dialog. It should have been more of that and less retarded ally AI.

Metroid Prime 2 - falls way short of the origional
Fable - Over hyped; turned out to be a decent RPG and nothing more

I actually loved XIII, the plot end kinda pissed me off though. I wanted to keep playing.

For me...

The Def Jam game for the 360 sucked. I had hoped it would carry over from Fight For NY, but no... no they screwed up what was perfect about that game.

The Kingdom Hearts series as whole is very dissapointing. I appreciate the action RPG, but it could have be done far better, as could have the story.

Dead Rising could have been much better, easily if they'd replaced the reporting and what not on actual survival, did away with the psychopaths, and made the zombies more powerful. Keep the rescue missions, those were cool, but zombies are enough. We don't need bugs popping out of peoples heads and cult members suicide bombing me within the confines of that. Nor do I need constantly respawning Humvee driving convicts... what was up with that? I shoot a dude with a shot gun point blank and he's fine after I go back inside?! God... I still like the game though. Just on Infinity Mode.

The NBA Street 3. 2 is and always will be the best.

I was going to put another but I forgot.

Yeah Heroes 3 was the best imo.

Far Cry Evolution should have been good. I dunno i guess it just felt...rushed?

Soul Calibur 4. Though honestly, its not so much that the game itself is bad or anything, I mean its still Soul Calibur. It just seems like the whole thing is thrown together as nothing but a shallow frontend for the on-line component. Everything about it just feels scaled-back and "smaller" than it did in SC3. Only thing worse than a game outright sucking is when a sequel takes a huge step backwards from its predecessor. Seriously, I would rather have a carbon copy with a new coat of paint than some half-ass piece of junk with a fraction of the content. :/

is it just me or did the wonky camera behind your character (and driving) hurt your eyes after an hour of gameplay...

Super paper mario

When I heard the game had it's RPG thing removed I was devastated man.
I mean the attractive of the hole paper mario series was the RPG thing.
The only thing they kept from it was the insanely large quantity of lines and lines of text. If I'm not playing an RPG I don't want you to bombard me with a complex story in a platformer.

Tell me about it! Fight for NYC is close to my favorite fighting game of the last generation. DJ Icon was the antithesis of that.
