I'm making this post after playing a game a friend gave to me which seemed to be a normal tactical shooter he insisted it was a awesome game SWAT4, i gotta say going into it i was thinking oh yeah this is good and the first level was standard arrest these guys and secure the guns.

come the second mission you had to apprehend a serial killer after its believed he has a girl kept in his house, the briefing doesnt bode well for the mission as it describes in detail what he does to the girls he takes, on to the mission i decided to take the stealthy route and go through the garage the garage sets is a indication that the rest of this mission isnt going to be too pleasant for you, glass cages filled with dead rats were piled high in this room, i go through a door and break into his bedroom which is plastered with newspapers stating his killings and pictures of the ones he killed and to quote the black guy in the squad "holy shit man ive got a bad feeling about this", you then go into the room adjoined where there are more newspaper clipping s on the walls and theres mannequins and papier mache masks hanging from the cieling, and on a filthy bed is a woman restrained wearing what seems to be a porcelaine mask though it isnt the one your looking for, you then have to carry on into what seems like a makeshift tunnel into a iron box underground, as soon as you go through into the iron room you see the killer holding a shotgun to the head of the crying woman whos covered in blood and filth, i didnt kill the serial killer though i was doing shit by the books.

The only thing that made this worse was the fact his mother who was upstairs when the killings had happened kept repeating hes a good boy hed never hurt a fly. that mission scared me more than any horror game has in the last few years, probably cos murderers are real and monsters arent and that scenario has probably happened somewhere.

So what games that werent supposed to be scary scared the beslubber out of you.

I'm not sure if Thief was meant to be scary or not, but the zombie levels (bonehoard, cathedral, etc) certainly ended up feeling like it.

I have a feeling it WAS meant to be scary, just not certain.

Usually it is creepy music that frightens me. I can't think of any other time I've been unintentionally scared. Chainsaw man from RE5 freaked me out because of immersion. Every time I would go upstairs to get food I thought he was chasing me.

I get really scared when travelling through Oblivion's caves, mines and forts. The first time Lucien Lachance from the Dark Brotherhood scared the crap out of me, too. I was too busy wondering why my character was waking up after only an hour's sleep, when the camera suddenly zoomed in on him, and I actually yelled.

Everybody gets scared by that, especially if you didnt even notice the your killings have been observed message.

I actually have to say the SWAT 4 one with you. It was just plain eerie.

It was worse for me the first time I played it since when I was going down into the tunnel I was shot and immediately killed, it made me jump since I was caught by surprise.

You might want to get out a gun, a BIG gun there... taking on a deathclaw with your bare hands might make a good story, when you tell it to the angels (or demons) after you are torn apart.

I also agree, that Vault was pretty creepy. So was when I rounded a corner and saw a Mirelurk King, after fighting off hordes of Mirelurks and Mirelurk Warriors.

Oblivion

Because of those damn Imperial Guards. Once I was just walking through the wilderness, guardsmen randomly came up behind me and yelled "STOP! YOU'VE VIOLATED THE LAW!!!"

Not even sure what I did. Considering the bounty was 5 gold, it couldn't have been much.

i use the dart gun on them, I just used that screenshot via google. The only closer shot shows a deathclaw with that mind control device on.

I hated the one that was on my side, I dont like being followed by a deathclaw, EVER. Even a friendly one.

This, definitely. I didn't even step foot into the shadow temple for half a year (I was procrastinating with the chain quest and stuff) because it scared the shit out of me. Easily my least favorite dungeon :p

whenever i play the game sneakily, it is quite chilling.
of course then i found the way to make weapons that kill anything and that kinda took away from the scariness...

Tomb Raider. They always felt so incredibly lonely. Same goes for those Army Men games.

I know Resident Evil games are supposed to be scary, but RE4 was more like an action movie, with its third person approach and pure unambiguous danger. That's why, by way of the rules of emotional suspense (you keep expecting it to switch to the old horror style and so when it does you expect something seriously evil), the scene when you first hear the Regenerator crawled all the way up my spine and tingled every segment. Seeing the thing stumble into camera didn't help me, but it's the great Unknown that truly scares people, even in games. Now that I know what's coming and have a Chicago Typewriter, Handcannon and Infinite Launcher, I'm sort of blasé about the things.

I was 10, and he scared me too. Now, however, I can take him out in one combo. Kinda takes the edge off.
