Recently, I've been going back and replaying some games. Some I liked. Some I didn't like. Since I'm at it now, I figured it might be worth my while to give games I had a bad initial reaction to a second chance to impress me, since I might be more likely to get into them now that I know what to expect from them. These are games that I felt like I'd been really unfair on; that I hadn't given them a fair chance. These are all games I stopped playing because I wasn't finding them any fun, and I just plain couldn't get interested in them, yet I figure there still might be something there to impress me.
Currently, my games on the "deserve a second chance" list are:
Fallout NV. I loved Fallout 3 so I'm not sure why I didn't have a good first impression of it. I know there's a game I'll love in there somewhere, but I think I just got that sandbox problem of running around because NPCs are telling you this is where the story is instead of going off to find quirky places on my own. Bugginess may also have been an issue, since I had quests that didn't work right, and other stiff
FFXIII. Let me say this; I didn't hate FFXIII. I didn't have that strong of a reaction to it. The most I could say about it was that it was okay, mostly because I think I was so confused by it that I didn't get it. I didn't get why the mechanics had changed so much from previous games, or why it was stopping constantly for cinematics. I didn't get what was going on, since it seemed like the constant flashes to the backstory were impossible to follow, so I had no connection to the game or story. However, by the time I stopped playing, I could see that it was starting to get better. I don't see the harm in at least trying to see this game through fresh eyes, since it will probably be less jarring now that I know what to expect.
Halo: Reach. I have never played a Halo game before, so I think that's mainly why I struggled to get into it. I'm not familiar with the backstory, beyond the obvious basics that Covenant = evil aliens trying to wipe out humanity. I'm not a huge FPS gamer, so it usually takes a bit to get me involved, but I figure I'll probably love it once I give it a second chance and start getting to the interesting parts of the game.
So, anyway, those are my three games that I feel deserve a second look from me. Are there any games you think you'd be willing to try again? Or, can you think of a game that you once hated, only for it to become a game you loved once you tried it again?
