Fallout 2.
I guess I didn't really have to start over but I was about two thirds finished when I realised I didn't like my character.
Although I did have to start over on Fallout 3. The first time was because my friend saved over my save, and the second was because of the Trophy patch.

This happened to me when I was playing Assassin's Creed. My game file got corrupted just before I was going to go after the final boss. Swearing ensued.

I think the most recent was STALKER Clear Sky. I didn't read the update news clearly, so I missed the warning that my save files would become useless.

a combination of idiocy and n00bs means i have to start saints row 2 again if i want achievements.

I'd going thru xbox guide, just backed out and hit back button out of habbit to start game from pause, unfortunatly, a player had tried to coop play, thus making me join the coop (back button joins coop) and because he had cheats enabled my game saved, "cheat enabled". but with no cheats on the phone menu.
11% completed, a good few hours wasted.
:(

BG2, I chose the wrong path in the Paladin fellows backstory quest and had to kill him.

Oblivion, my character was just stupid.

Pokemon, 200 hours gone just because my sister lent it to her friend who wasn't in tune with the workings of the "save" option.
Ouch, I really feel your pain =/

Same thing happened to me a few years back.

Except I lost the game entirely. Don't ask how but it ended up in my toilet. Thus ending my time-killing Pokemon frenzies

It was a tragic experience.

After I managed San Andreas 100%, I always liked getting the Harrier at Grove St. Unfourtunatly when I decided I needed to Reformat my PS3's HDD, I saved all my saves onto a flash card... except to PS2 internal Memory Cards. Lost it all and tried again. I only managed to get to Angel Pine and gave up.

I had to replay Morrowind about 6 times because in all cases either a) my character sucked or b) I accidentally turned off my console before it was done saving (thus corrupting the file).
same game but different reason for me I had the pc one and every time I downloded bloodmoon it said it could not load snowflake exe when I tried to play it

ALL FF games up to 12 (which warned you) FF was great at destroying saves. You would get to an incredibly strong boss, have no way of going back, and basically you were stuck because your characters were never strong enough.....
FF7 was great at doing this it let you get all the way to the end before doing this....bah!

FF12 was good it gave you notification that your about to enter an incredibly difficult area please save before entering.
the only time i've ever got really stuck was in the Templ of Ancients in FF7, between the Red Dragon and the Demon Wall. god i hate Demon Walls.

i also actually watched my brother reformat my PS1 memory card. i don't remember what was on there but it was full and it definitely had my first FFT save on it.

more recently he saved over my game in no more heroes, but that wasn't as big a deal since it was a new game+ and he had plenty of cash.

Any game that you can make a character accidentally suck on your first time through and you get stuck.

Most RPGs do this. Diablo II was killer for me, and I even got stuck a few times in FFT.

super Metroid, I was like 10 and didn't have the reflexs to properly do a walljump, so I got stuck in that pit and couldn't get out. Ended up restarting.

Another example is the select cheat in vintage copies of link's awakening. You could jump around the map, but if you decided to forgo the trade sidequest and try and enter the room, you got stuck trying to leave and had to restart.

NBA Street V3. My memory card got corrupted.
Let me tell you, nothing is more irritating than having the most ultimate character, the best assembled team since the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, having all of the characters unlocked, then getting kicked in the nuts with a pair of size 15 cleats and having to restart the 30+ hour trek back through the Hell of replaying something with damn near no replay value.

Well, I was just having fun on Last Remnant after finally beating the Gates of Hell, then I look at my quests, I missed one, so now I have to start all over again, which has pissed me off greatly.

Has this ever happened to you?
One quest? Which one, because some of them carry over onto disc two. I missed a bunch because you can only do certain quests if you have certain leaders hired from guilds (Caedmon, the Sovani leader of the Silver Falcons, for example). I beat the game, and had to start over. And there is one quest that is truly evil on how you get it (Disc 2). If you want to know, message me.

Anyway, well, "The Last Remnant," for one, "Infinite Undiscovery," because I missed alot, and, well, mostly RPG's I end up having to play through 2-3 times.

Fable 2: at first, I chose the option of the money after beating the main story, and was greatly pissed when I realized I still needed the dog for some quests. very lame.

I was 88% through Far Cry 2 when the game froze during a loading screen, corrupting the save file. I beat it on a harder difficulty.
