I miss the day when it was standard to make a game that stood out from the rest. But as much as I miss these games, I would not want the "Hollywood" attitude of today's game industry to fuck up these old franchises with their "streamlining" and "modernization."
RIP Franchises that got me hooked on gaming to begin with...
Homeworld -- True 3D real time strategy in a awesome SciFi setting. Dead for the foreseeable future.
Poplulous/Black and White -- God games will probably never come back(WTF Peter Moleneux).
Sim City -- It's not The Sims. Therefor, Maxis will not acknowledge its existence.
Half Life -- We will only see the finale of the story if Valve gets desperate for cash down the road(Not likely). :'(
TBH I admit that I am a little more biased towards strategy games. I never really got into shooters(FPS or otherwise) and RPG's that much(not because I think they are inferior, they just aren't usually my cup of tea).
It is sad because innovation, entertainment, and most importantly FUN are no longer the main reasons for developing games. It is all about home much money you can milk from your fanbase. Hell publishers even actively discourage creating a "classic" anymore because they want to sell a sequel every year.
You may not recognize it friends, but the idea of "gaming" that most of us fell in love with, is being picked apart by uncaring vultures who could care less about the quality their final product because their high score is the number of dollar bills they see in their bank account. Not because they love the work that they do, not because they want to entertain people, not because they want to push the boundaries of what games are capable of doing, and certainly not because they themselves love games.
In a nutshell...
Most publishers these days are a bunch of dicks.
Note to Valve: Listen, your treatment of the HL series is irritating but you have not yet become an evil empire(yet). Please refrain from doing so or I may just give up on games altogether.
