First Person Shooters: A Dying Genre?
The Industry's Thoughts on a Narrowing Market
By Jeff Gerstmann

July 29, 2008 - It's coming up on a full year since Halo 3 was released to mediocre reviews and disappointing sales, and people are asking themselves: does the First Person Shooter die with its last champion? It certainly seems so. With the proliferation of Point-and-Click Adventures in the late 90's, and with a vast variety of Platformers and Art Games clogging up the shelves, the market share for FPS games has been pushed more and more to the wayside. How can these increasingly rare niche games, such as the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever, compete? "It's not always about the storyline," says Cevat Yerli, president of indie game studio Crytek. "Sometimes it's about the graphics. The player who wants to stop thinking, just let himself into visceral feeling of combat: that's the kind of player we cater to."

"That kind of player is a vanishing breed," he adds.

First Person Shooters seem to be fighting a battle on all fronts just to survive. Roger Ebert, film critic and outspoken supporter of Art Games, has clashed numerous times with FPS advocate and iconoclast Jack Tho

Well this had me chuckling a lot. A very good parody indeed sir. Just a question, where is the artwork of the dwarf from?

"Smack Buds: Battle" Cameo to 'One-Up' the Mario Franchise?
In a startling turn of events, black sheep game developer Nintendo has announced that it's flagship character, Super Mario, will be making an appearance in "Suped Up Smack Buddies: Battle", the Sega Centauri sequel to 2004's smash hit. Most older gamers remember Mario as a top contender in the 1990's console wars. When Sega came out on top with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, however, the quality of Mario games started to drop off, until it was considered one of the worst wastes of potential in gaming history.
Rumor has it that Mario's appearance in "Battle"" will open up possibilities for developers looking to take the rotting Mario franchise in a new, hopefully fun direction.

Ion Storm has closed its doors. Despite the excellence of its first person shooter game Daikatana, the heinously broken Deus Ex failed to sell well, making the years spent on its creation worthless. The poor sales of Deus Ex wer exacerbated by the infamous "Warren Spector's about to make you his *****." advertisements, which alienated and irritated gamers.

Metacritic PC game score charts: Highest score: Big rigs: Over the road racing with a 98. The lowest? Half Life 2 with a score of 2.

Planescape Torment sells millions, despite universally bad reviews.

Gamers complain at lack of "E" games on nintendo wii: "It seems like every game on the wii involves visceral combat, extreme sexuality, and drug abuse." says one upset gamer, "what happened to Nintendo's commitment to the more casual crowd?"

Lucasarts releases mainly adventure games in 2009. Many are worried that the Star Wars IP is not being used as much as it can. "Stop milking the Maniac Mansion franchise!" say fans.
