That's a reasonable thought, but on the flip-side what ISN'T a waste of time?

I believe that I live life so I can have fun, and games are fun to me, does that not discount them as a waste of time?

Of course it isn't productive. It's a past-time, meant to whittle away the free hours to bring us closer to death. That's what past-times are for.

Having read over the tale you've related and weighed it against not only the re-tellings of similar experiences by others, but also against my own experiences, I was reasonably entertained, however when compared against storytellers on the whole, even solely located within this venue, if we take into account not only the situation you have related but any situation at all, comparing the method of the stories told without regard to the content therein, your story, while still entertaining, produces no lasting emotional investment in the reader, though you should not take this as discouragement and should, instead, consider it a friendly commentary from a fraternal colleague.

In other words: Cool Story Bro.

Chances are if you go to college you are forced to take a foreign language no matter what your major is, where I am you are forced to take four semesters of Spanish. I live in America and I'm forced to spend money (classes and books aren't cheap, either) to learn a foreign language even if I want to get an English degree. Doesn't that seem like a waste of time?

I can see what you mean, but Games= Fun= Happiness= Waste of time? I guess it could go both ways depending on how you think about it.

God damn it.

If you're going to get all existential then EVERYTHING is a waste of time. Have some goddamn fun.
Exactly, is learning to play an instrument really so much more productive than playing video games? Either way you're just doing something you enjoy and getting better at it and most likely you wont make a career out of playing either. Video games are just as much a 'waste of time' as anything else people do that involves them enjoying themselves.

sex can also be a waste of time (unless you want kids).
That right there is a sentance you do not want to read wrong. I just got in from an eight hour work shift fuelled solely by caffeine and I muddled a few words around. Not going to tell you which words, but trust me, my brain put them in the wrongest order possible. And added a few.

That being said. I once had a friend moan about how 'video games are just a waste of time, all you do is sit there.' This friend? She was a film student. As in a scholar of moving images researching an activity that people enjoy while sitting down and not moving very much. I was quick to point this out.

Two years down the line and she's now a gamer like the rest of us, even deeper into the hobby than I am and I'm quite the geek.

I'm not sure who's side that anecdote argues for, but it seemed relevant is all. I don't say very much on these forums is all.

Yeah, gaming is a complete waste of time. So is reading books, watching TV, seeing movies, playing non-video games such as board games, going on the internet to random gaming sites to say that gaming is a waste of time, and a ton of other things.

"time wasted enjoying yourself is not time wasted" I can't remember who said this but i stand by it. Also the point that you don't get anything form it is totally wrong you get improved reflexes, hand eye coordination and for some people it helps them handle problems in there life like any other form of escapism.

Well, of course it is. So is reading books (some are excepted from that though) or watching movies. Or doing just about anything else unproductive and fun in your free time.

And if practicing your instruments seems like a chore to you, then you're not enjoying music and should therefore reconsider. Learning an instrument should not be because you want others to know and hear you, but because you enjoy it.

I agree. What bothers me though are people who think video games are a waste of time but don't say the same for watching TV or films.

Apparently it's anti-social to sit there playing a video game while simultaneously speaking to one of your real life friends over a microphone, whereas sitting in silence in a room full of people watching a television screen is perfectly okay.

To simplify it. Everything is a waste of time.

Hell, working for money is just keeping you alive longer so you can waste more time.

I do not agree with this. I learned a great deal of words, facts, phrases, and events in history from various games that I would have never learned or never cared to learn in school. I became such a good reader simply because of the amount of JRPG's I plyaed growing up.

You know what's also a waste of time? Living. Seriously, how does life help you when your dead (religious beliefs excluded)? You can classify almost anything as a waste of time some how. Video games are just a fun waste that don't require too much effort.
