Mirror's Edge for me. The trailers looked so amazing, the kind of game that I had been looking forward to for so long...and then it just blew. I've never been as excited as I was for that game, and I was so crushed when it turned out to be bad that I've become jaded and bitter, not able to enjoy any of the games that I used to have fun with. It's gotten better, but, still, it was like getting cheated on all over again.
Now now, that seems harsh. I agree with the initial sentiment of your post, though. Mirror's Edge did promise more than it delivered, and it ended up being on the disappointing end of the scale. With that said, there are good things about the game. It's just... well, pretty flawed.
You might be right, maybe my expectations were monumental and the game couldn't hope to measure up to them, but it still was what I felt to be the biggest disappointment in the gaming world. It might not have been that bad, but compared to what I expected it to be, it was like...say you're a southern, extremely christian man, and your good, god-fearing son went off to college and you found him four years later as a gay, homeless, heroin-addicted drag queen.

Peter Molyneux and all his promises that never came around. He's a good guy but he can never keep his mouth shut.
Fable 2 was the reason I bought an Xbox 360. I don't think i've ever had less fun in a game's co-op.

Killzone

I remember when that was coming out every magazine would not shut up about it, i seem to remember one magazine gave it two 14 page spreads in the space of threee months. When it finally came out the graphics were unimpressive the gameplay was slow and the weapons were hideously unsatisfying, majorly let down on that one.

Fable in my most humble opinion. As much as I enjoyed the game, the replay value and content didn't live up to the endless list of promises. But hey, who watches the Molyneux?

Battlefield Bad Company 2's story. I was hoping for the same unrealistic hilarity of the first, yet still maintaining an epic war game feel, but no, they thought MW2 was a good idea to copy from, and nothing was really wrong with MW2 In my opinion, just trying to use it in Bad Company? No. So many things just let it down. 1)MW1-2's story IMO only works for those 2 games, it's the style of storytelling. 2) The characters in BFBC were built up to be almost a parody of the stereotypical average action hero like Soap/Ramirez. 3) They could've at LEAST not copied MW2's locales. Favela missions were memorable; when do you get to do Special Forces shit in a Brazilian shanty town? Then Bad Company did a coupla guys killing dudes in Bolivia.... ugh. And then the whole "Oh noez the enemeis r attkcin us at r houme countreez we must defned it nao!" Again, MW2 did it well, but Bad Company's was just baad.
Now, I LOVE Bad Company, both games, multiplayer is flawless in both, first one's campaign is made of win, but they just did a poor campaign rip off of MW2 in the second one, GIANT let down.
Flame me all you want for liking MW2, Campaign was actually very good I thought.

The vanilla ending for Fallout 3. Thank god for Broken Steel, because that ending, quite honestly, ruined the game for me. What's the point of playing through for...that?
Yeah the Cliche you have to die for the world crap gets old...

Some of the programmers need to grow up and just think about the people who want to keep wandering the wastes and think of a real creative good ending.
I just got Fawkes to do it

I hope I don't get flamed for this:

Modern Warfare 2
EDIT: Fable 2's co-op.
I know I'll get flamed for this but, in my opinion, it's the truth: Mass Effect was a Massive Fail. I should explain. I don't like exploring a large area for q or 2 resources, I don't like that crappy AI in my squadmates, that inventory system, um...I just didn't like it. I tried to fight on for "the epic story" but just couldn't.

Hellgate London.

I actually had a lot of fun with it but it didn't live up to expectations. I was sort of expecting the next diablo and got something pretty unfinished. In hindsight I imagine the game coming out with a "Bill Roper's gonna make you his *****" add campaign.

ah well at least I didn't subscribe =)

Mine would be Star Trek Online. Full of broken promises and a total let down.

The devs were even on the forum bitching they would stop communicating with the people on the forums if they took everything they said in future as gospel, forgive us the humble paymasters for commenting on the missing features that the devs were saying "would" be ingame in the videos they released before launch.

Total letdown.

"Mercanaries 2 will kick ass!"

Er, right. That's when it works properly, and when the AI has an intelligence slightly higher than that of a retarded goldfish.
This all stuck out even more, given that its predecessor was excellent.

Fable games with all of Monlyneux's stupid promises and as well as the promises that never came to life the promised co-op (which actually arrived) is terrible. They could at least have let you use your own character when you played together online.

Fable 2.

I rather enjoyed Fable 1. It wasn't fantastic, but it did have a certain charm.

Fable 2 was a huge steaming pile of poodle doo.

Not an actual gameplay disappointment , but the biggest letdown for me is that Shenmue 3 will probably never be made :(

Have to agree with you there. Promises the Earth and what do we get?

Both Fable and Fable 2 were mediocore RPGs at best and always had something off about them which reall made them unapealing to me. Perhaps its the bad British accents, the odd and gharish art stlye or the general disjointed medievil-magic-BMovie-fantasy supidity of the universe but i've never been compelled to play one for any length of time.
I've played the second one a lot but the 'knowing' humour put me right off. The game world is stupid and having the characters remark on it doesn't fix it! It's still an issue! I was promised so much by that game but it failed to deliver consistently. The only thing I liked was the 'blades' spell, that's literally it.

Also we're English and if the accents hurt us there's a problem.

My personal disappointment was Red Alert 3. The first was a brilliant game with so many tactical options I'm convinced I could still find new ones, the second was slightly comic but still a solid tactical experience. The third was a fucking travesty! The units weren't funny, they were just absurd! There was no tactical finesse involved at all, the graphics were fuck ugly and if you had four units on screen that's all you could see! seriously, how far in did that game need to be zoomed?
I feel your pain. Red Alert is still my favorite RTS game ever made. I was actually in Pre-Beat and Beta for Red Alert 3 and that actually put me off buying the game at all.
Awww I loved Red Alert 3. Its a far cry from being the best RTS ever, but its just totally camp and brilliant :D I had a lot of fun with it - while I'll agree that RA1 was by far the best Red Alert (and is probably the best in the entire C&C series) I didn't really get into RA2 at all.

Fable. All the media-coverage about the best game ever, with choices that totally change the story.

Darksector, good ideas except that the game was way to short and not enough locations, enemies, guns.
