Just more proof that humanity sucks.

Many of you seem to throw an awful lot of flak towards the comment above, but I have to defend it for the sole purpose of understanding it a little bit differently. Poster of the comment propably meant to say that humanity as a WHOLE sucks, not that everyone sucks but if you take a broader view at everything bad that still happens in this world today in the year 2012, you might pessimistically think "Oh my god, we have gone this long and still this shit happens. We, as a whole, as humanity itself, suck because we let this shit happen even if we call ourselves civilized and socially evolved."

Now I must say that isn't the greatest thing to think about ourselves, but now that I think it, Leeloo from the Fifth Element (movie) goes depressed and angry when she finds out what humanity has done and what we still allow to be done to other people. So, come at me bro for defending a pessimistic comment about our great mankind.

Maybe we really need an outside force, like an alien attack (Watchmen), to unite us all because now we still keep on going at each others throats for the wrong reasons.

Oh crap, this went propably a bit too far and off-topic, but I'm posting it anyway. Maybe I'm wrong and the guy even meant that we all, everyone of us, sucks and are horrible beings, but at least I put gave my two cents...

I don't think I've heard of a story where a tourist was raped and forced to marry their rapist. If you live there that could happen but I seriously doubt that it could happen to a visitor like you and me.

Today in awful: a 16-year-old Moroccan girl has reportedly committed suicide after being forced to marry the man who raped her. There is absolutely nothing good about this story.

According to The Delta Herald, the young woman was raped by a man 10 years her senior last year. The family brought charges against him, and, after intervention from the girl's family, the man's family, and acquaintances of both families, a judge decided that instead of subjecting the man to any form of legal punishment, it was probably a good idea to force the two to get married, man and victim. According to Moroccan penal code, a rapist who marries his victim is exempt from legal punishment.

As a result of the crime, the girl was rejected by her father and forced to live in the home of her rapist. And last week, she ended her life by eating rat poison.

Ugh.

I find it more absurd that they consider marriage to their victim a just settlement. If he did rape her, which I'm pretty sure he did, there should be legal charges, and if he didn't, there's no way she would want to marry someone she even claimed had raped her. The judge is the biggest idiot in this whole affair, followed by the father, then the rapist.

Anyway, this story kind of depresses me, she killed herself with rat poison, so who is going to take care of the rapist now that she's dead. That was HER rapist, not somebody else's rapist, it was her responsibility to take care of him, now he's probably all sad and lonely, and there will probably be rats everywhere since she hogged all the poison.

In all seriousness, I doubt the story is actually true, or that that is the entire story. Somebody probably heard about the law,a nd decided to make a slashfic about it. The slashfic was then mis-understood by some journalist, and published this.

I understand the sentiment of your statement and I feel it. However, I believe that ignorance is what sucks, not humanity. The desire to remain attached to barbaric customs such as this is what makes me disappointed. We have lots of potential, be part of that positive movement. You seem to belong with us. Casting off the oppression of genders, the importance of absent gods and the mutilation of newborn genitalia would do our race wonders.

I don't hate religious people. Couple of my best friends are Christians and Muslims, but they are not so extreme in their thinking.
