I used to play 40K in 1990-93 and during that time I got pretty good at painting models, even if I do say so myself. Recently I took up the hobby again (painting, not playing), and while I used to paint mainly orks as that was my army, now I'm more into Marines and Guard because I like the design of the armour.
Anyways, I have noticed that there are a lot of 40K/Warhammer fans on this site so I thought I'd start a thread for people to post pics of their painted minis and swap tips on painting etc. It doesn't have to be 40K or even GW, other companies mini's are fine. If you absolutely have to you can post anime figures, as long as you painted them.
I'm getting back into practice, so I'm not as good as I was, but here are a few of my old and new mini's to start off
Some of those are wonderfull. The guardsmans face is amazing, you can almost see the "frag this" in his face. I have some wonderfull striking scorpians somewhere that i varnished and a gaunt i spent ages on. of course being a gaunt i couldnt do teh whole army like that. Also dark angels, nice choice, my personal favourite. Il post my scorpians and possible my falcon grav tank. I drew the spikes on in marker pen but it looks damn epic.
In all fairness, Tau have a fairly unique playstyle. Dark Eldar play just like normal Eldar. But darker. Necrons play similar to Marines. March forward - fire a ludicrous amount of shots, absorb a silly amount of fire, repeat. It's refreshing to have a newer playstyle introduced where it doesn't involve loading all of your guys in transports and hoping they make it across the board.
At least the Tau have a back story that doesn't involve ancient gods/chaos. They just have UN ambassadors in the form of Ethereals.
I agree with the snippet about more individual looking models...but they are already expensive enough. I don't care to fork out another 20-30 bucks per kit just for variety. That's what green-stuff is for.
I wasn't really commenting on the game, I haven't played that in years, I'm sure they have their place on the tabletop. What I meant is that for me they have no place in the setting.
Also I was persuaded to buy Citadels 'wash' pack so I'm trying out some new techniques and washes to see if I prefer them to my old way of doing things. The old Inks always dried out of dips instead of into them, which the new washes seem to have fixed, that said I'm not entirely convinced I like all the colours or the way they change the tone of the basecoat.
His face was great, but then I tried to blackline his mouth for some insane reason, don't know why, it was really good without it and I was supposed to be trying new techniques. Anyway, messed it up and had to repaint his face and now it looks shit. Balls.
I was also going to varnish him and his chums, however, I have just discovered that while 15 year old paint might work fine, 15 year old cans of spray varnish won't, and then they explode in your face when you try poking the nozzle to clear it.

I also realised I hadn't stuck the grenades on his belt after I took the photo. Now remedied.
I don't play BFG but I really like GW's spaceship designs. Partially becaus ethey are pretty quick to paint as long as yo get the technique right. Also 'cause I think they look really nice.

Taking close ups with a digicam lets you see all the little bits that you microscopicaly messed up because you can't see it properly with the naked eye...
Well if i had a cam that workde, i would show you my dreadknot, witch looks badass by how i use other peices to work it together with the paint. Also my Chaos Space Marines Terminator Lord, looks better then my dreadknot, b/c i used more of a lighting on his cape and worked with how his sholder peaces looked.
I am going to be building my own dreadknot soon, with parts to other Chaos dreadknots.
some of the bodys i like like the Night lords, and i need some DREADNOUGHT POWER CLAWS, but all the have are for NURGLE. but maby i can make it work.......
Yes, the Imperial ones are my favourite, although it's a shame they completely did away with the designs for the old Gothic Battleships and Firestorm Cruisers rather than updating them like they did with the Emporer/Tyrant/Dominator Battleships, I'd have liked to see them at BFG scale battleship size as the old Spacefleet battleships were about the size of a BFG light cruiser and the Cruiser was about the size of a BFG Frigate:

Will hopefully be posting all 3 of the unfinished models that you see here soon.
The old Eldar ships were nice too but they have updated them, Dragonship, Wraithship and Shadow hunters all look similar to the old ones. 40K still uses some Warlock models that are from the late 80's. I think the Eldar designs are some of their best. They are original, unique and striking. That is part of the reason I don't like Tau from a setting perspective, the eldar may be 'elves in space' but they look really original, Tau look like they've been cut out of a generic mecha sci fi/manga and pasted in. They are nice models and all, they'd fit beautifully into some of the other mecha wargames, but in 40K it just feels like they are in the wrong game.
The old Firestorm cruisers were some of my favorite. I've been keeping my eyes open at the local hobby-shops hoping to come across one, or someone selling their old fleets anyway.
Speaking of other models: A buddy and I are about to start up on Warhammer Fantasy again. He's taking Dwarves, I'm taking the Orcs. I think I'll be going for a lot of trolls and giants, which should be a blast to paint.

For the Firestorms I'd suggest e-bay UK. It'll cost you a bit in packaging from the US but they do crop up comparatively regularly, I imagine Space Fleet was a lot more well known over here. I've got myself 4 that way in the past couple of months. You'll probably have to pay about £10 or if your lucky and someone miss-labels it you might get it for a couple of quid like the last 2 I got .
I do collect vintage Warhammer fantasy, again not to play but just the models I like. I suppose it can be more expensive on a model for model basis vs the plastic 'whole unit' kits, but quite often you can get models for about £1 each, although the ones that are really in demand go for £5-8, about the price of the new metal ones .
Kroot warshphere...well, that's the simple task of going onto the GW website and ordering it.
EDIT:
PS My new Citadel Flying bases just got handed to me by the postman. Time to get started on my old Spacefleet Mini's
I don't have anyone here to play Gothic with, so the Warsphere is going to stay in the GW warehouse. I'll check ebay UK for some firestorms and see what turns up.
I have a big ass Lord of The Rings minature set... (made by Wahammer in case you didnt know)
Well over 200 pieces I imagine... And thats only about half of them painted. Some are pretty crap as I did some while I was really young and inexperienced. But some of the later ones are really good if I do say so myself...
I would post some pics but I dunno how... Did you all use a photosharing site or something?
That's cool. It'll be nice to see him when he's finished. I'm spoilt for choice atm. I've got lots of old vintage models I picked up on e-bay, a bunch I bought when I was a kid and 6 more New Cadians from the 10 pack of plastic ones and some BFG ships. As usual I see models I want and buy them much faster than I can paint.

It would be great to see them. I use image shack (the US one for some bizzare reason) but I think photobucket works as well. you just go to the site, upload your photos at the right size (I use 15" monitor size) and then get the forum link address and paste it into your post here. Takes a few minutes but it's not hard.

Be prepared to keep looking for a bit, they are comparatively common here but still pretty rare, and I've cleaned out most of the Spacefleet stuff, there's a couple of old dictators, annihilators, thunderbolts and galaxy troopships plus an ironclad for sale but I've nabbed the rest.

Thanks man. Every time I see people upload pics of themselves or their own things, I always wonder if they are using some straight-to-the-escapist way of uploading stuff or going through another site...
Its kinda late now and I'm off to bed... If this thread is still going tomorrow, I'll post some pics...
It's been going nearly a month, I doubt it's suddenly going to disappear overnight.

Haven't worked on these in a while. Thinking of changing the colour-schemes slightly.
*SNIP*
Also collect Salamanders for 40K and High Elves for Fantasy. Might start some Chaos soon for the conversions. If I can afford it!
Sorry, I missed your post somehow. Thats really nice work, specially on the second guy. Is that a plastic cadian with a kasrkin head? Thanks for posting.

Cadians and Kasrkin are my favourite too, they are basically 'standard issue' imperial guard, the update of the old rogue trader era guard.
The rest of them are nice models, but barring Death Korps and Steel Legion they don't feel like they fit to me. It's just a case of 'distinctive historical uniform + lasgun = new guard regiment'.
Praetorians = British colonial troops, Catachan = vietnam/Rambo era, Vallhallan = WWII soviet, Attilan = huns/, Tallarn = Lawrence of Arabia, Vostroyan = C19th/early 20th russian, Mordian...um, not sure, but the models are mostly praetorians with different heads, classic stromtroopers = British paratroopers. DKoK and Steel Legion are WWI German although they do kind of fit.
Don't get me wrong, I like the models, I've gone to great expense to get together a full squad of Praetorians, but putting them on the field with other 40K troops doesn't feel right. Taking elements of WWII russia, nazi germany etc and putting them together to make commissars was one thing, but such blatant cut and paste jobs from history don't work well IMO.
Anyway, enough complaining, here's my latest work, I haven't really finished these to a decent standard. BFG ships are easy to paint quickly but hard to spend time doing a really good job on.
EDIT: That sounds kinda obvious, doesn't it? What I mean is that because they are small but are covered in loads of little ridges and dips a quick ink then drybrush does the shading and highlight very quick and easily but then adding detail or better highlight & shade techniques is very fiddly and time consuming.
Cruiser is a bit scrappy, just like the other one I didn't really have any idea of the colourscheme before I started to paint it so I haven't really used the right techniques on it or painted bits in the right order.

I think I should give spaceships a break for a bit, I want to do a good job on my spacefleet stuff so I don't want to get bored of painting them. I've got an old fantasy black orc to do, then maybe a couple more cadians, then I'll be able to start on my space fleet stuff feeling fresh and enthusiastic.
