God of War 4 so far changed too much for the worse.

This guy pretty much sums up my thoughts on God of War 4 so far:

I mean the first God of War game was celebration of the classic Action Adventure games we have been playing since the NES, starting with Castlevania.

And even God of War 2 from a gameplay perspective expanded upon that, great level design, great and clever puzzles, combat that can get especially challegeing when playing on the higher difficulties.

But this? This is just The Last of Us, God of War edition, the same freakin 3rd Person Over The Shoulder camara that is fuckin overdone at this point. And why did you take away his Chain Blades, the very thing that made Kratos fuckin Kratos! And I don't care what story the Axe has, from a gameplay perspective its lame compared to it.

And yes I get Kratos was stupidly monsterous by the end of the 3rd game but then again that was kinda of the point, Kratos was a evil villain. As David Jaffe described him when creating the character:

"The things I said to him (Charlie Wen, Art Director) was Brutal, Nasty, Violent, Anti-Social, Pissed Off, Angry, Fuck you"

But no now we have to sit through slow walking moments of dialoge like the Gears of War Radio Calls.

Honestly the only thing, THE ONLY THING, that is keeping from just giving up on this game...is the mere fact that its Norse Mythology. Heck I am more interested in the Norse Myths they will introduce than whatever they are trying to do with Kratos and his new son that so far came out of nowhere (like who did Kratos ended up with, and I bet you 10 buck the mother died) and I just they don't dissipoint in the Bombastic Orchestral scores the franchise has so far and since this is in Norse Mythology I am expecting Skyrim's soundtrack in this game.

If anything, this is the first time that I've really had any interest in the God of War franchise.

Don't see myself getting it anytime soon (and I don't have a PS4, so it's kind of a moot point), but, yeah.

I dont much care for God of War, mostly cause I hate Kratos. Cant say much on gameplay, but I think instead of trying to redeem Kratos, he should become the antagonist of a new hero.

I really don't see the point in getting angry about this yet.

I love the God of War series, and I will acknowledge that there was some dumb shit in III, Ghost of Sparta, and Ascension. That last one was weird and had some really stupid parts in it.

But yeah, I don't get it. The demo from E3 looked fine to me, and I do have some questions since I think it's weird considering how III ended and suddenly bearded Kratos. I'm probably still gonna get it and play it and be happy.

I totally agree. I actually like the games, but I never liked Kratos as a character. This was a great opportunity to make someone any actual human being could relate to, but I guess that was too optimistic.

God of War lost the fun for me when they took out the juggling from the 1st game. L1+X was the shit!

I at least understood Kratos in the 1st game and his motive made sense. I also feel they played his kills on the innocent with just a touch of dark humor that made it work. The sequels had Kratos killing just to kill and the plot was so illogical.

Fair enough! I mean the gameplay was just kill everything and it was a lot of fun. While I didn't like the character I could easily look past him.

My main complaint in GoW 4 is like... if this is the same Kratos as after GoW 3 then he's pretty much way beyond any point of redemption or sympathy. In GoW2 and 3 he killed a *lot* of innocent people and i mean basically ended the world. Also if it's the same Kratos I guess we need to know how he's alive too.

If it's not the same Kratos, and he's being written like an entirely different or new character, why not just make a different or new character to wipe our existing association?

I will say I'm interested to see how it plays out at least.

Agreed, even back then I despised Kratos. God of War IV proves my point about how most of the industry as whole a keeps relying on the same shit over and over, and afraid of even the smallest change. If Santa Monica really wanted to impress me, they would have dropped Kratos entirely and used an actual fucking God of War from Norse mythology. There are six of them. I've said it before, and I will say it again, Odin's Sphere is a better game with Norse mythos than whatever the hell God of War IV has to offer.

Ascension I like best, because it had the absolute awesome of Level designs.

Okay, the god of war series has been basically a testosterone fueled male power fantasy with no barriers in what it wants to do. Which is ok, I enjoyed that experience also, and I identified why it pulled so many cathartic strings while playing and appreciated that unbridled glee. They didn't care about writing a relatable character, that much is obvious to us all...they cared about making badass shit happens in style. That was a fun experience undoubtedly. Why dissect a pure conduit? I believe that is a waste of valuable neuron burning. Dissect the reason why the conduit was the end result.

But you can only keep that up so much, eventually there needs to come the period of growing up, maturing, becoming self aware enough to know your strengths but not to constantly push them, because if you keep pushing the extremes, you will run out of ways to create "wow" moments pandering to literally one specific emotion. Creators grow up, writers, all these people don't want to ride on their past tropes, not ones with a sense of integrity at least. You have to understand that passionate writers will not keep writing and trying the same old shit purely because it is popular. They want to experiment and go for more nuance. It's kind of like how so many disliked Guy Ritchie's "Revolver" film because it wasn't another lock stock or snatch. He has openly said he will never do a lock stock 2 just because that's what they expect him to make. Creators grow up and want to tell deeper stories. Don't let nostalgia hold you back, dude. :)

Yeah, I agree, I couldn't care less about Kratos. I could only see playing as Kratos as a villain at best.

They really should have made god of war 4, be about hunting and killing Kratos since hes a villain, hes been one since the first game.

If there's two things that I will always praise God of War for is the combat, and the level designs.

Most of my favorite moments are boss fights in crazy levels, Poseidon's boss fight was legit.

I would have just replaced him and not mentioned the previous games or its characters. Just do a Norse mythology game without the baggage from the previous games. But I know I'm asking for too much. AAA pubs are obsessed with sequels.
If they wanted it set in the north they should have just had you play a norse hero going after him. Maybe the frost giants and such were bent to his will so that way you could still fight norse type monsters.

This looks to me like their reaction to the realization that they're not gonna be able to beat Bayonetta and games like it in that genre so they went a different way. Hopefully it manages to become something good and not just a ripoff of a different game now.

Alot of things are pretty clearly going to suck before you even try it. The real issue is if you can accept when you're wrong.
