I don't see many people playing The Longest Journey series anymore. Maybe I'm just old, but I miss games that tell an actual story, and that series is the perfect example of what can be achieved in a game when story and modern gaming technology are combined.
People seem to have forgotten about Freespace and its sequel, Freespace 2. Sigh...the best space sims ever created and nobody plays them. Happily, though, I found a community that got its hands on the source code and they've been upgrading the game to modern standards ever since. Me love Freespace Source Code Project long time.
Master of Orion II also seems to have fallen by the wayside, despite being really, massively, incredibly, popular and well-crafted. I miss my Doom Stars.
Star Trek: Elite Force and Elite Force 2 are both fun, if somewhat buggy first-person shooters based on the Quake 3 engine. It's surprising to see just how many people don't know or don't care about them, but given the state of Trek gaming after the latest putrescent turd from Bethesda (Star Trek: Legacy) I guess that's understandable.
And my all-time favorite classic...
Mechwarrior 2! I got this game when I was all of five years old. It has a place in my heart, because it's the first simulator I've ever played, and I still go back at it whenever I can. Given how old the game is, it's understandable how it dropped off the face of the Earth, but I am still weeping for the state of the Mechwarrior/Battletech franchise elsewhere.
