75% of the time when I have the option to choose male or female characters, I go with the female. It's not weird at all. Well, I suppose it could be depending on why you do it.

For me it's mostly because you don't see enough women in the games. Also, I appreciate the contrast inherent in putting a female character in a role that is typically filled by a male. For example, if my character gets into a pissing contest with an npc, the encounter feels different if my character is a female than it would if they were male. After all, imagine if in Gears of War 3 you could choose to play as female new recruit in Delta squad. Different, hey?

That's why I like female game characters and I wish more games let you use them.

i my character concept fits more to a female char, i pick a female one. In Party based RPGs i nearly never would choose a full male group too, or is it important that there is only one avatar representing your character? In some games some male versions just look idiotic. (wow draenai for example) i hate uberbulky musclechars

The easiest thing to do would to point out how easier it is to get help or money or gear when you're acting as a female....

Not as if her playing a male protagonist who's been on steroids and uses mainly masculant phrases when killing someone is any different.

To put it simply, people will do anything for hope, even if it's false hope.

Honestly, if you can play through Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64) and not make a false impression, then playing as a female character in another game shouldn't do as much damage.

It's pretty normal for people to create characters of the opposite sex, everyone I know does it and it is essential in some games that have different dialogue dependant of the sex of the character your playing if you want to see all the different scenarios.

As a rule I make my soldier classes ie heavy/plate armour sword wielders male and all my casters ie clothies female.
No reason why, i just prefer it like that.

Hey, I just did exactly that. City elf? That would be odd, huh?
Anyway, I always make a female character. I mean, always always. I dislike playing as males.
Why? Hm. I really don't know. Maybe I find it easier to connect to female characters? I certainly don't form strong attachments to my male ones.
Regardless, don't listen to her on this one: There is nothing wrong with playing as the opposing sex. Why would there be? Who is harmed? Are you likely to forget your gender now, leading you to live the sad life of one of the poor people born with such a mindset, always feeling trapped in the wrong body?
Doubt it.

I remember the booklet that came with the game pointed out you start the game by choosing a male or female character, and in parthesis it said "(we strongly encourage you to pick a character the same gender that you are)" Why they went out of their way to say this, I don't know. My only guess could be they're afraid that a kid might have a gender identity crisis after picking a character of the opposite gender. But that's not a strong argument.
Oh, god, I remember that. Even at that young age, it seemed odd. I raised my eyebrows and chose "Girl", pressing the button with a satisfying, resounding click. Take that, The Man!

I don't really ever do it... Only time I really remember making a female character was in Borderlands since I already had a level 61 Hunter and the Siren seemed a lot better than the Soldier and Brick.

Not at all. its your game, do as you wish.

I normally always go with male characters, simply because I can relate to them more. My friend always makes this notion of "If I have to watch the backside of any character... "blah blah blah
I agree with you completely, and my friends say the same thing. "You want to watch a dudes butt for about 6 hours?" Apparently I'm the only person who is looking around the character. Also if you play as a female character then you flirt with dudes... which is just awkward.

While I played a male Mage in Dragon Age, I generally do not have any preferences in terms of gender. I do not mind playing either male or female characters and my choice will vary from game to game.

Basically, I have used female characters countless of times and I do not see anything wrong with that.

I tend to make my first character a male. I like the roleplay aspect of RPGs so I model my character as an ultra-badass version of me.

Not that I'm not already a badass...

I myself always make a female char when given the option to get some variation from the standard fps-with-a-manly-man main character.

No.
And here is why.
If I have to stare at the ASS of a character for what is the play time of that game? Two weeks? Might as well be a cute female one.

Turn that argument on your buddy and ask him why he likes dwarf men and his gay midget fetish.

This about MMO's days on end playing...who's rear you looking at? A guys? A gals?

Guess a Halfling is for the creepers... and male halfing was for Michael Jackson...

Not really. I usually do that for the alternate stats and/or different dialogue. Now if you do it to stare at a pixelated ass while you play, then yes, it is.

I had recently bought Dragon Age (Yes, I know.. im a bit late to it all) and made my first character which was a Female Elf Rouge.
I was coming into this thread and immediately was going to bring up my first Dragon Age character: a Female Human Warrior.

I don't think it's weird, I just like using all the options that I have.

It's not really something I do that often, but it's also never struck me as particularly odd, especially in games where each gender has stat differences or exclusive items (which seems to be most of the ones where you can choose).

There's nothing wrong with it... But I, usually, make a male character, unless female characters get better equipment.

I only make females in ME and ME2. The voice acting is so much better.

It isn't wrong at all, in my opinion.

In most RPG's I tend to make my character look like myself, so it's easier for me to relate to my character. That said, my first Shepherd in Mass Effect 2 looks like Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and my armor looks like Iron Man. Bad-ass.
