There's nothing wrong with it... But I, usually, make a male character, unless female characters get better equipment.
That would usually depend on your personal tastes.

I think if you have an intention of investing several hours of gameplay into a game everyday, you every right to pander to your own love of the opposite gender by playing as such, if only to ensure some eye candy.

As a first off, I wouldn't say "wrong" but a bit odd. I'd do it on a second playthrough to see what it's like, which I did in ME. But, as a wise man once said:

"If I have to stare at someone's ass for about 30 hours, it might as well be a girl's."
My best friend in college had the same idea. I miss that redheaded leprechaun. Great guy.

Anyway. I find myself falling into a pattern too. I actually tend to start games as a male character, my self insertion wank character if you will. He gets to deal with all my screw ups in character creation and learning curve. On my second run, I tend to make a female character at least 80% of the time. She gets the benefit of all my hard earned second run experience and tends to be the superior character overall.

Funny since I don't do this on purpose, I just like self indulgence on a variety of levels. Oddly enough, my wife tends to be quite helpful since my female characters are her designs. I tend to be the better gamer in regards to anything with an actual test of strategy or battle. So our consensus is that she makes the sexy women she'd like to play.

*sigh as she pokes me in the shoulder* Yes, yes, she makes the majority of my male characters because she doesn't always trust my aesthetic touch with making handsome dude to pretend to be. That and she LOVES making faces on characters so I indulge her, compromise being the key to a good marriage and all that. ^_^

I don't mind but i don't know wether to think its cool or just disturbing when a female character is hitting on you. I do make my characters with different skin colours but thats like no problem i guess (and hope).

It is not something I would do.... :/

I dislike playing females and find it weird for other men to also play, because usually the female game characters resemble hookers with no self respect. Not to mention every male in the game will hit on my character which also makes me feel that the character is weak.

and as for the looking at a girl's ass argument...its a game!! not a freakin sex video! its not supposed to turn you on! All you are supposed to do is be like the Terminator and kill without emotion >:D hell yeah

So if you are a guy you play as a guy...that is my opinion at least.

There is nothing wrong with creating an opposite sex character for, say, Dragon Age, Fallout, Baldur's Gate, and other single player RPG's. In those games your main character is kind of like a window into a fantastical story full of fantastical characters, and your main character is very limited to one of a few set personalities and responses. In other words, your character is in no way or form YOU.

It is weird for you to create a female character in a WoW or any other multiplayer RPG. Because in a multiplayer RPG, your character is a representation of YOU to other players. It is how they see you. If your an overweight 47 year old guy in a wheelchair having people see you (and in many cases treat you) like a skinny pretty elf chick, well that's both weird and disturbing. Even if your RP'ing, your voice is ultimately the voice of your character, your character IS YOU.
your right, they should have a wheelchair bound char for ppl who are in them

'If I'm gonna spend all day looking at an arse, it might as well be one that's good to look at'

To which I say: Dual monitors, watch porn as you play.

I only have the problem when they attempt to excuse it by saying they prefer watching a girl's ass for hours on end rather than a guy.

the only time I have gone as a female character (And I'm a Guy) was in games where there was no choice of sex for the character. I.E. Diablo 2, If u want to be an assassin or a Sorceress, your stuck with a female. not so anymore with D3 happily. But other than those situational times, I always play as a Male to, at least in some respect, accurately represent myself.

You paid for the game, do what you want to do with it.
Usually, I prefr a male character, as I am a male, but I don't mind when I play a good game with a female main character, like Portal.

When I want to be badass, I play as a male. Like others have said, I can relate alot more to them. To me, it doesn't make sense to see a woman filling the "badass" character. Sometimes I'll do a female playthrough just to see what it's like and it isn't as cool as male. I will play as a female if it makes sense though.

Like in RPGs, it makes no sense for a female to be swinging around a sword or axe. However, if she uses a bow, a dagger or magic, it does. In the Mass Effect games, although she looks sexy in a skin-tight spacesuit, it's very wierd to see female Shepard out there giving orders and being a badass. With male that is not the case. Oh and the male and female have the same dialogue so she says some strange things too. But in a game like Fable II where there IS no dialogue, you can feel free to imagine your female character exactly how you want her to be.

I'm on of those nerds who when I encounters an RPG I like I almost always play it two or three times and always try and do things totally different just for a different experience. Because of this, I always play as a female character at least once, and I see nothing wrong with wanting to play the game a different way.

That being said it's really fucked up to play as a female character solely for the purpose of maxing out her chest size and starring at her in her underwear.

There isn't, she is probably just one of those stuck up people who think most things are weird.

You should slap her...Na, I kid, but just explain it's a tradition, and IDK, playing as both gender is good, especially on a dialogue heavy game. You can get a lot of subtle variation that makes it more or less interesting.

I usually make characters of both gender in rpgs, altough I prefer girl when I have the choice, because of the omnipresence of male heroes.

I had recently bought Dragon Age (Yes, I know.. im a bit late to it all) and made my first character which was a Female Elf Rouge.

Upon doing this, my girlfriend gave me a brief lecture about why it was weird for a guy to make a female character. Its just something I have always done. In RPGs I make a Male Human Warrior, a Female Elf Rogue and a Male Elf Mage(or that RPGs varient).

Does anyone else see anything wrong with making a character of the opposite sex?
no problem at all aside from this very question getting asked about twice a week
