Valve's announced multiple times that there will be no Half-Life 2: Episode 3. At all. If they ever did return to the Half-Life series, it'd be Half-Life 3 instead.
Valve also said they were about to release an RPG about fairies. They sent zombies, instead.

It's been too long. I've lost interest in the story and the engine feels very dated.
Why do you think they've been updating Source every once-in-a-while? Portal 2 certainly didn't come out bad. Heck, even Half-Life: Source's engine (2004) feels up to modern standards. I have no idea where you're getting your information. 'Cause, it's truly messed up.

How awfully convenient that it comes out the very last day of the year... sounds legit

Quick, somebody apply the the Valve time conversion algorithm to the 31st December 2012!
It should be out around... 32nd of May 2015.
Your math is off, I calculate 29th of February 2029

OT: I call fake. Until it is officially on Steam I will not believe random sites who claim it's release after Christmas. Seriously, why would they release it after Christmas?

Another day, another HL2Ep3 rumour.

Some things never change.
Am I the only one who doesn't want an Episode 3?

Just give me Half-Life 3 and then I will be happy.
Then you'll be happy to know that's what we will be getting. Newell has said on several occasions they've abandoned the "episodic" design model in favor of "games as a service". Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, and the Left 4 Deads being prime examples.

Likewise, if you look at their recent employee handbook, as well as several statements made by Newell in interviews, it's clear there is now Episode 3; only Half-Life 3.

If I can find the link again, I'll post it, but there was one interview wherein he said specifically, "The team that have been working on Half-Life 3 are still working on it."

Basically, they've been hard at work on the game since the Orange Box released. So, don't worry people. The game IS coming. It's just a matter of when.

Heads up, chuckleheads:
There will NEVER be another Half Life game. Not an Episode 3, not a regular 3, not some weird subtitle. Never.
See above. Or better yet, here: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/23/gabe-on-ricochet-2-delay-but-he-doesnt-mean-ricochet/

Dude, have you seen CS:GO's graphics? I mean, it's no modern day Crysis, but saying it's up to modern standards would be a drastic understatement.
And it's extremely optimised.

I can max it out at near 60 FPS at 1600x1200 on my 6670 which is a hell of an achievement.
I'll say. It still amazes me how quickly the game loads up. I can go from desktop to playing a match in under 30 seconds. (assuming I skip intros and accounting for my slow clicking in the menus.)

Hell, it takes me at least four times as long to get TF2 to go from desktop to match. I can definitely say, along with you, that CS:GO is "optimized".

You have a beta pass?

Dude, if they ever give you more invites, send me a PM if you're not giving them out to other friends. I could trade you something for it. (A proper game, not TF2 hats or something.)

But yeah, optimizing games seems to be something Valve do really well. I remember being able to max out Half Life 2 on a low end machine which had graphics card that was meant for watching movies and nothing more.
I had an extra, but gave it to a friend.

However, I should have 2 more keys heading my way at some point soon. (I hope)

Basically, I'm "owed" those keys from some people I know.

If I get them, I'll toss one your way if you like. Though if I don't before the end of July, you might as well forget it. The game launches August 21st. (and for only $15 USD)

Just occurred to me. What if one of the "secret games" to be revealed the last day of E3 is Valve announcing they've gone back to making Prospero?

They've shown they're open to expanding into fantasy games, as well as non-first-person games. (a la Dota 2) So who knows? Could happen. Doubtful though.

When I learned of Prospero I was intrigued. It sounded like a drastic departure from what they did with Half-Life. Kinda wish they'd co-developed it along side Half-Life.

HL3 is coming out already?

You do know why the third game is taking its sweet ass time getting released right?

There is a reason why Valve calls this game series HALF-LIFE.

I think the date is just a placeholder.

Although, This could hint at a HL2EP3 announcement sometime in the near-ish future.

The week after Christmas? Heck no. The week before Christmas I'd believe, but missing out on the BEST sales month of the year by a week to release one of the most anticipated game? Nope, I'm not believing it.
