Awezum. It's really is. I didn't play the first game before the second, but it didn't affect the game for me. You pick it up, and it's a fairly different story anyway. Either way, play both, because you won't regret it.

Half-life is definitely worth playing. It was way ahead of its time and it's a very compelling game ... you'll know what I mean when you try it - it's like one of those rare books that you can't put down.

It has variety in everything. Weapons, maps, gameplay, everything.

I don't really think you need to play the first one prior to the second. All of the mechanics in the second are better...come to think of it the second game is better overall. You're only going to miss out on some story.

Wait for Black Mesa. Its gonna be HL1 with the HL2 graphics and physics engine.
I don't know, that remains to be seen. So far, it's looking less and less like the game it's trying to copy. It seems as though the team is taking more and more liberties as their little pet project progresses, and not necessarily for the better.

I would say get Half Life Source, it's Half Life one touched up a bit to look/work better. Only a bit though, it still looks veeeeeeeeeeery dated.

They are changing it? What are the changes you have seen?

To be honest, the only Half Life game I've played is HL2-Episode 1 and it was hella fun.

Hello everyone, 1st post oh my! I had only played the 1st one at my friend?s house. And only for a short time, so I wasn?t all that sure on the story. But I read the plot on wiki and that was really helpful.

Yeah, they're changing quite a few things. For starters, the entire original music and voice-over soundtracks were tossed by the way side. It was part licensing, as they'd have to ask Valve for permission to use them, but it was mostly just the dev team's choice as they wanted to make their own sounds. (adding to their growing arrogance, they said they could do better than Valve did and didn't even bother asking permission to use the original soundtracks) They've also begun changing the weapons. They've removed some and added a few of their own design. Then there's the changes to the maps. While most have remained pretty faithful to the original game, the dev team has started adding their own maps in place of some they thought "didn't belong" in the original game. Now, I'm not entirely certain how much they've actually changed and to what degree, but from what I've heard from beta-testers and others that have either worked with or talked with the dev team, there's still a fair amount being altered.

EDIT: As my anticipation for Black Mesa Source wanes, I have however had my interests piqued by the announcement of another mod team working on a full Source conversion of Half-Life: Opposing Force. From the look of things, what they're doing is what the Black Mesa team started out doing. Actually recreating the original game, from scratch, but remaining faithful to everything in the original, including the soundtrack.

I tried to get into Half Life 2 and kept asking "How many hours to I need to play into Half Life 2 before this pistol induced boredom ends?"
I never turned it back on to find out. I hear its awesome.
Portal, EP1, and Team Fortress 2 were all awesome.

They mostly explain anything you did'nt know eventually or there are slight hints you can pick up. Just Wiki it or give VALVe another $10 so they can finish episode 3 faster (It's supposed to come out in 2010)

I wish valve would hurry up and make their own version. And include it with Episode 3. Which seems too be coming out 3 days after duke nukem forever.
