I feel sorry for those like you who have no idea what it's like to play in a strong community of people with similar likes and dislikes. From many of the comments here, many are clueless what a good community of people is all about. We know its not a war stupid. We play Halo 2 because we love the game. And until the last X-box dies or Microsoft pulls the plug it will keep going. Some don't have the money to buy a PC. Besides some have it on PC and hate that version- and some of us have Macs before the Intel processor and would have to buy a win-doze. Many of us have played Halo 3 and don't like it. We all have our favorite games as I'm sure you do. But I'm not going to stoop and criticize your choice of games.

That cracked me up dude, nice play. I do somewhat admire the determination of these obsessed individuals, but it's still pretty stupid that they're "fighting" to keep their game when there is actually no fight involved. It's just an aircraft carrier versus a potatogun. There are passionate people, and there are ones who need to move the fuck on. For christ sake you can still get the PC version and it's online enabled, as far as we know indefinitly, but these people insist on crying that it's not going to work on their system? Balls. If they're THAT serious about their game they WILL buy it on PC, it's as simple as that, and if they don't that's just dogmatic logic.
My money is betting that one of the 'rewards' bungie have promissed is keycodes to an up-coming LIVE arcade version for the 360, which can run on the 360s' network, but hey that's just my guess. I can see them doing that sometime down the line anyway, since I'm sure a lot of people missed out on the previous generation of games and I'm sure they still would like as many people as possible to experience the franchise which became their lifeblood for a good 10 years.

The majority of these responses are astounding. 'just play halo 3 its basically the same game' 'they need to stop complaining'. if anyone took time to notice, they are not complaining they are trying to play out the last moments of an extraordinary game, that essentially established xbox live. to any of us that played halo 2 it is not the same as halo 3 or odst, in my opinion it is substantially better in gameplay and community. the most brilliant thing of it all is the integrity of it, something a majority of you bashers probably do not have. I congratulate these true gamers and keep up the fight.

3. Assasin's Creed 2 doesn't need servers to run.
The PC version does. Along with Settlers 7 and Splinter Cell: Conviction.
We'll once those server are taken off perminantly, a simple crack of the DRM (though it may well have been patched out when that happens).

Servers for abox live online MP probably harder to do.

I suppose using PC's you could bridge home networks and LAN play, but thats a hell of alot more faf.

For their steadfast dedication: A free copy of the new Halo, perhaps?
For their hard headed stupidity: A boot to the head! *boot*

That's pretty awesome. Standing up for a game they love.
But they can't stay on forever, and they knew this day would come, so it's quite immature.
It's kinda like a toddler refusing to move.

being one of the last people online you people really dont understand why people are playing halo 2. we play for fun. you think we want a reward? we could care less. unless idlers are idling to do that. otherwise your statements are far off. but thanks to those who support us.

I could only wish to create something that is SO loved that people will go this far to continue playing and enjoying what they have.

This is a beautiful story.

Thank you Halo 2, goodnight sweet prince.

It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.

imagine being the last one. wondering around coagulation or outskirts for the last time with no one to kill. just slowly walking threw the halls of titan which were once filled with pew pews, shrieks, and racist comments of incompetent 14 year olds. imagine being the last one. goodbye friends, goodbye enemies. just looking out over the edge or cliff face admiring the scene.... goodbye world *logs off*

There's comes a point at which you just have to say:

'Dude, let it go, it's a game!'

I may be a fan myself, but this is so far beyond the normal it's not even heroic or brave or anything.

It's just monumentally stupid. Ah well, their life, their choices.
That's exactly what I'm thinking. It's a video game. It's incredibly stupid to put up a last stand for that sort of thing, instead of working on more worthwhile projects in your life.
I don't see what's so stupid about it. I mean, yes, it's just a game, and not worthy of devotion or anything, but that's not what these guys did.

The entire difficulty of this "last stand" was simply leaving their system on while they were away. If anything, I applaud their ingenuity.

Institutionalized? But yeah, I know what you mean. Well, it had to happen eventually - the old xbox's were too hard coded to allow for changes to the Xbox live service, heh. At least this shouldn't happen to XBox 360/PS3's and later consoles cus now they have updating abilities, heh.

Anyone who still plays on an orginal Xbox needs to get kicked in the nuts.
You do realized there are a lot of poor people, and even more than usual despite the alleged recovery of the economy (according to the stock market). Some day it might be you who can't afford a new generation console.

That said, I think Microsoft is in the wrong here. Simply put I feel those people are entitled to play the games they bought online indefinatly. That's part of the product they puchused. To me the only way Microsoft should be turning off their servers or support of those games should be if it goes out of business entirely.

I understand other points of view on this, but to me this pretty much summarizes why I am against the idea of games going digital, or relying on digital connections in general. Right now we're seeing exactly why buying a game that is dependant on the company in any way is a bad idea.

I imagine in 10 years or so we'll hear about how Assasin's Creed 2's support servers are going offline and nobody will be able to play their copy of AC2 anymore. Strictly speaking I feel that if I bought a copy of a game, I have the right to just up and play it online 10 years later on an old machine if I get the hankering. By the same token even if the servers are deserted for decades at a time, I feel a group of Octogenerians in an home down the road would have the right to all login to Halo 2 with their antique X-boxs and play a few rounds for nostolgia if they wanted to.

"Cybersquatting" has apparently accomplished nothing though.
Microsoft are Nazi's they will never do what you want but most of those people who played on Halo 2 have a 360 and those were the people I was talking about.

halo 2 was a great game though! i just don't see why in Halo 3 they had to take away weapons wehicles and levels and put other one's in there place, the spectre etc, the magnums and other weapons and the map packs they were what made halo2 amazing so why take them out?

They've already released Halo 3 on demand, sot that would just be pointless.

OT: Good show to those guys, I just know there will be people playing consoles (and PCs) at the end of the world

This is just going to cause one of their houses to burn down because their Xbox overheated and exploded. Seriously, my Xbox overheats after 6 hours, so I can't imagine what this is doing to theirs.

Do you even know what a Nazi is?

Hm. I have fond memories of Halo 2, and fewer fond ones of Halo 3. Yeah, you still had your annoying brats playing Halo 2, but I think because it was a lot of people's first Live FPS game it holds a special place.

But on to the whole "how can MS do this blah blah" debate - They can, they will and they have. It is constantly written on things that the service will not be around forever (assuming it is would be stupid) and if/when it will be terminated there will be a sufficient amount of notice. They gave that amount of notice and Bungie went out of their way to give the game a good send off, and I don't think the fans should react like this. Both Bungie and Microsoft have operated within the correct terms, and it's unrealistic and immature to expect this service to remain in operation indefinitely.

I think they've made it pretty clear that they want to play Halo 2. You never know, they might have 3 anyway.

1. You're being unrealistic, If they supported every outdated gaming platform nothing would move forward.
2. Mircosoft stopped working on the original xbox years ago and can't be responsible for people unable to upgrade.
3. Assasin's Creed 2 doesn't need servers to run.
4. Some people wanting to play Halo 2 can still play it, and can play it on multiplayer - split-screen or LAN.
1: Unrealistic how? Quake still has plenty of plyers and servers kicking about online. Why in a peer to peer service that makes no demand on servers* is it unrealistic to expect players to at least be allowed to continue setting up their own games?
Switching off matchmaking fine, but blanket killing the entire system is plain arbitrary.

3. Yes it does, if Ubisoft ever switches off AC2's authentication servers, nobody gets to play it ever again, unless they're a software pirate. Although that only applies to PC players.

*Aside from Xbox Live login authentication, which every player on live has to do anyway, it's not game specific.

It would be pretty cool to be one of the only 24 people on the planet still playing a game...
But I wonder is there anyone still playing Halo 1?
