As much as I think Xbox live badly needs to reigned in, I hope they're not ovary vindictive with the enforcement.
Really, REALLY XD. 10 Points for shoe-horning that one in.

OT: I guess that if they do follow through with this it will be an end to the stereotype of Xbox live players XD. But to be fair, if the community won't regulate itself and people are being justifiably hurt (and I know of some cases where it is rage flame with the sexiest/racist comments) then it is up to an outside group to deal with it. It is the 'this is why we can't have nice things' argument.
To those that want to trash talk, tempering it with a few positive comments can go a long way. I have raged before in League of Legends but I am the first to comment when someone does something right (even/especially after berating them earlier). Sometimes things are stressful, the difference between a stressed person and a jerk is a matter of praising the good when it comes.

Truthfully the WOman wants? to take away right but no I'm just surprised this is what you want where no one can unleash where everyone up tight and scared. It's no wonder Anti depressants are the drug of choice now. If you?re that scared of the real world feel free to close chat with just your friends. It just amazes me everyone to busy worrying about everyone else's fun. Heck some time look up the boots of blinding speed from Morrowind. Man that bring back memories. I got off topic it?s just the world we are going to give our kids. No one can take a nasty name anymore.

There's a difference between being called a bad name and having to wade through so much bile and hostility that I honestly consider popping in Halo Reach to play matchmaking more of a chore that it's worth. When XBL is commonly know as "the place where 12 year olds run around, screaming and swearing at the top of their lungs" then clearly we need to do a bit of cleanup. More than a few people have already posted that the bile and discrimination that they get from XBL is so bad that they don't even want to play it, and I fail to see what's so bad about wanting to get rid of that.

Also you're being rather insulting. All people want is XBL to be slightly less hostile, and frankly it's not a surprise, at the moment it's about as friendly as a rabid saber toothed tiger

...that's a bit reactionary and juvenile. Plus if this is based off player feedback it can also be horribly abused. Was it really so hard to to give people warnings and month-bans first?

I have to ask the question why do you play it then? Seems kind of masochistic, you?re trying to change the status quo because a few people can't handle it. Most people know what?s coming when they get on. Again there are other choice play another game, Play muted it's not like anyone one uses tactics here. People get on to trash talk. Maybe join the fun or do what I do. Find the first person to go after you and make them yours for the night. Follow then and kill only them and watch them melt into a rage I promise it can be great fun. Halo can be a great place to vent that built up anger.

On the one hand, I very much approve of strict, nigh-Draconian punishments.

On the other, I could see this going very wrong very quickly.

No I agree, they should be punished. But a permaban/zero-tolerance protocol is total overkill. There has to be a more just way in dealing with this.
There Is an argument to be had there, but I rather like the perma ban idea. This is a deep rooted problem, we're gonna need some heavy firepower to get rid of it.
What happens when I get frustrated and call someone a whore and get banned? What happens when you get banned because a poor sport can't take losing and reports you for harassment? Have you heard about Microsoft's appeal system? It's practically non existent. And just the principle of it all. Are we so thin skinned that we need authority to punish people that say mean things to us, even when we are provided with options to mute and block them?
First of all, if you can simple get banned from someone reporting you wrongfully, there wouldn't be anyone left on XBL, the banning system isn't that sensitive. In fact, you can actually get banned for abusing the report system. Also there's a difference between trash talking and harassing someone because of their gender/race/sexual preference. Somehow I don't think that a single comment will be seen as that.

I've already said why I don't take mute and block as enough, for every asshole I block there are ten more around the corner, and I am freaking tired of trying to get into a game of Halo only to have to deal with jackasses at every turn. It turns playing video games into a very unpleasant chore. Also the mute and block options are inadequate because they mean that you're already being harassed, and frankly I'd prefer it if the online didn't call to use them in the first place. Also, why the Hell should I scramble around flipping a bunch of different switches so that one guy can't continue to harass me because people don't feel like stopping him? What you want to do is make life less convenient for the victims, what I want to do is make it less convenient for the abuser.
Because why should you be called a victim? What makes you so special that we should take away people's paid for subscriptions and and setup an overhauled report system to make way for your feelings? If you got a problem with something, don't expect everyone to get out of your way to fix it. You are the one that needs to change and adapt to it, not everyone else.

Besides, everyone is spelling doom and gloom for Xbox, but as someone who uses is often enough to know the community, it's no where near as bad as people are describing it. It's not "10 more around the corner." I've met several girls on Xbox, and one only one occasion was one of them, kind of, harassed. I say kind of because we all had a good laughed. But the whole:

LadyZephyr said:

I have never heard or seen happen. Wherever that came from is bullshit or very rare.

On top of that, the report system doesn't do jackshit at this point anyway. Everything argued in this thread is pointless because Microsoft just doesn't care. They ban hackers and JTAGs very quickly, but its rare that actual cheaters and assholes are banned for bad conduct. Hell, look up how many times MinnesotaBurns has been banned. He hasn't broken Terms of Microsoft once, and he has had several Xbox's bricked.

Define "a few" I find it hard to believe that the people who would enjoy the decrees of sexism on XBL to be in the minority. Also by "a few" you must mean "every last woman who plays XBL" And truth be told I can get into some nice matches on Halo, some where I can just get some nice team mates and have a good time...but those are heavily contrasted by people that loose their temper quickly and fly off on a rant the second I do something a little wrong. And women online have it even worse because they're constantly pestered simply because of their gender and probably find it even harder than me to find a nice match. And I keep playing because I refuse to be turned off my favorite game series because some people decided that it would be fun to be jerks and make things less fun for everyone minus themselves, much like how I refuse to believe that this policy shouldn't be implemented because people don't want to be stripped of their rights to be sexist, homophobic and racist and constantly turn away the non-straight non-male non-white demographic. That's my stance. Now then, I'm tried, and I'm hitting the hay. Good night.

This is a welcome change.

Although I fear attention whores will abuse this. We will wait and see I suppose. Also, I have actually witnessed sexism go both ways (Soul Calibur 5, yuck), so it will be interesting to see if this system is biased and only works to instantly drop the hammer on any males girl gamers and white knights deem offensive/they simply don't like/can taunt.

Oh well, ex never gave my Xbox back, so I'll just retreat into the arms of the glorious PC master race.

A. sexism in the gaming community is not at virus level. Excessive and malicious harrassment is another story. Or in other words, giving trolls a megaphone.

B. the community is "represented" by trolls. not sexists. It is not like the moment the female gamer leaves these people turn into gentlemen. They just find a new target. Are there sexists in the community? yes. but most of the harassment is from trolls (ie equal opportunity haters). Saying sexism is the main cause of negativity in the community is not only wrong, but it prevents curing the problem as a whole for EVERYONE's benefit, not just women's. Honestly saying sexism is a virus in the gaming community is sensationalizing.

C. it is easy to endorse sacrifice when it is some other group paying the butcher's bill in innocent collateral damage, if there is any.

That is ridiculous. If someone is getting pushed around on XBL because of their gender than it isn't "their problem" and I really don't see why we should harbor and protect that kind of stuff. It's a major problem considering how many women on this thread are actually saying that they might actually consider playing XBL again. And according to what you said, the report system doesn't really do anything, which is exactly why we NEED an overhauled report system. Also man, why exactly shouldn't we strive to better ourselves? Why should we just be content with allowing a bunch of assholes running around making the games less fun for everyone else? Why? Why should we defend that? I can't remember the last time I met a girl on XBL, and I have a pretty good idea why. Now then, I am tired and I am going to bed.

This is probably a good time to shed light on the fact that "sexism" is a term that really only applies when dealing with females, because males have been throwing sexist remarks at their own gender since the dawn of time and laughed it off.

So on XBox Live you'll see a comment from a female to a male like "I bet you're a virgin" (remember it's a BAD thing to be called a virgin in male circles) and that comment will be tolerated just fine, but the moment you see a male say to a female "I bet you're a slut/whore" then the banhammer shall come down swiftly.

Ask yourselves, why is this issue being highlighted in 2012 when the Halo series have existed for over 8 years? Did females only JUST enter Halo circles or something? Sexism was never even a remote concern on anyone's mind, older-generation gamers will know this.

It's a good move to take action sexist chit-chat, it falls under every other kind of rude/discriminatory language and should be dealt with accordingly. But a lifetime ban just sounds stupid. That's like getting perma-banned for saying "oh fuck I lost" because you swore.

The fact remains that ONLY reason such drastic measures are being taken is to make females feel more comfortable in that environment. This is solely aimed at improving the situation for females, because the "sexism" issue doesn't even exist with males. A male wouldn't give two shits if a female threw a sexist remark at him, even if it was a whole army of females - and if he complained he would be called overly-sensitive, weak and pathetic...like a child who goes crying to their mother because another child said mean things to him.

I hate it when people say "we are doing this because we don't tolerate sexism" when in fact they mean "we are doing this because girls are coming into the playground, the boys are being mean to the girls, the girls are feeling insecure/uncomfortable/unwelcome...from now on, if you're mean to the girls you will be fucking burned alive!". Because that's EXACTLY what they mean deep down. Enough sugar-coating the true message and trying to soften everything under words like "sexism" and "offensive". Those words never even existed in gaming circles up until recently.

Kiki and Bonnie have avoided saying that directly, obviously. Incidentally this kind of thing only happens when there are two female leads taking charge of a game, eh?

Of course, you have a RIGHT to be insulted every time you log onto an online game of any stripe, didn't you know that?

I mean, decency? Who needs that?
