Alyx Vance, pretty much whenever she's around. She's the first NPC that I've had to escort where I felt like the one being escorted.

And then I met Craig Boone, back when he was bugged to have a 100% critical strike chance. Hell, even after the bug was patched out, he still was able to kick extreme amounts of ass even without my help.

Yeah in Bad Company 2 the other day, actually! I was generally being hammered (forget the chapter name now, we were heading up some stairs to reach a sattelite) and the screen was about as blotched red as it could be, and the Sargeant dude (I think) got the guy cos I couldn't get a bullet in edgeways!

AI has massively improved on games in recent times!

Also L4D, they can be equal parts lifesaving and retarded.

Oh, the few dozen times something has been chasing me in Fallout and Oblivion. I often use NPCs as a way to get some more firepower on an enemy.

For a game where you wouldn't expect it, the sniper in Ghost Recon AW 2 pegged a guy as he was about to nail me with an rpg. Course I told her to do it, but that doesn't matter sometimes.

I remember an unfortunate moment with the explosive rifle in Undead Nightmare. There was a person being attacked by a zombie, and I shot the zombie. With the Explosive rifle. At close range. With low health. There was no survivors.
No, I imagine that there wouldnt be survivors, probably a sticky paste though

If i had a cap for every time Craig put a bullet in someones head who was about to eviscerate/riddle me id have enough to buy the strip.

He even stole my kill of ceaser, having punched him unconcious i planned to beat him to death while he was down. Unfortunately craig decided to shift a little to the left of where i told him to stand 200 yards away and exploded his face for me. Nothing against him though. He killed like 8 personal guard that could murk me in 2 punches. The man is a god. With my scoped hunting rifle as well as his we kill almost 80% of things before they see us. ED provides the perception to see everything from at least 1 mile away.

Yes. Heres a couple:
In Fallout: New Vegas, I had the companion Boone with me as I was wandering the Mojave. He starts shooting so I look around hitting the VATS button and found nothing so I just figured it was something that merged into the ground (happens alot for me). I keep walking then I hear Boone getting hit, I turn around and I then see a Deathclaw charging after me (I guess it lost interest in Boone). In mid lunge at me Boone fired one last time and sent the dead corpse flying into me.

In minecraft, I was wandering around at night with 3 hearts trying to get back to my outpost. I hear a skeletonn so I decide nows the best time as any to start a noob tower. No sooner then that do I hear the distinct sound of a creeper hiss. Moments before it explodes, it gets hit by something. I turn around, and its running torward the Skeleton. Safe to say I was safe from the creeper at that point.

I ..am also going with Boone. The dude snipped what I didn't even know was there. I was just walking merrily along, muttering the tune for "Jingle Jangle Jingle" or "Johnny Guitar" for the one hundredth time and then I got the view of something getting its head exploded. Scared the shit out of me at first. He also killed a deathclaw right before it eviscerated my character.

Edit: I may add the Icewind Dale Chapter 2 orcs...that blew themselves up while trying to ambush my party. Not teammates but very sporting of them regardless.

Republic Commando. Best squadmate AI ever. If you go down, they will either haul your ass back up into the fight, or they will finish the droids up on their own and THEN revive you when the coast is clear.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Oh, and I'm sure Alyx has saved me a few times.

Numerous times in Fallout: New Vegas where I've had Veronica following me, only for her to disappear and for me to hear KER-CHUNK KER-CHUNK KER-CHUNK as she punches an enemy to death that I hadn't even noticed.

Ha, that reminds me of a Red Dead miracle. In RDR i was surrounded by a pack of wolves after a pretty epic gun fight and i was going to die, but a random guy getting chased by wolves ran by and my attackers left me to go after that poor bastard.
Bahahaha, that's the best thing ever.

To contribute myself (I guess this qualifies), in Fallout 3 I was in a battle with three raiders, one of which had a missile launcher. I already had low health, so this wasn't going to help things. Luckily though, he was standing behind a post and he fired a rocket, blowing himself and his two friends to smithereens. Thank you raider!

We should just rename this thread to "How did Boone save your ass today?"
Ninja'd; Boone is the only useful teammate in New Vegas in my opinion, save Joshua Graham, but you only get him for like three minutes, because he's so OP he gets you to the end of Honest Hearts ridiculously fast. Boone got me out of a few scrapes, mainly against Legion, but he was rather useless against Deathclaws due to his insistence on using his machete, even when they were miles away.

Technically I'd regard friendly Stalkers in Call of Pripyat as teammates, so they've saved my ass a few times, mainly by pissing off the Chimera about to waste me, so it goes after them and allows me to heal up and reload before going after it.

Invincible NPCs in Oblivion have been useful in that department before, especially when the guards are trying to kill me.

Telling Boone to stand still and do nothing while the man who acts as a leader and symbol of the slavers who took his wife is within 200 yards of his rifle... and you're going to stand between the two of them... wow... you've got balls of steel, BiscuitTrouser. =)

the flying White Cat Nall, from Lunar. That floating little squeaky toy seemed to rez me at least every other Boss fight. (I don't think the help he gave at the Final Boss counts though)

and Garrus in ME2, except I don't know how often he saved me, and how often he killed whatever I was trying to snipe. It got to the point that I was no longer trying to beat the enemy, I was just trying to beat Garrus.

100% true, those guys are absolute beasts.

My own story involves my heroic personal guard in mount and blade. I always had atleast 2 NPC's who could hold their own in combat.
This one time when me and my 3 brutes where chopping a way through the enemy army one of them trows one of this spears and a second later a now unconcious enemy hero comes flying through the screen, cavalry spear still in hand. He would have killed me instantly.

In Left4Dead, when all was lost after a greifer pulled double incap+tank+car alarm horde combo before rage quit, Bot Francis Auto-shotgun the zombie horde, kited the tank through fire, and acctually lived long enough to pick one of us up which acctually saved the day...

it was the Day Francis learned how to kite.

he then got stuck on a door and a boomer scratched him to death.

Just once from memory...Kat in halo reach dove away from a grenade and into a plasma that was about to hit me...though that was more an accident while saving herself than her helping me...
I've only had a handful of times when a marine in any Halo genuinely did something intelligent that saved our lives.
Whether they sniped a jackal in Halo 2 that was impossible for me to hit, or finished off an elite that was about to beat me down, the 4 or 5 times a Halo NPC has saved me, that doesn't make up for the hundreds of thousands of times they have done nothing, or the thousands of times that they have literally killed me themselves.
