Republic Commando. Best squadmate AI ever. If you go down, they will either haul your ass back up into the fight, or they will finish the droids up on their own and THEN revive you when the coast is clear.
I forgot about that game, it was so amazing

I was doing a TDM in Star Wars: Jedi Academy with a friend of mine. It was his team against mine.

He and I were locked in an intense lightsaber battle and I was down to one health. He charged and took a swing, I back flipped out of the way. As I was in the air, he charged at me again to hit me and kill me when I landed. As he was running towards my landing spot, one of the NPCs on my team ran by, casually cut my friends head off, and continued running on his path.

Thanks, Jedi Trainer. You rock.

Space Marine. My invincible partners helped me get some achievments :D
Sweet lord, yes. Immortal asskickers are so good to have around. Once I figured out you can retreat behind them and a lot of enemies will attack them instead, I started breezing through hard difficulty. I got mad love for Sidonus and Leandros.

Also, I played the crap out of Persona 3 and all your teammates are sort of NPCs. Akihiko saved my ass more times than I can count and Shinji was amazing for the short period of time he's available. I just stopped worrying whenever I was one turn away from death in a boss fight, because I knew Aki would take care of everything. If I ever get around to P3Portable, I'll definitely play female MC and romance him :p.

I played metro 2033 recently and that actually happened a fair amount in this game. If the NPCs die you lose but for the most part it feels like you?re the one being escorted not them. In the mission where you have to use explosives to block a tunnel I ran crying back to Khan so he would save my ass form being Nosalis chow many times. Sometimes I would be running low on ammo so run around dodging mutants so the NPC's would deal with them. In D6 and biomass Miller was the one killing the most of the amoebas while I took out the spores.
In fallout 3 I was being swamped by super mutants and running low on ammo when a group of mercenaries happened to come along and save my arse. And since most of them died I got to steal their equipment too. Yay. Doesn?t make up for all the times bloody NPC?s got me killed in this game tho.
I know it?s happened elsewhere as well but I?m having trouble thing of specific examples.

When I got attacked by Legion Assassins in the middle of a gun fight with a Legion Patrol things got nasty and Boone went down (Not before he took out 3 of them I think it was on his own).

So I was sat behind cover trying to take potshots with my Sniper to keep them back and just before the Thermic Lance weilding Legion could get into range and smack me about a group of Merchents and a NCR patrol came round the corner and saved me.... And well when I say that I mean they distracted the Legion so I could take more potshots.

(And yes I was incredibly low level at this point and struggled against assassins, attacked on the bridge near the farm between Nipton and Ranger Station Charlie.)

Have you finished Space Marine? Because: SERIOUS SPOILERS:

Sidonis gets killed and Leandros betrays your ass

Yes, I've finished it and yes I know that. I meant more from a gameplay perspective. They're the best bullet sponges I've ever had. Also:

Sidonus does die obeying your orders and fighting Chaos demons like an absolute boss, so he's awesome all around.

Yes, he is a badass ... out of all the vaguely charactarised NPCs I like him the most :D

Just once from memory...Kat in halo reach dove away from a grenade and into a plasma that was about to hit me...though that was more an accident while saving herself than her helping me...
I've only had a handful of times when a marine in any Halo genuinely did something intelligent that saved our lives.
Whether they sniped a jackal in Halo 2 that was impossible for me to hit, or finished off an elite that was about to beat me down, the 4 or 5 times a Halo NPC has saved me, that doesn't make up for the hundreds of thousands of times they have done nothing, or the thousands of times that they have literally killed me themselves.
Indeed, i still HATE Kat for the checkpoint from which she would proceed to drive off a cliff after 15 seconds >.>
That was on SLASO too, missed a 20K weekly challenge because of that D:

Standing toe to toe with the Alpha Deathclaw with mere milliseconds to live. Everything suddenly slowed down as a well placed sniper round from Boone took the creature by its head and spun it sideways. Dead.

Yeah, i've got to give a big thanks to the group of Caesar's Legion soldiers for bravely getting themselves murdered by a pack of nightstalkers, weakening the nightstalkers enough with their deaths for the travelling merchants to finish the job. A real npc team effort, that one. Guess we know why merchants are safer in Legion territory...

edit : oh, you were talking about teammates? Well, Veronica in a suit of power armour does nicely at protecting my ass from Cazador, usually ends up being stung through it somehow and dying in the process though.

Well in New Vegas I was walking through a cave i found that had a few deatn claws in it. I round a Corner and all 13 feet of the Legendary death claw charges right at me, Boone steps in front of it and takes a few pot shots then gets 1 hitted by it. I start back peddling shooting wildly get its health down to 2 HP but my Health is at 1 HP. It swings back to strike but just before it hits its head explodes. Boone is standing behind it with an Anti Material Rifle I gave him just before we entered the cave.

HAHA Boone is apparently just a natural at pulling peoples ass out of the fire. All he asks in return is to not take his hat. That's an NPC you can trust

In COD4 I was on vetern. I was the flashback mission as Price. Right at the end where you need to defend for 10mins. I had been trying this mission all afternoon. MacMillan is shit as balls on vetern. Seemed like he always needs a clip to kill one guy.

I had finally found a tactic that worked well. The helicopter had landed all I needed to do was the impossible task of carring MacMillan to the helicopter. I make my way up to him shooting guys as I went. I run out of ammo. with 2 guys closing MacMillan drops them both like the game was on recruit. With 2 shoots. I pick MacMillan up carry him to the helicopter and win.

MacMillan is awesome. He sure knows how to save the day.

In Fallout3, Fawkes saved my ass tons of times... OK so he isn't ideal when your trying to be stealthy, but when you are a big green dude with unlimited ammo, stealth is kinda redundant.

As at least half of the other people in this thread have stated, Boone is basically a god. He has saved my ass SO MANY TIMES. If only he didn't hate the Legion(and thus my often Legion-affiliated courier) so much...
