Has EA already failed Battlefield 3?

I think the major problem with this title is that the developers try to make it too much of a CoD killer instead of making a battlefield 2 sequel, by that I mean is that in the alpha there are no Commander, no Squad leader and no Commo Rose. These things really made BF2 apart from the others there was an hierarchical system like in the army and when people when the right mind set played it, the game was great.

I'm a pretty big Steam fan boy I will confess (over 300 games and counting) and at first I didn't like the idea of having to "deal with another service".

I was part of the Alpha trials for BF3 and as such had to download Origin and I gotta confess that I liked the layout and feel of it. Very crisp and clean and system friendly.

And to be honest, I had a hoot with BF3 MP so I know I will be most likely getting it. (But will wait on the reviews just in case) I'm still not super thrilled with having to deal with "multiple" services, but I think I should be able to handle it. :)

As i've said time and again, I won't use steam because I like to be in control of my games and how they work. So the chances of me using Origin are someone between slim and i'd rather lick shirley crabtree's armpits.
I see this every once and a while and it confuses me. Steam gives you the ability to play offline. Hell, it gives you the ability to burn an infinite number of copies of your game w/ the CD key if you want physical copies instead. I figure I have the same control now as I did with the 100+ CDs I had clogging up my bookshelf. I just have an empty bookshelf now. *shrugs*
I'll rephrase, I didn't put that across very well.

I like to mod my games and I make a lot of mods for the like of DA, DA2, Witcher, Oblivion and the Fallout games.

I need to be able to alter files with no issues whatsoever.

Sometimes Steam has issues with certain ways a game is modded which is absolutely no use to me.

I know if I install the game myself with no 3rd party I have total control and the only issues i'll have are those that come from either the game itself or my own fuck ups.
I haven't really had any issues with that with Steam in a while. Directly modifying the .exe itself can be a problem, but that rarely ever is necessary, and people have even found ways around that for some games. When I was playing Oblivion earlier this year, my Steam install of it was over 20GB with all the mods I had, and it worked just fine. Everything explicitly includes support for the Steam version of games these days, like OBSE and Wrye Bash and whatnot, and it all just does what it's supposed to like with the retail version.

As far as I know, "normal" mods that don't do fancy things like load DLLs into the game don't really even have any way of telling the different versions apart for most games unless the Steam/retail/D2D/whichever ones explicitly have different content. I've screwed around a bit with DAO, Titan Quest, and Torchlight with no problems, too, among others. The biggest "conflict" I've had is forgetting to turn auto-updates off and having it overwrite my files when a patch came out, because I'm a dumbass, but YMMV. Heh.

I totally get not wanting to use it, which is fine with me, but it's not quite as dire as you make it sound.

Valve suffers the same complains when they enforce Steam install when they launch Half Life 2.
EA is doing exactly the same thing, so I don't see why people are complaining.

If you want to launch a digital platform, this is how you do it.
Valve did launch steam with Half Life 2, I don't see why EA can't do it with Battlefield 3

I dont know.. People should be whining about Punkbuster being in Battlefield 3. Not, not being able to get it on steam. SERIOUSLY:

Punkbuster does this.

-Makes you waste 20 seconds every time you login

-Has a bug making the game unplayable online for many people across the globe

-Kicks off people who didnt update correctly. Does not give info on how to update correctly. (Its a 2 in one issue)

-IS FRIKKIN CRAP. I swear, most hackers I saw had to be banned manually from the server. Punkbuster did nothing, NOTHIN.

Whine about the return of Punkbuster people. Its at least an enemy we might still prevent from comming back next battlefield.
Do not remind me of the royal freaking headache I had to go through to play 2142. One of my favorite FPS games, ruined because of that. The updates really are a pain.

OT: As for Origin, I think it's just the lack of convenience since eeeverything is on Steam now it seems. But it's not a huge deal. ....Until it mucks up. Which it will, because it's EA.
I doubt I'll get either MW3 OR BF3 though. Played both series long enough to see what they have to offer, and in my opinion, it's not as good as TF2.

Are people really that fanboyish for valve that they'll refuse to use any other software to play a (presumably) good game?
I think we already know the answer to that one.

OT: It's a bit of poor marketing on their part, but I don't think it'll be the big deal breaker that everyone's expecting. There will still be a good game in there worth getting, even if you do have to dig through EA's shit to get to it.

Do you think EA has caused BF3 to fail in its goal to beat MW3?
To me it seemed at the beginning that it might actually be possible, but then EA pulled out the gun when they didn't put steam on the list. Then the shot themselves in the foot when they announced that it wasn't going to be on steam, then they blew off their other foot when they said you HAD to use origin.

You probably think that the origin thing isn't that bad but the problem with this would be the piracy, because pirates are generally petty and will look for any excuse to illegally pirate a game even though they are obviously in the wrong. So, you don't want them to dislike you as a publisher. Although this probably won't be that bad because this is a largely multiplayer title. This along with the people who refuse to use origin because it's EA or whatever will probably stop it from getting close to COD's amount of players.

or at least on the PC.
I don't think they failed it, but they seriously seemed to not think about how this might impact it.

We really, really want to have a MW3 killer. But we won't put it on Steam and you need our own client to use it! And now that I've had that stroke of genius, I'm going to go dip my head in a bucket of ice water.

Yes, I'd not be willing to change services to origin just to play the game. I really hope this doesn't become a fad, making us choose one game service or another. I'd much rather stick with Steam.
Why, I ask? They are both on the same console. That's like saying, I'd much rather buy my game at Walmart. I'd hate to have to go to Best Buy to get a game. Wtf? It's not even like you have to drive anywhere.

OT: Here's the bottomline, people: BF3 looks gorgeous and is implementing some new and fresh gameplay mechanics that CoD never even thought of. For one, they are going to make it much harder for people to bunny hop around and quick-scope.
I don't want to have to juggle back and forth between game services, using Origin for battlefield and using steam for everything else. It's a matter of convinience more than anything else. I may buy the game for consoles though.

I used to play COD only, but got BF2 a couple of days ago. To be honest, I don't think it can match up against CoD.

The most anoying thing was that a player with a higher lvl had items to balance it in their favor( Snipe x12 mainly, or higher armor) that was th worst.

It's good also but, not too many online modes, classes, weapons. And maps WAY to big for the game except the squad matches.
compared to CoD's let?s give the winning team a helicopter? Also what where you playing it on wait im wasting my time here you only like the squad deathmatch.
I only played Conquest and Rush, I been playing for the last week, it's fun, but not as fun for me.

Also in CoD, i mostly play S&D.

Anyway, fanboy, nice seeing you mad by an opinion.

I don't care that I'll have to have it running to be honest, as long as it doesn't eat all my bandwidth. The only thing I've got against Origin is that the prices for their online store are absolutely horrendous, but retail solves that problem.
I just got Mirror's Edge for $5, in fact they regularly have sales going just like Steam. Steam's regular prices are horrendous too.

In which case you're juggling back and forth between console and PC. Smart.

Don't get me wrong, it a lot of fun, But i don't have a team so I mainly play by myself, when i get into a squad it becomes more enjoyable.

I might get BF3, only if i manage to get a team to play it.

Cod still is a lot of fun, but bored me.

How many games do you buy every day that you have to juggle between distribution services? You only need to open up the distribution service once to buy the game, then you can double click the icon on your desktop or start menu to play it.

I heard somewhere that Origin looks for pirated and cracked EA games on your PC, and should it find any, reports it and gets you a nice court case.

Now, dont be to quick to judge me when I say this, im not a pirate, but if thats true its a deal breaker. No Battlefield 3 for me then.
I heard somewhere that Origin steals your soul if you fall asleep at the computer! Now, I don't have a soul. I sold it for a donut when I was 9, but if that's true then no BF3 for me...

Nah the game looks great and Origin is not that bad at all. I plan on getting the PC version when I get a new rig. But most likely will get a PS3 copy to hold me over till then.

I'm still getting it, will be my first time using origin, and we'll see how good or bad it is... will probably buy it in boxed form from a store or amazon/play though. Will see what preorder deals are about closer to release.
