Has gaming ever taught you a new word or how to spell?

when I was little, I played Medal of Honor Allied Assault, CoD 2 (not MW2, 2) and they both taught me most of my knowledge of WWII, and in the fourth grade I did a project on hitler based on all the WWII games I played

So many I don't even remember. I just know that I learned most of my advanced vocabulary from gaming and other media.

And as LogicNProportion kindly pointed out earlier in this thread, he and I learned math from Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

Here's a few words.

Sepulcher. From World of Warcraft, Silverpine Forest. It showed up as a vocabulary word in English the very next goddamn day.

Cavalry. Apparently, 11th grade children don't know what this word means. I was in Honors U.S. History class today, and nobody other than the teacher and myself knew that it was a term for a unit of horsemen. I learned this from a game somewhere so long ago I don't remember what it was.

The fact that people in honors classes don't know what the word means saddens me.

I learned rendezvous from CoD. I learned so much from Pokemon. I started when I was about 5 or 6 and learned things like status, paralyse, accuracy etc and learned things like immunity and phoenix from final fantasy, which in turn lead me to learning bucket-loads about Norse mythology and how Fenrir was one of the sons of Loki and Odin was the god of poetry and war and literature and stuff and he had an 8 legged horse called Sleipnir and in the end there will be a big fight called Ragnarok which will flood the world and Fenrir will kill Odin but Thor and his hammer, Mjolnir (learned that from Halo) will survive and some others.

Synthesis, learned that from Kingdom Hearts.

Runescape taught me how metals were made by mining ores from rocks and smelting them together in furnaces to create liquid metals which had to be poured into molds.
Also learned what fletching was and why arrows have feathers on them from Runescape.

Oblivion taught me things like sanguine, which lead me to get extra marks in Spanish classes when I realised sanguine is taken from a Latin term and i=I was the only one who know what "sangre" meant.
It also taught me of the mortar & pestle and words like endurance.
Other rpgs taught me about wisdom, intelligence and constitution and playing online perfected my spelling and typing speed.

Also, lots of names of characters/locations in games are based off latin/greek words or famous people or things like sanguine, or the xenoforms from Alien vs. Predator which lead to me learning that xenos is greek for stranger and xenophobia is a fear of strangers/unfamiliar things (also foreigners.)

I learned musical terms like Bolero, Serenade (from Ocarina of Time), Rhapsody and Elegy from Kingdom Hearts.
Listening to VG music taught me about harpsichords and cellos and viola, violins etc before we were taught them in music classes.

<3 Learning <3 Videogames.

Games have taught me to spell words many times (spelling is unfortunately not one of my talents). None of them come to mind atm though, but i do remember some i learned the definition of by using the move in games, like deluge or eviscerate (i love that rogue).

I can type faster thanks to RuneScape. Most MMO's will do that.
This, but I was blown away by the WOW players in my class. 96 wpm are you kidding me!?!?

Also when my 7th grade science teacher asked the class to identify a pestle and mortar, I was the only one who knew, and I knew from potion making in Runescape.
I got mortar and pestle from TES.

I know games have taught me some words, but they are either too obscure (ie: Vargrian) or way at the back of my mind, so I won't list any. Other than Vargrian.
And what's that mean? Or is it a name of something in a game? (Cause that so does not count, =/)
Vargrians were an elite guard of Byzantine emperors. It was generally accepted that they wiped the floor, walls, and even ceiling with anyone they fought.

I would not say it taught me the words to begin with, but after my mild stroke...

Muds and Mush's retaught me.

Then again my game playing brought back full range of my right hand 70 percent temp paralyzed back in 6 times their normal projected.... go figure.

Not really. I'm pretty good with words, so I'm kind of familiar with most words in games.

However, playing Assassin's Creed 2 taught me a whole hell of a lot about the Italian Renaissance. I now recognize names like Rodrigo Borgia, Caterina Sforza, and others. And, I learned how to swear in Italian.

You 'pezzo de merda!'

Even after having quite WoW for 6 months, I can still keep a solid 50 WPM. That's the best typing training one can get.

EDIT: And I could do around 70 WPM while I was playing.

Fallout 3 taught me Charisma, too.

Exalted is a Tabletop game, but it taught me how to spell Autochthon. Which, aside from being a character/being/world, actually means something as its own word.

I'm sure there are others, but nothing comes immediately to mind.

-Portal taught me "aperture."

-Not the game itself, but the Dead Space tie-in novel taught me "chitinous."

-I didn't learn any words from the game as far as I can recall, but I did learn about string theory through Half-Life 2.

-Fallout 3 taught me what a VTOL is.

And that's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's more.

When I was young enough to still encounter spelling tests in school, Zelda helped me spell 'lantern' and Final Fantasy helped me spell 'effects'. I'm sure there are more instances of it too, especially in terms of learning new words.

Same here, although I learned my mad keyboard smashing skills from 4 years of EVE. I sometimes even surprise myself how fast I can type during tense moments or arguments :)

As for vocabulary, gaming ( and gaming forums ) have helped me immensely.
