Has nobody heard about the disasters in Japan?

I don't mean here on the Escapist of course, there are plenty of threads about it. But I have noticed something most unsettling.
Despite the fact that the Japanese PM has proclaimed these events the most destrutive since World War II (it takes a lot of natural disaster to reach that kind of level!) nobody in my flats seems to even be aware it's going on. One would think that a campus of web savvy students would notice these things unfolding, but nobody has mentioned it, and nobody I mention it to seems to know what I'm talking about...

Are we really so detached from the world?

Eh, I'm pretty sure that the people where I live know.
Especially since the normal sick jokes start going around, as always...
Might just be a location thing. And maybe the people as well.

Seriously? Everyone around here knows about it. Are you absolutely sure TV has been introduced where you live? It's like a box with a screen, you can't miss it.

...I don't know anyone who hasn't been following it on the news.

Of course, one of my best friends is a US Marine who's stationed over there, so...

This. There have been threads about it on every forum I visit, people talking about it in game, and it's all over CNN's homepage.

Here in Australia the quakes were plastered all over the weekend newspapers, so most people should know about it here. Although it didn't get anywhere near the coverage that the New Zealand earthquake got.

A lot of people where I'm from seem to have heard about it and a lot of them are concerned, and some others are making sick jokes about it. Isn't humanity just great?

Holy... I'm surprised.
Every single person I know knows about what is going on in Japan to some degree, even little kiddies.
Maybe all those people you are talking about really do not give a dang about the rest of the world, IMO.
It happens sometimes :3

If nothing else, people will really be hearing about it soon because of the nuclear reactors that are running hot.

My circle it is all over, even what funds have been set up to help.

Guess it's a matter of caring. I for one actually like helping a country that really does something for the world.

For some reason the combination of your avatar and post leads me to think you are trolling but very well disguised. If so well done

If not, seriously? It's all I have heard on the news and seen in the papers, there are threads on the escapist and pages on facebook. Not to mention countless threads on 4chan, tumblr and myspace along with the millions of videos on youtube.

It understandable, just because we use the internet alot doesn't mean we are up to date with the latest news (those people must not get out a lot to at least saw the newspaper cover and they don't own a tv) since it's most likely they don't visit news related websites.

A telegraph came to the president of Poland. Sadly we were to cheap to pay the cost of the full thing so we only got "Japan struck aw-".

We just figured out it was awe.

Unfortunately, that's just news coverage or the care of the individuals. Where I live people know, but it's kinda like "Good thing we're not them huh?" kinda attitude (which I can't decide if its more disgusting than ignorance).

Given I live in Fl, USA, where we get a few hurricanes every year to the point it kinda numbed us. Even Katrina several years ago we were like "haha!" Sooo in short... the people in my community are all jerk wads.....
