It does have the potential to possibly beat WoW, due to the star wars fan-base and that its doin' some new things and I can't wait to try it out.

I think a good parallel is in EQ's high point sony released a star wars MMO.
It was popular but did not kill EQ.. WOW did.
I think the new star wars MMO will be popular but it wont be a WoW killer..
Personally I am holding out hopes for secret world

no chance, wow has been out for so long that no other mmorpg would be able to top it. the loyal fanbase of wow is too great. although personally i told blizzard to get stuffed and am waiting for guild wars 2 which btw does anyone know the release date for?
Until WoW came out I would have said the same thing about EQ.. And before that ultima online..

Star Wars the Old Republic wins in a fair fight, but those bastards at Blizzard are known for cheating in the ring >:|

This kind of thread keeps on popping up every time a new MMO is ever talked about and really its kind of silly. Also every time the topic of can WoW be "killed" it is always the same answer NO.

For any future thread on this an answer can be summed up as is not going to kill WoW even though may have a large fan-base it cannot overtake WoW as it has to many extra years in development and to many players. Though can exist next to WoW and do well but will not kill WoW.

I personally am a Guild wars fan myself, and can't wait for GW2.

That said I think everyone on this site will admit to a strong love for Bioware, and most will admit to loving LucasArts.

So all they need tod o is make an Ok game, and it will do well. Partially because of who is making it. Partially because it is based on Star Wars, and partially because it is something new.
yeah I also think that people tend to forget the innovation GW2 is bringing in. its much more then TOR is bringing in.

SW:TOR is the warning.

Guild Wars 2 is incoming hammer.
I hope this is true. If it were up to me, then Guild Wars 2 would destroy all subscription MMO's
I tried Guild Wars, yes it wasn't subscription, but that didn't matter to me, because it sucked.

I hated that game, I'm happy to pay $15 a month for something worth my money, than a one time charge for something I hate.
yes but GW was moree of a Co-op RPG while GW2 is a full fledge MMORPG, with an ever changing world (literaly) http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dynamic-events/ your characters backstroy which isnt based on classes, http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/personal-stories/ your character personality changes http://www.arena.net/blog/personality-in-guild-wars-2 and effects how people look at you. No holy trinity, read more up at http://www.arena.net/blog/category/guild-wars-2

and http://www.arena.net/blog/guild-wars-2-design-manifesto (this one blew my mind...)

You have to realize, Blizzard has been doing RPGs for a looooooong time, and Lucas Arts is still new and rusty to the franchise. They're more used to making FPS, Flight Sims, and platformers, instead of RPGs. Though admittedly, Kyle Katarn made a pretty cool character to play as.
LucasArts isn't developing The Old Republic, BioWare is. Are you saying that BioWare has no experience in making RPGs? Have you even played Knights of the Old Republic? (Prequel to The Old Republic)

It could possibly, Starwars has a huge fan base. And this is Bioware we are talking about, when they make a game, it is sure to be good, but we will just have to wait and see.
Blizzard and BioWare are (the only?) two studios that seem to only release good games. I'm fairly certain that BioWare will continue this trend with SW:TOR

I'm certain that SW:TOR will be a success; not so certain that it will match or even threaten WoW.

you said it had a chance, and because of that it will now FAIL!

all joking aside I think it will have its fanbase plus a some odd thousand extra but its just not possible to topple something that has been built as sturdy as WoW.

I doubt it... the only MMO I considered playing was Fallen Earth, and after trying it the controls were so bad that I couldn't play more than 20 minutes...

The new Star Wars MMO looks great, but so many people are already so invested in WoW. At this point in time, I don't think there's going to be a "WoW killer." Why would millions of people give up something they've already invested so much time and money in? Plus, WoW players are probably already with their WoW community. It'll take something huge to knock WoW off its throne, and I doubt this is it.

I'm going to give the answer I give to everyone else who says something will kill WoW, or be better than it. No...

Not because the game that's coming out isn't good, or that WoW is simply to awesome. No, none of that is the reason. The reason is that WoW has been building its fanbase since 1994 when Warcraft: Orcs and Humans was released.

Warcraft has an incredibly rich lore, and depsite popular belief, they have actually managed to keep it fairly stable without totally screwing everything up (some inconsistencies, but most of the speculation on a character's personality not allowing them to turn evil is just them wanting their favorite to be the good guy).

Nothing that isn't WoW will kill WoW. What this basically means is that WoW won't be killed by another game taking away its fan base, it will be killed by stagnation, because once it grows big enough people will start getting bored en masse. However, I believe that as long as the servers remain open, they will always have at least 1 million subscribers, because there is always someone who loves it enough to stay, even when everyone else leaves (note, I personally love WoW, but I get bored and stop renewing my subscription when I want a break).

It'll certainly dominate on this here forum, but no, SWTOR won't kill WoW in general, or even beat it. There are so many reasons why, not least of all the fact that MMO fans are spoiled these days due to WoW's massive amount of polish and all MMO gamers seem to expect that level of polish from any new MMO. Ridiculous, of course. Does nobody remember what WoW was like when it started? I sure do.

I know this is a repeat topic because I have asked this before:

Can someone define what would constitute "killing" WoW?

As in cause all of the WoW player-base to move to SW:OR?

No, no it won't. Some people like WoW for what it is and the franchise. Not everyone likes Star Wars (gasp! I know!). Many will probably play both.

As in take a significant chunk away and maybe match it?

Possible, if unlikely, for the same reasons.

Do very well on its own? Maybe rivaling WoW, without doing a whole lot of damage to it?

Yes, I think Star Wars and KOTOR have a strong enough following; and the development team behind it is top-notch. It has a great deal of potential.

Time will tell, however.

Nope, it's an easy game to play, it's really casual.

Supposedly they are going to make it require more skill to raid, but when people complain about that they will change it back.

If The new Warhammer MMO doesnt do well... I think I'm just going to give up on life.

I tried giving the warhammer online thing a try, but its so unbalanced and broken, I just cant do it.

*Sigh*

Games don't "beat" other games. There will always be some fundamental difference that separates the two.

There will always be the MMO monster we know as Blizzard and they will continue to pump money into WoW to make it more into what their players want.

SW:TOR will be just another MMORPG that will try to topple the tremendous fan base. Will it succeed? No one knows, but it certainly won't be as easy as "thiz 1 iz beetters than that 1!!!1".
