...Its more of KoToR on the PC....with ships....and PvP
At this realization a few months back... I....

Seriously... I don't care if it's an MMO... IT'S... KOTOR.

Oh, and the PC version of the original KotOR is the definitive one, not the console version. Seriously, KotOR is what the main word is here, not MMO.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Old_Republic

How many times do I count the word: Massively multiplayer online role-playing game

Wait a Second......"each class will support on-the-fly customization that will allow any class to fill any role within a party, eliminating the need to spam channels in search of a specific class needed to fill a role within a group, which can delay or outright stop parties from completing group quests" -Holy Freakin Jesus-

I dont know what about all the talk about NPCs and that such....it doesnt make much sense TBH
No, you're not getting me well here.

The reason I will buy and subscribe to this game is due to the fact that this is.

MOAR KOTOR

I've waited 7 years for BioWare to make a new KotOR... And it's finally coming.
Yes it is KotOR but.....How can they play the MMO Card? I enjoyed KotOR (2 was crap and I dont care if you said it was made daily into bread and fed to the gods...) but.....I want to see more...All Ive seen is Classes and Planets and Ive never seen an MMO style to it. Will it be like Guild Wars? Will you and I be able to see each other? Fight in some random hallway? etc etc

Honestly, I don't think anything less than World of StarCraft has the power to stop the beast that WoW has become.
As hard as it would be to make a WoS, it would only be more buckets of $$$ on the official Blizzard money mountain

Bioware certainly has a great array of games and achievements under their belt and while they are great at making single player RPGs we have yet to see their attempt at a MMO. While I LOVE the KotOR games and am waiting eagerly to get my hands upon TOR I highly doubt that it will beat WoW.

I am not in anyway saying this because I am a fan boy of Blizzard or WoW. I still firmly believe that the only thing that will kill WoW is WoW itself. When people get tired of WoW is when it will "die". Blizzard has such a firm hold on the MMO community right now that it will be hard to pull people away from it unless something truly dramatic catches their attentions. While Star Wars has a very large fan base it isn't appealing to everyone.

All in all TOR will be good, Bioware is always good at what they do and have quality products but Blizzard has the advantage of time, experience in the MMO market and a large fanbase already addicted.

Unfortunately, WoW seems to be unstoppable. I feel almost every other MMO out there is superior (except for Runescape...), and yet WoW continues to beat the competition. SWG pre-CU and even now is better, I find Lord of the Rings Online better, and neither of those come close to WoW's success. I honestly do not know what it is, and even though The Old Republic is set to be better, you just cannot kill the queen with all the millions of bees protecting it.

I don't see why people care at all, it's a game, if you don't like it, don't play it.

I am really looking forward to The Old Republic since I now have a laptop that can run Crysis. My old Toshiba would chug and lag and crash playing Half Life 2. I have loved bothe of the Old Republic games and hearing that this MMO would be double the length of both Old Republic games put together I was like Hell Yeah!!

I think WoW will alienate a sizeable chunk of it's player base with the next expansion, weakening it enough to allow for a competitor to slip in. That's my prediction anyway. (besides, alot of the players I know on there are getting kind of tired of it)

I dont think its possible for any game to kill WoW for a long time. I believe that will only be possible if WoW gets weak by itself, after years of nothing good coming on newer expansions.

You have to realize, Blizzard has been doing RPGs for a looooooong time, and Lucas Arts is still new and rusty to the franchise. They're more used to making FPS, Flight Sims, and platformers, instead of RPGs. Though admittedly, Kyle Katarn made a pretty cool character to play as.
LucasArts isn't developing The Old Republic, BioWare is. Are you saying that BioWare has no experience in making RPGs? Have you even played Knights of the Old Republic? (Prequel to The Old Republic)
Yes, I have played both of the KOTOR games, and they were both unbelievably awesome. I understand that Bioware is making the game, it's just that Lucas Arts is the holder of the franchise (if I remember correctly), and they will be the ones who get to dictate how the universe is used.

I like the fact it's going to take place in the KOTOR realm, as those were two very good RPGs...but I just can't see them really working in an online setting. Ah well, I suppose I'll just have to wait and see, it's all I can do, really. I won't buy it though, I've had my fill of MMO's.

Really I am impressed with the number of people who are giving WoW such credit. I guess as it relates to the OP No ToR will not "kill" WoW, much like Wow didnt kill Everquest. Truthfully as long as there are Koreans, World of Warcraft will never die.

But let us be realistic, The impact ToR has on WoW WILL LIKELY be similar to the Impact WoW had on EQ. This is obviously provided that ToR is good and actually delivers on the promises Bioware has been making. The reason is that if the Story pillar plays out the way Bioware has been hyping it, It will be a keystone convention for MMOs across the board that basically will practically become prerequisite for new MMOs to have in order to compete.

WoW will in turn have to compete with that and due to the limitations of the engine, unless they basically plan to completely recode and rebuild the game from practically the ground up it will always be lagging behind the curve.

And when presented with a game that has all the same polish and features WoW has, Plus has an added dynamic that WoW doesnt, people will find it harder to go back to WoW long term after the novelty of the new next big thing wears off.

Lets be honest (at least more honest than blizzard is about their subscription numbers) You will see an initial dropoff in WoW subscriptions after ToR for the first 1-3 months. In that time, the novelty will wear off for the bleeding edgers. There will then be a return influx to WoW. Even with an insane overestimate, just for argument sake say ToR eats away at 50% of WoWs subscription base, ANY MMO with 5 million subscribers is extremely sucessful because for most MMOs, they can exist fairly comfortable with a subscription base of 200,000 or more.

So is anything going to kill WoW? Only Blizzard will do that. Is ToR going to take a large bite out of the WoW subscription base? Not really considering that the star wars fanbase will likely be tied to the more English speaking markets, and the bulk of WoWs subscriptions are still based in the Asian markets. Will ToR take a large bite out of the profits that Blizzard sees from the US.. You better believe it will.

Fact is WoW will be around for many years to come. Just look at the case example of Everquest. In its heyday, it had half a million subs. In the 6 plus years since its heyday its population has been cut down to 2/5ths what it once was, yet it is still trudging along. Even if WoW does start to take a downturn, its going to still be seen as profitable for many years to come. It simply wont die, but it will get wounded from ToR, and perhaps DCUO for the ENG market, and a few other upcoming MMOs will help to further chip away at the immovable object.

This has been said every time a new MMO comes out... It's never happened. Age of Conan, Warhammer, Aion, a few even said LOTRO. Look at the large fan base behind Tolkien. Yet that game has only a fraction the subscribers that WoW does.

Nothing will ever kill or beat WoW except WoW.

That means that it will only die if it becomes boring to the majority of players, or Blizzard changes something drastically. Or if they release WoW 2.

4.0 is essentially rebuilding the entire game graphically, and content wise as well, bringing it up to speed with WoTLk which looks fairly good. So instead of treating to crappy computers 5 years ago it will be catering to crappy computers of 2010. Remember a huge selling point of WoW is that older computers can play it on its low settings.

The entire old world is literally being thrown out and replaced with the new one. That's the point of 4.0. To replace the game without replacing the game.

I don't think anything can remove WoW as top mmo, ever mmo released since WoW has been it's supposed match and they've all failed and been pushed aside. SWTOR is no different.

New Players wanting to get into WoW need the original game plus...3 expansions now...4? I can't even remember. Plus the monthly fee

New Players wanting to get into Old Republic only need to buy one game....plus the monthly fee. Still it's newer, has a great universe to build on and is markedly easier to get into, plus everyone's on square one with the new game, instead of having tons of people who have already been playing for years.

I think with SW:TOR as well as Guild Wars 2 on the way, I don't think WoW will necessarily 'die' but I think it's population will take a massive nose dive

Sadly, no. WoW cannot be taken down as MMO king. The concept of the "WoW-killer" is ridiculous. IF anything, people will just play both games.
