At this realization a few months back... I....

Seriously... I don't care if it's an MMO... IT'S... KOTOR.

Oh, and the PC version of the original KotOR is the definitive one, not the console version. Seriously, KotOR is what the main word is here, not MMO.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Old_Republic

How many times do I count the word: Massively multiplayer online role-playing game

Wait a Second......"each class will support on-the-fly customization that will allow any class to fill any role within a party, eliminating the need to spam channels in search of a specific class needed to fill a role within a group, which can delay or outright stop parties from completing group quests" -Holy Freakin Jesus-

I dont know what about all the talk about NPCs and that such....it doesnt make much sense TBH
No, you're not getting me well here.

The reason I will buy and subscribe to this game is due to the fact that this is.

MOAR KOTOR

I've waited 7 years for BioWare to make a new KotOR... And it's finally coming.

you sir are an idiot, why?
for this very quote

"its more of KoToR on the PC"

you do realize KoToR was developed for the pc first and not the xbox right? Apparently not. On the pc, for example , you get better graphics and new areas to go into, look it up, also I own the game for pc... as well as the second one.

"the state WoW is in"
"story-driven MMO is so different"
"WoW is just dry and bland and this and that"

Really, people, I know WoW isn't popular-- personally, I'm a devotee of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, and have been for over a year now, coming off 4 years of WoW-- only in word-of-mouth because of this, that, and the other thing. But honestly, quit deluding yourselves. Nothing has debunked WoW yet, and given the state of the majority of gamers nowadays, I highly doubt something that forces wordiness down players' throats (as opposed to WoW's click-click-done style) is going to appeal to everyone but, as has been repeated numerous times, a niche.

WoW's not a good game when compared to others. I won't deny this. What it is, however, is accessible and popular. Friends play it. Friends of friends play it. Getting into the swing of WoW is so easy, and nowadays, you can tank most anything but a raid half-asleep if you've been playing more than four months. With a friend who's in-game-savvy, twenty minutes of tweaking can mod your interface to calculate and crunch everything for you, further reducing the technical time needed, allowing you more hack-and-slash action to keep the wordy-woes away from you. Why do RPGs fall flat? People can't stand sitting there and listening to that 'boring drivel.' They need something that keeps moving, moving, moving, in gameplay and in story. Most people don't even care about a story, and in a player-based environment, honestly, only the devoted fans will care. And I'm sure everyone here is a devoted fan of one failing niche or another... be that DDO or WAR or maybe they clung to Galaxies. I don't know.

I'm not trying to be a jerk. Honestly, I hate WoW and I'd love to see it topple, because it might encourage other MMOs to be a little more conservative and offer, say, 14-day trials right on launch so players don't need to subscribe and find out they've blown 80$. They don't have that leisure, because 14 days is enough for 70% of a prospective population to decide WoW was better, leaving the last 30% to disperse this way and that. It almost happened to WAR; I was around when they went from some 20 servers or within that range to FOUR. Things do not kill WoW. No, the MMO community is a forest. Everything is frolicking animals. There are a few grizzlies in there, too, that eat the animals.

And then WoW is the giant robot-bear that has laser-eyes, jetpacks and rocket fists, a flamethrower in its mouth and a railgun somewhere in the pelvic region. Things do not kill WoW; WoW simply laughs as everything scatters before it, because it is so hard-cemented into the MMO community that not only have they already roped a rough 40% as devoted players, they've got another 40% on such tight leashes that even if they go to other MMOs, they will still subscribe to WoW.

You wanna refute me, then please, do so with some numbers and facts. WoW's successful, and moreso than others, or it wouldn't be on Expansion #3 with the highest grossing subscriber count out of all MMOs, probably topping on the charts with PSN and XBL to make things worse, and that's completely self-evident. A new MMO has a chance at being successful. It does not have a chance to 'kill WoW,' and when WoW remains as steadfast as ever in the face of franchises that existed ~25 years prior to it, I hope you'll remember that being a fanboy of any one franchise does not mean that an MMO heralding its name will topple WoW.

Most WoW players don't even know WoW lore, to be frank. They just play the game. If 'story-driven' is a strong argument FOR the SW MMO, you might want to consider the gaming community of today. If the story isn't brief and point-form, it's probably going to get glossed over.

I think that if the Old Republic is good enough, over time people will move from WoW to SWTOR.
But I don't think theres gonna be a huge migration as soon as the game comes out.

I don't think The Old Republic will "kill" I think it will take a big leap at the front to maybe 25% of the number of players WoW has, then slowly grow while WoW slowly shrinks.

Will it overtake it eventually? Maybe.

I tried Guild Wars, yes it wasn't subscription, but that didn't matter to me, because it sucked.

I hated that game, I'm happy to pay $15 a month for something worth my money, than a one time charge for something I hate.

WoW has got nothing to fear. SW:TOR looks pretty awesome but as a WoW player I just can't justify giving up what I have worked so hard on for something else. Especially with Cataclysm on the horizon. The only thing I can see that may cause a hit to WoW is Diablo III. I know a lot of people who started playing WoW (myself included) just for something to do until D3 gets released.

It could possibly, Starwars has a huge fan base. And this is Bioware we are talking about, when they make a game, it is sure to be good, but we will just have to wait and see.

No. I have no doubt SWTOR will be a huge success, but it will not take World of Warcraft down.

Rival it? Maybe... maybe....

As much as I'd like to see SW:TOR become a serious contender to WoW (if only for my own amusement as the whole situation develops), I seriously doubt it'll happen - WoW has had 10 years to establish its loyal fanbase, who are unlikely to a) play 2 MMO's at once and b) unlike to abandon their friend's and switch games.

Remember, many of the people in WoW would have been developing their characters for years - to switch to another MMO would mean starting from scratch.

Its very unlikely that WoW players will split from one another to play another game (unless they switch en masse, e.g. a whole clan decides to switch together), so SW:TOR will need to establish its own fanbase, without drawing from the WoW crowd - if it does become successful, chances are its a new crowd of gamers, rather than making any significant dent in WoW 12-13 million user base.

well a ton of women play wow, a ton of women are nuts over farmville.

not many women are into scifi period, proably a bit over the norm are somewhat into star wars, and a few beyond that might be pretty huge bioware fans.

i am sure after, what is it now 7 years? wow has been running if a good game comes out a good chunk of people would be willing to make the jump expansions or not, it is just a question of if tor or any game will hold them for the long haul or will they grow tired of it and go back to their level 100 toons with pink gear in wow or whatever it ends up being as blizzard pushes expansions about the time tor and guild wars 2 drops in an effort to keep hold of players that might jump ship.

will tor or gw2 kill wow? probably not but i am willing to bet their sub numbers and probably a few other games will see a drop in subs about the time those games come out, and if they are as good in practice as they seem to be on paper word of mouth carries a lot of weight, that helped wow gain players as people told other people about this game they have to try.

build a better game and you can kill wow, but it will not happen day one i may not even happen for 2 or 3 more years after the great wow killer comes out there is a limit for any game no matter how good or just plain popular it is before people want something different.

game designers need to relinquish 'beating wow' as a phrase and start asking 'how do we make this more fun and tone down on the assholedness of our players?'

I'm pumped to see what Star Wars will do, but I'm a Guild Wars guy. And what the sequel is toting keeps me coming back to their website every few days for updates.

Plus, I'm cheap and eff paying fees for games I bought (sans dlc).

It wont happen.

WoW is the number one right now for a reason. Whether you like it or not, they've had a long run and generally know what works and what doesn't. Just about every single MMO that's been released has been slated to be "the WoW killer", and let's remember... SWtOR will be brand new, with lots of new issues, kinks, and general problems that WoW will already have had years to sort out.

It'll probably do well... But it wont stop WoW.

Now, we all know how big World of Warcraft has become, and no other game has reached the population to create the worlds first online superpower besides it. But the new Star Wars: The Old Republic, seems to me like the kind of game that could be a competitor. It might work due to the huge Star Wars fan base, but would it have enough snuff to get a massive amount of players, or would it fail in the competition just like so many other games have?
I definitely think it will compete. I mean if you take china out of the equation WoW's subscriber numbers drop by half so ya. Plus you have Bioware making it and i dont think they've ever made a horrible game. Should be interesting.. Iknwo i'll be playing it!

i very much doubt World of failcraft is going to notice ST:TOR, why?

its just to big, its gotta like what? 11 million people playing it, or least subscribed to it, YEARS of content, and such

ST: TOR has the fan base to be sure, but will lack the content.

kinda like how Champions Online is inferior to City of Heroes. Yeah CO dose a few things right but theres not much there, and little if any deviation in the path you take from lvl 1 (or lvl 5 if you skipped the tutorial) to lvl 40, i think is there cap.

where as CoH has hundreds of different paths to take from 1 to 50, since its got YEARS behind it, its got its fan base, and as stated here
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/1906-The-Future-of-MMOs

most of us only play ONE MMO, like, EVER, so ST: TOR is fighting that to, i know i'm not leaving CoH for WoW or ST:TOR

that's not even taking into account the community's, so if ST:TOR wants to de-throne WoW its got a pretty good uphill battle.

i wish it the best of luck though
