Can't believe no one mentioned Uncharted 2. Had no initial interest in the first, but after the glowing reviews of the sequel, picked up Among Thieves, and THEN went back to the first.
showing my age, but here we go.
Resident Evil 2 before 1.
Think about this for a second. At the time, I thought Resident Evil 2 was such a visual Juggernaut that looking at one made me throw the controller down in digust.

KotOR 2 before KotOR 1, simply because i like the higher level cap and the addition of prestige classes. ultimately, though, i liked the games about equally well.
also, for all the people who played Fallout 3 before 1 or 2, especially if they still haven't played 1 or 2, i wanna cry
granted, the gameplay is pretty creaky, especially in 1, but the story in 1 is so damn good, and in 2 the gameplay was improved tremendously.
same goes for the old Baldur's Gate games, they're just too well written to let crusty mechanics turn you off of them :/

Final Fantasy X-2 before Final Fantasy X and the others. I actually thought for over a year that X-2 was more fun when compared to the rest...until I played VII and IX.
I played halo 3 first, then halo 2, and finally halo 1.
I wasn't bothered in the least by the story, as I simply rearranged it. Although it was a little bothersome, as obviously each successive games goal was to improve upon the last; generally speaking, making each game played, worse than the last.
May I point out, that by contrast, halo 1 warthogs control like rubber blocks; taking an excessive amount of time to even begin to move as well.

Red Alert 2 before the first one, liked it better mostly because the gameplay and the humor which the first one lacked.
Fallout 3 before all the others, and I have not yet finished the others, they are great but I just think fallout 3 is better. Better graphics and better gameplay and also I don't like turn bsed combat.
Half-Life 2 before the original, original may have been great for it's tme but the phisics really suck now and the story is a bit boring, actual gameplay is still great though.

Chrono Cross before Chrono Trigger. I didn't even know the latter existed for a while.
And guys. Final Fantasy doesn't count. They aren't sequels (unless you played FFX-2 before FFX or played that FFXII ds game before the ps2 game I guess). Almost /no one/ who plays FF games started with #1.

I will ONLY if the stories have NOTHING in common. Otherwise I have to play, watch, read, etc in order.
Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Resident Evil 4, Call of Duty 4, and God of War: Chains of Olympus, if that counts.
