Have you ever played sequels before their predecessors?

I played Paper Mario 2 (Thousand year door) before Paper Mario original. Loved both of them but still hate the Wii version.

Fallout 3, as I have not played any of the earlier ones.
Persona 3 (currently playing Persona 4), and I doubt I'll go back to Persona 1 and 2, simply because they're impossible to aquire around here...
Red Dead Redemption (I never did play Red Dead Revolver...)
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc.
Final Fantasy, started with IX, then X and X-2, VII, and finally XIII...
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2.
Metal Gear Solid 3 (it was my first MGS game, which then triggered my "must play 'em all" mindset)
Tom Clancys Rainbow Six: Vegas 2.
Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood (I've played, and love, the series so far, and I'm still hoping for a fourth one, with the ending in BiA: Hell's Highway hinting at a place with snow (Battle of the Bulge perhaps?)

Hmm... there's probably some more, but I can't remember 'em at this moment...

Yup, this one goes for me.

Oh, also the pokémon games... the first I played was Saphire.

Not an actual sequel, but... Unreal Tournament before Unreal.

...that's it... well, aside from the odd (typically American) order in which I played the Final Fantasy series:
I, IV, VI, VII, VIII, V, II, IX, III, X.

I played Mass Effect 2 at a friends house. Was halfway through Freedom's Progress when I stopped. I like it, so I went and bought ME1 and 2. Unfortunately, the opening cutscene of ME2 sortof ruins the story of ME1.

This. Pretty much the main one I can think of. Oh, and Half Life 2 (since the first isn't available on Mac). Team Fortress 2 as well.

Morrowind*
Fallout 3*
Mario World (Took 3-year-old me a while to adjust to not having Yoshi)
Final Fantasy 7 (So few of the games are direct sequels that it didn't affect anything)
Warcraft II*
Theif: Deadly Shadows*
Link to the Past (Makes it hard to adjust to Zelda 1 having very little to point you in the right direction...or Zelda 2 being a platformer 0_o)
Half Life 2*
Team Fortress 2*
Sonic 3 (took a while to get used to mechanics that were introduced later)
Kirby Super Star*
Metal Gear Solid*
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow*
Super Metroid*
Megaman 9*

*Haven't played anything earlier in the series

I played the remake for the PSP and I didn't have a problem with the characters and found Mark to be fairly funny. The game play is where I had a problem, it was clunky and tedious. Plus the encounter rate was insane.

Oh, I thought you managed to play the mythical PS1 version. Where Mark looked like this:

I like to imagine that the english translation came after a night of binge drinking and watching some black comedians.

It would be hilarious if they managed to make that work, though.

to my shame i played baldurs gate 2 before the first game.... the intro to the second game ruins the main story line to the first :(
damn my foolishness.

However, it forced me to stop and begin from scratch in the first game.

I also played Mafia II and still havent played the first one,
I played might and magic VIII, then VII then VI and i can never decide which is the superior game.....

Might and Magic VIII is slightly worse than the others.... but i have so much nostalgia for it cus tis the first Might and Magic game i played.

Even if I may run into the danger of dating myself (and kinda feeling very old now looking at those other entries), in no particular order and of the top of my head the games I played before their predecessors:

Dune 2 (kinda does not really count, as the first one was a very different game: Adventure->RTS)
Zelda 2 (although I have to admit I started falling in love with the series only after A Link to the Past)
TIE Fighter(The DOS-era game, one of the few where I really enjoyed playing the "bad" guys)
Warcraft 2 (after that, I played all Blizzard Games chronologically)
Wing Commander: Privateer (which technically is a spin-off, but that was my first game of the Wing Commander series)
Turrican 2 (I am not entirely sure about this one, I might have started with the first one after all)
Duke Nukem 3D (at least I think so. Were the predecessor not 2D-sidescroll games? I am not sure here either)

There are even more hazy ones, like SimCity (where I might have played 2000 slightly before the original) and Metal Gear Solid (if you take Metal Gear into account). I also have trouble ordering the Final Fantasy games, as I definitely did not start with the first one, but am not sure where I actually started. The picture gets clearer with VII and beyond (as for many people, I guess) and the harmonized launches and titles across the world.

Some of the more popular ones mentioned here do not count for me, for example Fallout (played those) or Call of Duty (I played the first ones briefly but have actually kinda lost interest in most FPS games and so did not play the more recent ones). Otherwise, one of the few games from more recent memory where I skipped the predecessor (in contrast to skipping the entire series until now, there are lots of those :p), I think the only one coming to mind right now is Left 4 Dead 2. Odd, isn´t it?
