Have you ever played sequels before their predecessors?

I played Oblivion before Morrowind. But I still think that Morrowind is better....

I played Fallout 3 before any of the others. My first Call of Duty was 3 and I still haven't played 1 or 2. I've never played Age of Empires I but I've played a ton of AOEII.

In terms of games with a continuing storyline though, no I have not. I did play about 30 minutes of God of War 3 before I played 1 and 2 but then I got all three and played them in order.

I played Sly Raccoon 2 before the 1st one, basically because I'd never heard of the series until I played the demo of the 2nd one included with Ratchet and Clank 3.

assassins creed 2 and I don't plan on playing 1. All I ever hear is how repetitive it is, and the story easy enough to gather from the second so apart from playing trough altairs story don't feel like ive missed much.

I too played fallout 3 and oblivion before their predecessors, which only made me want to play the other installments more but just have not gotten around to it.

Chrono Cross before Trigger. Gave it 15 hours before I tossed it away forever. The PS1 port had HORRID load times for the menus. I own the DS port, haven't gotten around to playing it.

Half Life 2 before Half Life 1. Couldn't finish 1. The game just bored me.

Legend of Mana before Secret of Mana.

Final Fantasy, I started with 8.

Crash Bandicoot 2 before Crash 1.

Fallout 3 before 1 and 2. And I didn't bother playing 1 and 2 for more than 10 minutes before I realized it was too archaic game-play wise for my tastes. Same reason I gave up on Baldur's Gate 1 + 2 within an hour.

Call of Duty 2. Never played 1, outside of the demo of the HD port.

Persona 4 before Persona 3 and Persona 1.

Oblivion before Morrowind. Never touched Daggerfall. Tried Arena, but I hate DOS Box.

And many more that I likely forgot.

AC: Brotherhood comes to mind.

Wouldn't probably try AC 2 seeing as everyone calls Brotherhood 'AC 2 but slightly better.' Plus Brotherhood has multiplayer.

Not direct sequels, no.

If there's any real narrative continuity involved (Uncharted, Mass Effect, etc.), then I'll play them in order, and I don't understand people who don't.

If they're typically stand-alones (Fallout 3, Final Fantasy games, etc.) then I'll play them in whatever order.

Well, I guess it will be Mass Effect 2 for me, since I'm a PS3 owner and upgrading my PC for gaming isn't in the cards. This is one of the very few times I regret not getting a 360.

I did play God of War 2 before the first one, but did go back and play GoW 1. And the order I played the Phantasy Star games in was III, II, IV and I.
