Not so much a boss battle but you remember that game in Final Fantasy X that was kind alike underwater basketball? Remember that pro team that you're supposed to lose to? Yeah, I just barely beat them
yeah, i managed to beat the Goers, too. blitzball was actually my favorite thing in that whole game (aside from Rikku), so much so that i never actually completed the main storyline, just kept playing blitzball forever.
also, i'm pretty sure my old roommate actually managed to beat Midgardsormer (the first time) in FFVII. took him like 10 hours of retrys, though.

Once or twice, I think.

The only one that really leaps to mind is the big nasty T-Rex thing in Final Fantasy 8 that makes Quistis wail like a small child to run away when you first run into it.

Does beating Lavos (the first time you see him during 12000 B.C) and the first Golem in Chrono Trigger during New Game+ count?

Leon in Kingdom Hearts isn't a "supposed to lose" fight. It's actually not that difficult. Just because the game doesn't end after you lose something doesn't make it a "supposed to lose" battle.

I did that once during Gerald's campaign in Kingdom Under Fire the Crusaders, I killed Reignier during the fifth mission I think. It may have been a supposed to lose fight but if you handle it correctly he's a pushover. :p

That fight's difficulty depends on whether or not you perfect the Jecht Shot in practice. If you do, they're near-impossible. If you don't, they're pushovers.
Wait, if you have the jecht shot they are hard? What?

Jecht shot is two guaranteed goals if used correctly - I only lost that match without the jecht shot and have never lost with it.

And boss fights wise I can't really think of any

I wouldn't say it really counts as a supposed-to-lose in the traditional sense, but I barely survived the Cauthrien fight in Dragon Age, not knowing I'd wind up skipping a bit of the game in doing so. I was stuck with just Morrigan by the time I realised how screwed I was and had to keep casting Horror and the like to keep the majority of the enemies at bay.

An actual supposed-to-lose fight I won was the dream fight against the "stranger" and his black dragon in Jade Cocoon. I used cheat codes, mind you, but there literally was no other way of doing it. I was a kid and thought something cool might happen if I won... Over an hour later, I was disappointed.

Like many of the replies here, I have and it can be frustrating or invigorating - depending on if the developers ever considered the remote possibility of a player win and provided some kind of reward or way to move forward without losing.

The best use of a "you cannot win" battle I have seen in plot structure is the end of Crisis Core for the PSP - it was heart rending for me, even though I knew - like I imagine most people who played FF7 or knew anything about the FF7 plot at all - that I could not leave that battle alive.
This for sure.

Mine was beating Balio and Sunder in Breath of Fire 3, not the first time they show up, I think their Hp is infinite there, (These guys are the kings of the "supposed to lose" fight) but in the castle dungeon when they try and kidnap Nina. I don't remember if you got anything for beating them though.

I was pretty impressed with myself the first time I cleared Fort Ludios.

Likewise the first time I got through the Castle and found the wishing wand.

But I died both games, I think to Jubilex once, something stupid the other time.

So back in the days of Everquest we had a couple impossible to win fights that were won.

One was the sleeper. The sleeper was this dragon that when awakened would go on a rampage through a couple zones, and then despawn. Once a guild woke up the sleeper he was gone forever. One server(Rallos Zek) kept it's sleeper sleeping until several guilds got together to kill him. They had a team of clerics with items that let them resurrect an unlimited amount of times. Since the sleeper could one shot any player they buried him in bodies, and were resurrecting players faster than he could kill them. The fight lasted longer than maximum fight time(hours and hours) and the sleeper despawned. The devs however respawned him for a second try and the combined guilds were able to kill the sleeper. There were no items or rewards.

The other was when the devs ran some events for the take over of the troll city by the new player race of frogloks. "Unbeatable" frogloks were being played by the devs cleansing grobb of trolls. Well on some servers the troll players were able to kill the devs and defend the city, but the trolls still 'lost' the city when the patch came. It was pretty lame.

Why are people saying you're supposed to lose the Blitzball game in FFX? It's hard, yeah, but very winnable. The scene with Wakka afterwards even changes to him holding the trophy if you won. The outcome doesn't affect the story beyond that, though, so it doesn't matter much if you win or not.

Yeah i have, they are only apparent in RPGs especially JRPGS in my experience.

Besides the KH1 fights, i cannot remember the other few that i won ingame but then "lose" in the following cutscene.

I want to say FFX but i could be wrong.

In Chrono Trigger, when you first come face-to-face with Lavos, he does his "Destruction rains from the heavens" attack, which is supposed to K.O. your party in one turn. On a New Game +, if your stats are high enough, you can survive the attack and defeat Lavos right there.
This is intentional, as it provides one of the many separate endings of the game.
I know, but it still counts! Sort of...

Not really...

I know this question may sound stupid to some, but I bring it up because in some games you actually can win a 'supposed to lose fight'. Usually however it ends up with your character losing anyway. Personally I have won two of said fights in games, one in Kingdom Hearts and another in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai. How about you, my fellow escapists?
My favorite one was the Genkai v. Younger Toguro in Dark Tournament. That was hard, especially on dark tournament +. But, I did it, after a couple dozen times at least, and all I got was a little blurb saying Genkai couldn't go on and died.

And you get nothing for it. Seemed like an awesome use of my time.

Chrono Trigger vs the Golem summoned by Dalton at Zeal comes to mind (when you're first imprisoned)

Well I didn't win the match because it was impossible but in Smackdown vs. Raw 2010(?I think it was '010) there is 1 fight where someone interupts your match but I held him off (read:beat him with a chair) for like 20 minutes but I stopped because it got boring.

Done quite a few in jrpgs. Some examples which spring to mind are Kratos in ToS and Asch in TotA. Also that big creature thing in the swamp in TotA when you're first in the swamp, you're meant to run away and come back and kill it later if you wish, but I didn't listen. Was so pissed off I didn't get any xp for killing that. Apparently you only got xp if you killed it after leaving the area and re-entering.

Did he game still have you lose?

I don't even remember how I fared against them. Although I would guess I lost because I know I didn't get the Jecht Shot.
