The only one I can think of would be in Dragon Age after you rescue the Queen and you are ambushed by some lady with a ton of soldiers. Anyway I blew my cover all of my party died and I was using up my Health Potions like there was no tomorrow somehow I ended up winning I have no idea how I did it, according to the story if you win you're still treated as if you were captured and shipped off to Fort Drakon.

New Vegas, level 4 character.
Went into Quarry Junction.
Came out of Quarry Junction, with deathclaw innards covering everything left and right.

Suikoden on the psx. An amazing rpg that pisses on anything Sqeenix has put out. At one point a starting party member (I think there were 100 charecters to choose from) has a 1 on 1 duel with his father that is scripted for him to lose.

The guy is way over powered and in the days before gamefaqs etc. you could just accept it was unwinnable. I grinded him up to become an absolute beast and won the fight which can lead to a different story path.

Leon in Kh1 is the only on I've personally done.

Ive seen a friend of mine win the first Blitzball tournament thing in FF10 that is the "supposed to lose" part of that game. Took him like 3 hours but he really wanted to win lol.

Some of my recent endeavors to this kind of thrill include-
Winning a 20 vs 300 fight in Mount & Blade warband with only 2 wounded people.
And Winning against 2 wolves together on the highest difficulty in Lugaru.
Before anybody labels me pretentious indie dick, I would like to say that I stumbled upon lugaru when a news post about it was posted on the escapist. If you want to try it, go for the combat mechanics as everything else sucks donkey balls.

Margulis in Xenosaga Episode I- used Momo Guard so that Ziggy would always take the hits, and Margulis can never one-shot kill him from full. And of course you can easily win all the 'hopeless' boss fights in Wild Arms 3 in a New Game Plus.

If I don't know I'm supposed to lose, I give it a go (of course). If I know that it's hopeless I take the surrender option if possible, rather than waste time and possible resources.

Technically by losing a supposed to lose fight you win because the goal was to lose and by losing you win.

I know this question may sound stupid to some, but I bring it up because in some games you actually can win a 'supposed to lose fight'. Usually however it ends up with your character losing anyway. Personally I have won two of said fights in games, one in Kingdom Hearts and another in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai. How about you, my fellow escapists?
Yes, but typically it changes very little.

I think the movie "Final Fantasy: Advent Children" was making a joke about this in Tifa's fight scene where she wins after an epic martial arts battle, the victory fanfare plays (which turns out to be the bad guy's cell phone ring tone) and then he knocks her out easily and the storyline continues. :)

It's also sort of amusing given the stereotype in JRPGs of how all these female characters who are absolutly ridiculous in combat manage to get kidnapped or subdued at some point in cinematics with what seems to be minimal effort by someone who shouldn't be able to pull it off.

Truthfully I think "fights your supposed to lose" should be removed from games entirely.

In fighting games I do not think there is such a thing though, since winning those especially difficult fights is typically a way of unlocking extra features or alternate endings. Sort of like the original "Rival Schools" where one of the keys to fighting the REAL final boss is to beat this guy who attacks you between rounds who is ridiculously overpowered, where the game continues even after you presumably lose.

Final Fantasy 8, the spider crab robot monster thing in Dollet.

It's not strictly a 'supposed to lose' fight, more accurately it's 'supposed to run away and let your mate kill it for you in a really cool cutscene'. But it is winnable and you get a massive bonus for doing so. It's just fucking hard if you don't grind out a bit of levelling and a lot of magic beforehand, which I've never bothered to do.

I had no idea I was supposed to lose the ambush fight in Dragon Age, I just thought it was unusually hard, I feel like i've missed out some content now! D:

I was able to level enough to hurt Dias in the Tournament in Star Ocean 2. I 'beat' him, but it still had me getting whooped.

Fighting Anubis in Zone of the Enders, when they told me to run, I kept fighting him. You Can do some damage to him, just like in Zone of the Enders 2. But after a while, the game just stops dealing him damage.

Yeah, I call Bullcrap. Can't fight him yet, my a**, ADA.

Not a boss battle, but at the end of Crisis Core when the soldiers keep coming, I had them all dead and it eventually just forced me to the cut scene that it goes to when you "die".

Blah blah stuff Angerwing said about surviving a lengthy time against Desann in a supposed to lose fight, lightning and grip etc...
Blah blah blah stuff I said, Desann supposed to lose fight, lightning and grip etc...
That was the fight. I survived by running and kiting him around the ships while I tried to figure out how to kill him. As I said, crazy.
Ha! That's the way to go about it then, heheh! Groovy work!

I managed Dragon Age's Cauthrien the first time, but 2nd playthrough on Nightmare I was murdered. I was surprised to see I dind't get a "Game Over" screen.

And I didn't 'win', per se, but at the end of Crisis Core, those damn soldiers couldn't kill me. I'd gotten to level 100, best equipment, best materia, regenerated more damage than they could inflict. I eventually turned the game off, reloaded, put on crappy equipment and went back in. Even then, they had a hard time.

In Starcraft 2 "In Utter Darkness" I actually had to let those zerg tear my base down and move my armies back to give the poor sods a chance.

I'm just going to say two words that any Street Fighter player will immediately understand.

"Blanka mode."

An' no I've never won when the game goes into it. I think that's the point.

"Ooooooooh So we think we're THAT good do we?"

"Huh? Me? No nononononononono I just got lucky? Yeah! Lucky that was all I ju-Owowowowowowowowowowow!!!!"
