My friend made an Arcane Warrior and killed them all single-handedly. No kiting, and I think the rest of his party died.
Yeah, Arcane Warriors can be pretty gamebreaking, but it requires a very specific and dreadfully boring build. But I can totally see how it could be done.

An oldy this, but the best one ever.

When Tabula Rasa ended it was supposed to go out on an unwinnable fight, waves of the hardest enemies in the game assaulting non stop until everyone was dead, then the universe ends.

However, not only did the the players of Tabula Rasa hold the line, they won the battle outright. So instead of a downer ending to the MMO, it ended on peace and victory, the developers genuinely didn't expect that to happen, which was nice.

Well I was playing Star Trek: Bridge Commander yesterday. I like to make up my own scenarios and storylines. Yesterday it was "Sci-Fi Crossover: Cylons Vs Goa'uld" with me as the Goa'uld. First fight was 3 Cylon Raiders vs an Al'kesh. The Raiders kicked my Ass. Then it was 3 Cylon Basestars Vs 1 Hatak mothership. I was supposed to lose and it would have signified the danger the Cylons faced (I like my scenarios to have a good narrative), but instead I kicked seven shades out of all 3 of them. It ruined the story; was fun though.

Also in Enter the Matrix I like to put the cheats on and fight the Agents. You CAN kill them, but you need to use a specific gun.

In Oblivion I killed the assassin that was supposed to kill the emperor, so I couldn't move and the emperor just stood completely still and watched me...

I beat the Vanguard in the Demon's Souls tutorial, but once you know how to beat him he's actually really easy so i don't actually know if that should count.
I also thought that was a 'supposed to lose' battle untill someone told me that it was possible to win. It was so well done when he comes at you my only thought was "I'm fucked, time to die now" and die I did.

Once I knew it was possible to win I went back and figured out that he only has a few moves which are easy to predict, but the sheer intimidation killed me without even trying the first time.

On Blood Omen (The first Kain game) right at the start they send about 40 assassins to kill you which as a human you're supposed to have no chance of. I figured out it was possible to win the battle and proceeded to spend about an hour on it until I finally killed them all. Rather disappointingly nothing happened, you couldn't leave as they'd blocked off the road and you just had to wander about or restart the game. Disapointing really.

In the Scenario Campaign in Tekken 6, some stages have the boss come out early. You're supposed to chip away at their health until they run away, but it's possible to defeat them before even reaching the end of the stage.

In Megaman X at the end of the introduction level, you are supposed to lose to Vile in an armor suit so Zero can save you. I kept this fight going for 45 minutes once. He has no health bar so he isn't killable but you can definitely fight him.

I don't think fights like this are good design. They only work once. Every other time you come through the area you just purposely die and it looks silly.

In Chrono Trigger, when you first come face-to-face with Lavos, he does his "Destruction rains from the heavens" attack, which is supposed to K.O. your party in one turn. On a New Game +, if your stats are high enough, you can survive the attack and defeat Lavos right there.
This is intentional, as it provides one of the many separate endings of the game.

Yeah, In DBZ Boudakai tenkaichi 2.
The fight where you are hercule versus Perfect Cell and you have to survive for a short amount of time. He has a couple of attacks that can 1-hit you and I STILL managed to kill him before the time ran out. Hard mode is fun.

and yeah, hercule is by far the worst character in the game.
That's amazing, considering that in the show Hercule is just a stronger-than-average normal guy and Perfect Cell could probably blow the planet up by looking at it funny.

What happens when you defeat Perfect Cell with Hercule, anyway?
Im pretty sure it just ended the match as usual but gave you a bigger than usual reward. That's what most of the loss/survival fights in that game do when you win.

Also, in the game hercule has 'present bomb' which destroys them as long as you keep in close range the whole time, and with the stupid COM players, that isn't too hard.

4-5 years ago I was running Scarlet Monastery Cathedral in WoW, there's a boss fight which works based on the principle "Boss 1 comes, Boss 1 dies, Boss 2 comes, Boss 2 reaches certain % of health, Boss 2 freezes everyone while she resurrects Boss 1, etc.".

During the freezing period you're not supposed to be able to kill her because she has a lot of health left at that time, we were escorted by a high-end geared warlock at that time, her dots killed the boss and the encounter bugged and we got no loot.

The 'boss' after the tutorial in Demon's Souls.
It's not that hard, but you're supposed to lose.
If you beat him, it'll just skip to a cutscene where the demon just punches you to death.
There's more, but can't recall them just now.

Infinity Blade, on the iPad/phone.

I don't think he's meant to be impossible, just ruddy hard. I killed the Deathless on my first playthough, all in my starting armour/weapons.
Dodge FTW :)

Like many of the replies here, I have and it can be frustrating or invigorating - depending on if the developers ever considered the remote possibility of a player win and provided some kind of reward or way to move forward without losing.

The best use of a "you cannot win" battle I have seen in plot structure is the end of Crisis Core for the PSP - it was heart rending for me, even though I knew - like I imagine most people who played FF7 or knew anything about the FF7 plot at all - that I could not leave that battle alive.

I think ser cathrien (dragon age: origins) also shouldn't count since you die when you loose. you should obviously not loose -.-

and I mean both times you fight her.
