I am glad that I am the first to mention Star Wars, Just about everyone I know has seen the movies think they are a Goddamned expert of Star Wars and tell me facts in the movies I learned a long time ago (because I am a huge Star Wars nerd)
AAARRGGH!! You have no idea how badly I identify with that one right there. As I have stated over and over I pretty much seem to be a nerd on the inside, and this idea seems to be backed up by the fact that I have read nearly every post-RotJ star wars book printed (I am way far behind on the Legacy of the Force series due to college though). Not to mention I have read a good number of the important sith based books. So I find it incredibly frustrating when people try to act like they know alot about star wars because they know the movies by heart. My first question to these people is if they even know who Grand Admiral Thrawn is. And they never do...

I've heard a lot of these in my day, but the down-right strangest thing I've ever heard was when I broke up with a girl, and she began to detail to my why I couldn't (not shouldn't, COULDN'T) dump her. When I asked her how she arrived at this conclusion, she said it was because she had gotten a B+ in English in high school. WTF!?!?!?

My mother has taught college level classes, pretty much all my life. Back in the late 90s she was teaching in a community college, where she was getting a lot of students who were coming back to school after having been in a job of one type or another. One of her students had spent the last 25 years on the deck of an aircraft carrier, loading ordinance.

Around this same time I had a friend like the one described here. He actually picked an argument about ordinance loading techniques and procedure with this vet because of his observations while playing Falcon 4.

People who are into Fantasy RPGs and other Fantasy oriented things are like that too. I had a friend who thought that just because he had watched attack styles in a video game he knew how to sword fight. We went to england on a college trip to europe and we ended up finding a "historic blacksmith" in one of the towns outside of London. He goes to try it out and could barely lift it shoulder high. Ahhh good times.

Star Wars arguments are just... painful for me. There's only one guy I know where both of us have an understanding past seeing the movies or playing Battlefront.
As for real world stuff, I have a basic understanding of weapons, but I hope it will get better in about 9 months when I go into basic. Whenever I play an FPS with my Dad in the room, he always says something to the effect of "Shooting is not nearly that easy" since he was in the Army.
And for Zombies, I read the Guide and WWZ, and it's fun to throw that kind of stuff around to kill time. Me and my boss both read the Guide, and occasionaly say "What if this happens" and stuff.

For the most part I try to keep away from stuff I don't know much about.

There's always going to be delusionals who will get an unwarranted confidence in their abilities, but hey, just ignore the crazies. I've actually learnt quite a bit through video-games and other media. I've learnt weapon basics from first person shooters (no, I'm not considering myself special ops - but I know how to point and aim, I know to shoot in short bursts rather than just spray, I know that silencers affect aim, etc). I've learnt many a medical term from House, Scrubs, etc AND used these correctly with medical professionals. Games like Guitar Hero and DDR improve rhythm. Guitar Hero even teaches the basics of real guitar playing - hold the note and strum the chords, higher notes are actually further down the strings not up (watch someone play air guitar listening to rock songs - I bet they get that one wrong).

Most people will realise that what they're learning is either incorrect or highly watered down, but they have still learnt something. I wouldn't completely throw away the education factor in games.

I do quite like the comments about Star Wars and LOTR fans though. Just seems hilarious that we're ragging someone for making comments about how extensive their knowledge of a fictional universe is, and justifying it with "I've got much more knowledge of said fiction universe." It's fictional! Follow it as much as you want, but realise that the author(s) can create anything they want at any point, and often do. Then they can go back and retcon, rewriting it. They just make things up, and then fit it into the universe later. Particularly something like Star Wars, with the multiple writers involved. You're not aquiring regular knowledge that can be of any use, it's aquiring a list of useless (at least to the real world) information.

People that think they're incredibly knowledgeable about classic cars after playing Forza 2 or GT4.

I like to think I know my fair share about classic cars, I've been to about 6 or 7 shows and have a few pretty thick auto books I've read cover to cover a few times each. I still can't tell the difference between a '66 and a '67 GTO, but my dad can from 50 yards away; which kind of embarrasses me.

I'm a bit of a computer hardware geek, and it really annoys me when friends think they know more about hardware than me just because they've got a job assembling computers for Dell or HP or whoever. Yay, you can follow instructions and put together fairly fool-proof systems, but that doesn't automatically qualify you to debate about differences between motherboards or whatever.

Also, people who have a little bit of experience with JavaScript or Flash and then think they can program just about anything they want.

Eller
I have one of those friends. He actually argued with me over developing games on different platforms because he hears something or reads something off the internet or through a friend and thinks he knows all about it. Whereas I am a real game programmer who does it for a living at an actual development studio and the pinnacle of his programming experience is a java course he took in university. And he just won't give it up.

Arguing over whether developing for the PS3 vs Wii vs 360 is better... no, man, no, just stop.

Anyone notice how people who play a particular game (Eg, war, military shooters), think that they are an expert in guns and explosives afterwards?
I have a mate who is obsessed with CoD4, but know thinks he is knowledgeable on a range of weapons and knows how to stance, reloading mechanism proper way to fire them. We went shooting the other day (his first time), and he tried firing a .22 (simple Bolt rifle), he could barely hold the thing up on his own, he didn't realize how heavy REAL weapons were Lol.
Anyone else think of when someone who has played a game thinks he is an expert...?

The same thing is true about shooting a weapon (notice I didn't say gun).
...Yeah mate, i quite like how you didn't include the last part of my topic, don't worry, i put it here for you. Read it next time

P.S
I have NO idea about guns, weapons etc.. I've been shooting a few times, but haven't fired anything more powerful then a 303, and don't know anything more about weapons other then what i watch on "Future weapons" on the discovery channel. Don't get the impression i have a clue about weapons, lol.

I really hate people who watch Conan, 300 or something else along those lines, and then think they know all about swordfighting (or other general melee combat) and then try and argue it with me.

Clarification: I train in sword and axe fighting with a group where I live. It's not some little "lol swords" group either, our trainer is actually certified and we do use steel weapons and all that jazz. Some of my bones have more dents than I like to think about :x

I read it, my "weapon" comment wasn't aimed at belittling you.

Now that's something you don't hear everyday. I can bet that certainly gets on your nerves. It's like those people that watch Bourne and think they're good in hand to hand now.

In response to the 'Star Wars' comments, I know someone (I wouldn't consider them a friend) that claims to be an expert in the Star Wars films and didn't even get the 'I find your lack of faith disturbing' quote. Nor did he get any of the other major quotes from the films - he had just read the book, claimed to be an expert but he had never seen any of the 'source material'.

I'm not sure about games but after 300 came out everyone became an expert on Sparta.
God after that movie came out I had to listen to friends and others who "thought" they knew anything about history say things that made my soul die a little bit.

One comment that made me cry a tad on the inside was and I shall quote, "Yeah it was a good movie but it wasn't historically accurate.". I followed that statement by trying to explain that the movie 300 was based on a graphic novel by a man named Frank Miller who only loosely based the story on historical events. After stating that I was again treated to this persons thoughts; "Yeah I know that but I really doubt there were guys like the one with blades for hands or that one that the Immortals brought into battle." to which all I could do was /facepalm.

Sorry for the rant but that comment brought back some memories.
You do not want 300 to be historically accurate.
yeah, 300 as historical accurate would be horsecrap
It would be brokeback mountain meets a child called it.
Haha, I remember about 5 years back before the movie came out, having a project on that particular battle, then when the movie came out, all my friends thought they knew about the battle, and I had to try and tell them...

How ******* stupid they were...
Funnn timesss!

That was my point I tried to get through to my friend in our conversation. I should have gone into detail about the fact that if it were trying to be historically accurate it would involve a lot of guys that weren't incredibly buff that were also quite filthy having gratuitous sex before and after battles.
