It seems like I can't go a week without hearing someone complaining about Mass Effect 3. Just for a change of pace, let's talk about the things we do like about the game.
NOTHING. To clarify, I still haven't got around to playing it yet. But I do love Mass Effect 1 & 2!

I liked nearly everything about the game except for that Kai Leng prick. I would have beaten his ass hard on Thessia and the Citadel, but Bioware said I couldn't until I invaded Cerberus Headquarters.

The thing I liked the most was how greatly the combat had been improved. They revamped the clunky cover system from ME2, and generally made the movement more fluid, especially with the infinite sprint.

I loved the interactions between crew members. Garrus dicking around with James was one of the highlights of the game for me. Next up is the raptor... a mattock that takes advantage of infiltrator damage perks... yesplz. One other thing is that my Shepard, being an import from ME1 to ME2 and then from ME2 to ME3, was affected by the face bug. I was forced to make a new one from scratch... and he looked so much freaking better; he looks like a real actor now it's crazy. I wish I could export this face back to ME1 and ME2.

When it comes to ME3, pretty much the only complaints you'll hear are about the ending.

Actually there were a lot of things about ME3 that I, as well as many other people on the Bioware boards, complained about; the ending was just the most egregious example. But this thread isn't about complaining so...

I really liked the music in ME3. I liked the music in all three of the games, but some of the pieces in ME3 really stood out for me (such as Leaving Earth and an End Once and For All).

Both of those songs are done by Clint Mansell if I'm not mistaken. Good song. Actually I agree with this person, the music was really emotional and brought me to the edge of tears.

I really liked Jack's redesign.

She actually was attractive in ME3, as opposed to ME2 where she looked like a crack addict who'd been rolling around in the garbage.

Oh I loved a Mass Effect 3 a bunch! The ending sent me off with a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth, but I can look past that. Oh, and lieutenant basterd Kai Leng is the biggest douche I've seen in a while. I feel kind of sorry for his voice actor.

Things I liked in particular:

- The Genophage subplot. Made the game for me, really. I love Mordin and Wrex as characters, it was awesome. Oh, and Thresher Maw going bonkers on Reaper just screams awesome.

- Garrus - The Dark Turian Rises.

- Taking down the Reaper on Rannoch had me satisfied for quite some time.

- Tali, the cute space nerd that she is. Lovely. (I ain't even mad about the stock picture)

- MULTIPLAYER, seriously, the multiplayer was fuckin' amazing! I still play it every now and then!

i agree with this, except i will lump kai lang and running all over the citadel eavesdropping on conversations as two other things i could have lived without.

esp. the former. what a complete waste of my time. i was also disappointed that at no time, could i have legion in my group.

I like:

- Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man. I just think he did a top notch job voicing him.
while i agree he did a serviceable job as the IM, every time he talked all i could see was martin sheen and not the character he was supposed to portray. it was kind of distracting for me. his voice is just so recognizable.

it would have been like having morgan freeman do admiral anderson. i wouldn't see anderson so much as i would see some bad avatar of morgan freeman calling me "son" all the time.

Why is every 5th thread on this forum about bioware/mass effect??
Because, on the Escapist, every 5th thread now-a-days is always...always...one of the following:

1: Someone bitching about Mass Effect - either about how awful the game is or asking why people keep saying the game is awful.

2: Someone bitching about Skyrim - either about how funny some bug/glitch was or how awful the game is because some bug/glitch ruined their experience.

3: Someone bitching about Half-Life/Steam/Valve - either asking how anyone can possibly like them or why people keep talking about them.

When you've been on the site as long as I have, you learn to skim through the thread topics and ignore pretty much every thread containing the words: Half-Life, Skyrim, Mass Effect, EA, Call of Duty, Halo, Steam, Valve, Activision, Blizzard, Bioware, Bethesda, friend-zone, sexism, "is it just me", and every/any thread with a very vague and misleading title. [sub]To name a few[/sub]

And yes, I'm aware of the irony of me posting in a Mass Effect thread after saying that.

Like a lot of other people have said, this is a case of it actually being easier to list the things you didn't like.

Personally though, What I enjoyed most were the payoffs. It goes to show how well the characters are written that I'm so emotionally invested in them that I get all choked up when some of them dont make it. Even though in Mass Effect 2 I've never gone through suicide mission without my entire squad surviving, Thinking back, I don't think any of their deaths would have had as much impact as they did in ME3. Speaking of which, I'm curious. Anyone played ME2 and lost Garrus? Is that even possible? Because I cant even imagine how ME3 would play out without him.

One thing I will say that I enjoyed more than I thought I would is the multiplayer. I dislike multiplayer modes as it is, but when they're crowbarred in 'just because', then I am even more likely to dislike them. But I still have fun with the multiplayer in this. maybe its because I have that obsessive streak, and the multiplayer has that collectable element with all the unlockable characters (oh, and of course it being madatory to get the best ending) but still, extremely fun.

I like the tone that it sets. The first few hours I played of it made me kind of skeptical because while the first two games (the second somewhat less than the first), despite being kind of militaristic had a heavy adventure-in-space vibe to them. Mass Effect 3 by contrast was a full on war game, and I really don't like war games.

So I found it to be kind of a pleasant surprise how bleak it turned out to be. There's all the usual war rhetoric about how we must fight and heroes and duty and blah, blah blah, but it ends up contrasting really well to all the doom and gloom and the ever increasingly hopelessness of the situation. The whole "rrrargh WAR!!!" angle starts looking more like a picture that the people in the game want to paint for themselves rather than a picture the game wants to paint for you, which I really liked.

It's easy to make a game all serious and gloomy, but it's much harder for a game to make you feel all serious and gloomy, and I thought Mass Effect 3 did just that. There were some genuinely gripping moments, which is in large part thanks to how involved you have had a chance to become with the world and its inhabitants before the story took a turn for the darker.

It's not a perfect game, but the fact that they nailed the tone of it in a way that no other game I've played recently has done made it rise above its flaws, at least for me.

Thankfully for me there's a lot...
- Ashley and Tali's Drunk Scenes on The Normandy
- Pretty much everything involving Jack
- Pretty much everything involving Garrus
- Pretty much everything involving Liara (except for her interactions with The Prothean)
- Grunt's Badass Scene in the Aarlack company mission
- Everything involved in Curing the Genophage
- The "quiet" moments that Shepard gets to spend with her/his teammates that help bring some emotional punch to the finale.
- The opening scene being set in Vancouver (as a Canadian this tickles me)
- The between character interactions on the Normandy.
- The Combat Gameplay, because I just love shooting and Mass Effect 3 had some fun shooting.
- The new Weapon Upgrade and Levelling Systems, more RPGish than ME2 without having some of the needless RPG bloat of ME1.
- Rannoch/The Quarian Geth War, this was easily the best part in the game for me.
- All of the big, epic space battle scenes near the end.
- The Extended Cut Endings, they pretty much "fixed" a lot of the big issues in the ending for me... even if it still wasn't a perfect ending.

There are lots of good things to like about ME3 (and some bad things beyond just the ending) but the single moment that most stands out for me personally is Liara's time capsule. When that happened it seriously skyrocketed and became one of my favorite moments in gaming. It captures the emotions of the second game so unbelievably well, with the grim realization that it's extremely likely everyone is going to die and the brief moment of camaraderie and friendship that the two friends/partners/allies manage to enjoy before jumping back into the fight.

Mordin on Tuchanka is a close second though. I played my Renegade Shepard first and I don't think I've ever felt so torn in a video game. I just couldn't bring myself to click that button. And then the scene when he approaches his death and sings...oh man.

I did in fact lose Garrus in my first ever ME2 play through, but I didn't take that one any further so I don't know how ME3 plays out without him. Somebbody will have it on Youtube though I'm sure.

For those of you who insist on complaining about another ME3 thread, just know that the positive opinions in this thread have convinced me after all this time to load up the game this weekend and watch the Extended Cut. After beating the game and going through all the different stages of emotional turmoil from seeing characters I'd become genuinely attached to swept aside for the original ending (I refuse to use the plural there for obvious reasons) it just felt like too much to load up that last mission yet again until now.

Thanks, Escapists. Without this, I would've shelved this one without ever thinking about EC.

The best part of the game is going to the Citadel after Tuchanka. Garrus atop the Citadel, Liara in the Presidium, Jack and Joker in Purgatory, Ashley at the memorial... probably the best writing in the game. The aftermath of Thessia is also great. As everyone else said, only major problems are the ending and some of the stupid stuff with Cerberus.
