Hey, who's this guy...? Oh, it's fucking DANTE. What do you reckon about the re-design?

SALAMANDERJOE THEORY IN-COMING!! [sub]I am generally right 76% of the time...[/sub]

I have a theory. This is Dante before Devil May Cry 3, where Ninja Theory has set the story, BEFORE his demonic powers all come into play via his Rebellion sword. This is the reason why he is beaten up, has no white hair present and arrested by the police. The story is also set around his mother's death, him going out against them naughty naughty demons, getting his original sword nd pissing off Virgil somehow. End of theory.
This was the most intelligent thing I saw in this entire thread, and the first thought I had when I watched the trailer. He looks like he's about 16 years old, doesn't have white hair, wasn't using a sword, and he was smoking. Origin story makes the most sense. DMC3, though set earlier on the time-line than the others, wasn't really a proper prequel since it didn't so much as embellish on Dante's past as it was just SET in his past.
I'd actually agree, most of the games seem set around Dante in his early to late twenties. This looks like Dante when he was 16-18, so I guess I'm a little more lenient. I'd actually try this game but I kind of wish it'd be more of a brawler type of fighting rather than a hack'n'slash. Still, the video wasn't bad and I'm sure that at the very least this is early concept images and not a full representation, I'm sure they'll want to refine the look some more. Plus he could look like my old pet craw-fish mated with Mr Rodgers and as long as the game was as fun as the first Devil May Cry, I'll be as happy as can be.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand this is a travesty, DMC was just fine as is, and I LOVED Dante. This is... I don't even know the right word for it. A travesty. :( On the other hand, the weapon mechanics, if pulled off, could be fun, which is what gaming is all about. Don't know what to make of the cell shading tho.

A reboot? After only four games? Four successful games at that? What the fuck are they thinking?? *Sigh* I should of seen this coming when they replaced Dante with Nero as the lead, but it was so well presented that I gave it a go, and it worked out great!!

But this... I don't know. I may find myself never playing future DMC titles. And that, as a fan, saddens me. :(

Well my first impression was "What the fuck?" and my consequent impressions were the same. I'm still baffled.

...WHY!? Why would you change his appearance? Also, why didn't we get a SEQUEL!? Things were looking interesting with that Nero dude and shit. They left the story completely hanging.
This...WTF have they done?! Why? Is the only response i can come with at the moment. If this the DMC is going to play out then Capcom really dropped the ball... Dante does not smoke and does not like a damn emo! GAH!! Must...Leave thread....Before fanboy takeover...

Have any of you even noticed that, when he's fighting the enemy and starts going all crazy/angry/demonic, his hair starts to shift to a grayish white at the top? And that maybe, JUST MAYBE, that this is a sign that we're looking at a younger Dante before his full powers have awakened?
you know your right there is something there hopefully its not just light reflecting off his head or something dumb, i think he is way to scrawny tho even if it is him younger that doesnt explain a shift in skelital (sp) structure dante is alot brouder then that, also although its not then end of the world that they changed a charicters (again sp) look but it can be a very bad idea as we forge a link to a charicter over time and changing the way they look (and judging by this the way they act) really ruins that bond it my be cheesy but it is true

I'm not pissed off when characters change, but there are some iconic elements that remain constant. When thinking of Dante, I think straight away of the white hair and red trench coat. Now he looks more like a generic emo kid. Next they'll announce that Nolan North will voice him.

Take a good hard look at yourselves, Escapists. OH MAH GAWD THEY CHANGED HOW THE CHARACTER LOOKS THAT ISN'T HIM ANYMOAR QQ ANGRY LETTERS PETITIONS PROTESTS BAWWWWWWWW.
Yahtzee would be ashamed. ASHAMED.
a good amount of post in here..and only two reasonable ones? shows how humanity loves to just ***** it seems

now, DMC1 was the first every PS2 game i played, so as come could say, it broke the PS2-cherry for me..and damn was that game fun I thought. DMC2 comes around, and I like it at first..until I get the machine guns, or actually start using DT..all in all:way too easy. DMC3, fucking pain in the ass, but it renewed my love for the series. DMC4, while it seemed more lazily made, it seemed like it was good enough, to keep it going(although I still don't care for Nero, he was atleast..acceptable).
So, what was the point of that? Nothing much except to esablish I played all the games.

Ok, back on point. While I was initially pissed about this new Dante-look, I tried thinking of what perspective story-wise they didn't touch yet to explain this. Initially I was thinking they're finally going through with how in DMC1, Dante said to Mundus to say hi to his son for him. Then, I seen SALAMANDERJOE's post..made more sense all things given.

In the end: I am a fan, and while upset, I could see how this would/could work, kinda hope it does.

Actually DMC 3 was the origin story. There were two manga volumes dedicated to DMC 3 that covered the events leading up to the games, and various aspects of Dante's life from a child to adult, including the death of his Mother by demons. And Dante only awakened to his devil powers after the confrontation with Vergil in DMC 3.

As for age, Dante is around 18-21/22 in DMC 3, early twenties in DMC, assumed late 20's/early 30's in DMC 2, and 40 years old in DMC 4 (as stated in his in-game biography). He looks about 18-20 in this reboot, so a "true origin story" unfortunately doesn't hold up. I'm not sure I would like it even if it was tho.

This looks more like something from Prototype, or any other sci-fi bio-enhanced/experiment genre than a Stylish Magic Hack-and-Slasher. As for the sword, watch the trailer again. He clearly has a weapon that transitions (in order) from a halberd, an axe, a sword, then some-kinda whip thing (looks exactly like the whip/grapple arm from Prototype).

Not to put you guys down or anything, but sadly your theory doesn't hold up. I kinda wish it did, then I could blame this new direction on just bad design, like DMC2.

A lot of people are trying to come up with some way this isn't Dante. Sorry everyone, it's a prequel, that is Dante, and you all should be upset.

That is in no way shape or form Dante. No matter how anyone tries to justify that is not Dante and i refuse to accept any explanations.
exactly this.
i hope that 5 minutes in the game some demon kicks him in the balls so hard his hair turns white.
and where is his amulet? he is supposed to have that since birth.

He looks absolutely awful. He doesn't look more "Western", he just looks like more of a dick. Granted, Dante was a bit of a smarmy bugger anyway, but at least he was likeable, and looked easy on the eyes. This guy just looks like a generic grumpy action dude with a dark past.

Also, he smokes, which is to make him "cool", amirite? Oh, and he has a new voice and, presumably, a new voice actor, who sounds utterly balls-achingly boring. And gravelly. Boring and gravelly does not a good voice make.

I said it it the other thread about the new Some-dude-who-isn't-Dante May Cry, but why does this even exist? The series didn't need a reboot - it wasn't old, its still a lot of fun, and the characters are genuinely likeable. I honestly don't know what Capcom and Ninja Theory were thinking, other than "Let's alienate our existing fanbase".

Come on Capcom/Ninja Theory. Get it together and announce the real Devil May Cry 5, starring our favourite white-haired, red-trenchcoat-wearing, sword-swinging, dual-gun blazing, smarmy bugger with a penchant for getting himself stabbed and then getting back up.

just something from wiki :p

Dante's confident and fearless attitude has gained him widespread popularity. He was ranked third among the "Top Ten Coolest Video Game Characters" list of Screwattack.[8] His design and personality received praise from numerous reviews, including this quote from IGN: "a dark anti-hero kind of guy even a down-in-the-dumps, disgruntled teenager would love".[42] GameDaily named him one of their favorite Capcom characters, ranking him seventh on their "Top 25" list and stating that the various aspects of the character made him an "unstoppable force".[43] Game Informer described him as "one of the most bad-ass characters around", citing his contrast between the character and those previously seen in the Resident Evil series.[17] GameSpy described his appearance as "awe-inspiring to look at", describing his attire as reminiscent of Vincent Price.[44] GamesRadar named him "Mister 2001" in their article on the sexiest new characters of the decade, stating that compared to the female characters in Devil May Cry, Dante was the hottest of them all. The editor cited his muscular build, hair, his fighting abilities, and his attitude for why he won.[45] They also listed him as one of the 25 best new characters of the decade, calling him "unforgettable" as well as stating that he set the template for "smartass action heroes".[46]
