Good afternoon, people of Ninja Theory,
My name is Connor and I have been an avid Devil May Cry fan since the demo of the original game was released alongside Resident Evil: Code Veronica X. The second entry excluded, the Devil May Cry series has produced some of the best games I've played, with the original being my all-time favorite game. I love this series in all of its badassery and pure silliness, which is why I was a slight concerned when I heard a rumor that Capcom had turned the series over to you. Seeing as I never played Heavenly Sword, and was thus incapable of making an informed decision regarding the quality of your company, I wasn't certain what to think. Now that the rumor has been confirmed and the trailer has been revealed at the Tokyo Game Show, I feel the need to do something I've never done before in my life: write to the company responsible.
Please bear in mind that I do not mind the idea of a company outside of Capcom taking the franchise and mixing things up a bit. That's perfectly fine and seems like a good way to keep the franchise from stagnating, which it started to do by the fourth entry. In fact, judging by the trailer, the atmosphere and enemy design resemble the original far more than Devil May Cry 2, 3, and 4 did, which is fantastic, as the atmosphere is the main reason why I prefer the original over its sequels to such a degree. However, something is dreadfully amiss. A core element of what makes the franchise so great is its protagonist, the lovable bastard Dante, and I fear something went wrong with this project in this regard.
Devil May Cry 2 not withstanding, Dante has shown himself to be a cocky, upbeat, energetic bundle of kick ass, and part of what makes this franchise so great is that he is the one at the center of it. Devil May Cry worked so well because it presented a dark. moody, and occasionally genuinely creepy environment with a variety of disturbing enemies that set the player on edge (which they did, if only for me), and all the while, Captain Smartass, cool as a cucumber, laughs in their faces and beats them into seventeen shades of fucked-up-edness. His character runs on style, man-prettiness, and sarcasm, and it's glorious.
This brings me to the reason I've decided to write this in the first place. Seeing this new Dante raises a red flag, and for a variety of reasons. First, he doesn't look the part. That trademark stylish, long-ish white hair and handsome face accompanied by that smug grin and sarcastic expression let everyone know that he thought he was one of the best and baddest motherfuckers to ever live, and seeing him in action let everyone know that he's probably right. This Dante doesn't have any of that. The original Dante had a muscular physique indicative of long hours of professional demon ass kicking and a stylish wardrobe conveying the last colors that his enemies would ever see. This appearance exhibited his sense of style and self-love almost as much as his attitude did. This Dante doesn't have any of that. This Dante is unkempt, uncharacteristically thin, lacking style, and worst of all, he isn't cool. He tries to be, as shown by that haircut straight out of one of the sillier subgenres of rock and by his slow suckling of a cigarette much akin to what I see thirteen year olds do on street corners, but he isn't. This guy looks like he's trying as hard as he can to be cool and intimidating, and that's the problem. Dante didn't try to be cool; he simply was. Dante didn't seem like the kind of guy who picked out his clothes to look cool, but rather as the kind of guy who simply liked how they looked. Dante didn't seem like the kind of guy to move in the way he did to impress onlookers, but rather because he was amusing himself by playing with his enemies. This guy tries to be cool, and as a result, fails.
Now, that's not to say that this design can't work at all. If this game takes place within the same canon as the rest of the games, and this just happens to be the original Dante's son, it could work. If the original Dante died, leaving his son alone in the harshness of reality, this design could make quite a lot of sense. However, if this is set apart from the rest of the series, it doesn't seem right for this guy to be the new Dante. Unless he gets a name change or a total redesign, he's probably going to seem like little more than an insult to fans of the original games than an alternate take on an established hero. However, I will give credit where credit is due and go on to state that this Dante would probably never say something like this.
If this message was at all offensive, I sincerely apologize. I realize that you didn't exactly ask for input from people like myself (not to my knowledge, anyway), but there are many fans who are extremely put off by this new design, and I wanted to help bring that to your attention. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and I wish you good fortune in designing this game.
Best wishes,
Connor
P.S. I wasn't completely certain which email address to send this message to, so if this would have been more suited towards one of the other addresses, I apologize. This one seemed to be the most logical choice.
