How could Pokemon win you back (Assuming it lost you?)

There?ve been a lot of Pokemon threads as of late... thought I?d get in on the action. :)

Whether you love the current iterations of the Pokemon games or you hate them, you have to agree that the series has been using their basic storyline formula in almost every main game. I like the new games, but I don't think the series is aging as gracefully as it could.

The advent of Pokemon Black and White is upon us, and there's a lot of speculation on the changes it'll be making to the series. So here's my question: If you are of the mindset that the series needs a change, or you're losing interest in it, what, in your opinion, does the next Pokemon game need to have/be in order to turn the franchise around for you? What would it need to do in order to ?win you back,? so to speak? This can be anything from a graphics enhancement to a complete overhaul of the series.

Personally, I?d like to see a complete break from the old formula (Get starter from professor, beat five gyms, beat an evil organization, beat four more gyms, beat elite four, etc.) Here?s my idea:

You begin as the champion of your region, One day, you receive a call from your friend, a champion in a neighboring region, asking for assistance. According to him, there is an organization spreading throughout his region, who hold the belief that humans should not master pokemon as they have. They believe humans are like slave drivers, and those who retain control over pokemon must be punished. This changes things up from the usual ?Small-town kid who just got his first Pokemon? routine, and it gives us a main villain team who doesn?t just want to take over/destroy the world. Now, I know this is the direction B/W is taking with their villain, and that, to me... is awesome. :)

You begin your adventure with three starters instead of one. Since you?re already champion, you could start the game choosing your three from a pool of six pokemon (your ?championship team,?) and you?d begin your adventure. In order to balance this, the starters wouldn?t be extremely strong.

Additionally, each gym is legitimately hard, as opposed to the current ones that you can completely sweep with one well-leveled pokemon. The gyms in this game won?t simply be milestones to show how far you?ve gotten in the main story. They will exist in a fashion similar to raid bosses in World of Warcraft -- you?ll need to level your team well, and set a strategy up in order to face them.

Lastly, gyms will be based on strategy, not type. The gyms will have themes such as ?One-Hit KO,? ?Annoyers,? ?Spikers,? etc.

Hopefully that wasn?t tl;dr. Okay, thoughts?

EDIT: Some folks thought I was trying to persuade people to see the franchise as stale. I'm not. I'm trying to get some cool ideas on what a revamped main series game could look like. I'm not attacking it here.

Also, I'm looking for ideas more from Pokemon fans. I'm not asking what would interest you if you just don't like the series.

It would need to make the Pokemon real. JK, I'll buy it anyway coz I'm a nerd like that.
I'd like to see some activity that contributes to gameplay done by the trainer rather than just the Pokemon.

I do kind of have high hopes for the new pokemon. New set, new area, sounds pretty nice.
Your idea does sound pretty nice. I like the idea of starting where you left off. Maybe it could be set in a region for a select few, with the level cap set to 200, and very high level enemies and npc's

More eeveelutions.

And more slots on my team so I can have them all in my party at once. God damned arbitrary 6 pokémon limit. I've got EIGHT eevees I want to carry with me :(

Legitimately challenging gyms would be a nice addition. More flexibility with starters as well. I want to start with an Eevee, like Douche did in Pokémon Yellow. :(

Monster designs that look just as good as the ones in the originals, real-time co-operative play (If they could make that work it would be awesome) and gameplay that's more friendly to the hardcore fanbase. That last one seems to have been met in the new Black and White installments; a lot of the pokemon who only have one evolution evolve in the mid-fifties, and the ones with two go even higher. The best one I saw was a Dark/Dragon type (awesome right?) that first evolves at level 50 and then again at 64. Sadly though, Serebii.net doesn't have the sprites so it might look completely ridiculous for all I know

it won't win me back. i suppose if they re-made Blue/Red but in 3D (not in 3D glasses 3D, as in a 3rd person view) with current gen graphics and when you enter a battle it's like Pokemon Staduim was it would be great.

Funny you should mention the plot of a team where the bad guys want to stop people from "Enslaving pokemon" and all that jazz. In Black and White, the notorious Team Plasma is doing EXACTLY that. Plus, I'm really looking forward to getting to know your main antagonist/Well Intentioned Extremist, N.

He wants to release Pokemon from being enslaved, having apparently grown up feeling closer to Pokemon than to humans. Every time you fight him, he has a different team, one that consists ONLY of Pokemon found in the area where you fight him. He sticks to his goal, basically asking the native Pokemon for help and then releasing them when the battle is over.

So yeah, I'm psyched for Black and White. However, I really hope that it does one tiny thing that fixes a problem that pissed me off to no end in SoulSilver...

Give wild Pokemon that drop some reasonable XP. When I'm waiting for Wednesday to roll around so I can get the phone number for a gym leader or call one up for a rematch, I don't want to roam around the highest-level area for wilds and have them give absolutely paltry amounts of experience. =__= Grinding in that game took forever... Ugh.

Bloody viseral combat

If I drop a trainers pokemon to 0 hp with a hyperbeam I don't want him to faint I want him to become a stain on the pavement.

I wish they would make a Pokemon MMO. I think it has some real potential. But it would be hard to do. A man can dream...

I don't have to agree with that at all. In fact, I completely disagree with you. Nothing in the series needs be changed. It is perfect just as is in my mind.

Please, a huge part of persuasion is not putting words in your audiences' mouths.

I will say that I did not read past that paragraph. I feel no need to. You have already turned me off as a listener at only the second paragraph.

Stop trying to make 150+ new pokemon for each new region, especially if there's going to be more than 8 or 9 new legendary pokemon. And I'd love to go back to another region after I beat the Elite Four like they did in G/S/C.

But these are just things that I'd like to see in new Pokemon games, I still like them enough to keep on buying them

What I would like would be a complete makeover. I know that diehard fans of pokemon would loathe my idea, but I belive it would be for the best. I would like to make it a 3-D world without those big-headed things that populate the game. So a more realistic veiw on the world. Although realism wouldn't be the key, it would be just to change the boring old face of the games forever. So basically the pokemon colosseum games, but those graphics iplemented in the game. This would also be able to bring alive the pokemon in their natural habitat. So you could see flocks of bird types flying overhead, or a school of magikarp in lakes.

By getting rid of them stupid fashion contest things, fucking horrible
Other than that I love the new pokemans equally as much I like the old ones

Or they could make it more realistic, better graphics, kind of like FF, and on consoles - would be cool, but I dont care really I love pokemans and can't wait for the new ones ^^

Isn't that essentially an extremist Pokémon Ranger?

Yeah that'd be pretty cool.

I feel, if done right, a 3D pokemon game where the fights are like the manga would be good. For instance you the trainer would be in the arena with the pokemon, having to dodge around the action, and maybe even pulling your pokemon's fat out of the fire. You would move your character with default controls and issue voice commands to your pokemon. The old 2D games were awesome but that was back when that was the thing. Now we have to technology to do a lot with the pokemon world but we don't. Hell I could lose myself in a pokemon augmented reality game. I'd walk out of work, put on a hat, visor, and gloves and stroll down the street looking for other trainers and wild pokemon to battle.

Pokemone doesn't need to "win me back", since it still has me.

Being able to join/start a criminal organisation like Team Rocket would be nice though...
