"Expletive!"

It happens and when it does you cant really do anything about it except suck it up and go back to beating those dirty hippies in that swamp.

sums it up pretty well.
I then contemplate quitting the game for a while, playing something else, and then coming back when I feel like playing again.

I have a PC and backup my save games every 6 months or so, started doing this after one of my hdd's from years ago died and lost my save game files. Though I have lost hdds since then, I have never lost another save game file.

But in relevance, I felt somewhat... annoyed.

Hell, awesome. I just saved over and lost fifty hours of Red Dead Redemption thinking it would be a cool idea to replay it from the beginning. Annoyed, but I left the whole rage thing behind when I left the age of 16. Now...well, I may have lost all that time, but my game disc didn't break so I didn't loose anything really important.

I've had it happen a few times due to both human error and technical issues I always feel like part of me is gone all that time spent and nothing to show for it. My playstation memory card just quit working that sucked since everything was gone. I've overwritten a save a few times and thats always the worst since it was your own fault, pc died made worse because not only were game saves gone but the warranty had just run out and the motherboard failed so I now had no computer. Luckily with the current consoles it easy to back up saves to a flash drive although a few games don't support it I back up what I'm playing at the end of each session just in case its alread saved a 150 hour fallout 3 file.

it doesn't happen often with me because I always double-save even when I'm the only one playing, but when it does happen my reaction usually falls between decent-sized rage to apocalyptic despair

I still can't play Skies of Arcadia due to trauma

I have two siblings, and in our family the kids share almost everything, especially somewhat more expensive things such as movies and games (a Batman figurine belonged to an individual child, but the Playstation and all the games were public property).

We even shared a single save file for our first plystation game: Spyro the Dragon. It seemed so vast (we were between the ages of 7-11) that we believed a collaborative effort was needed to complete it. Separate save files on a single memory card eventually became the standard of the PS2 era.

Then a single event change everything. My little brother overwrote my FFX save file. HOURS of perfectionist, completionist work (sort of how i approach JRPGS) were simply gone. I was PISSED! I was caught between expressing how distraught i was and admitting it was a mistake.

And it was an honest mistake, 3 maybe 4 save files with the same character pictures side by side, the only difference being the location written in small text. This is when our parents decided that separate memory cards were needed. Now we each have a profile on our PS3.

The only problem that I had were corrupt save files in FO 3 and because of them I couldn't play DLC point lookout

Different factors means different outcome. Do I play the game lots? Is that that great I don't mind? Am I going to import save into next game (Mass Effect). All these change it. If I enjoy the game I probably won't mind. I just get to do it again. If it's a good I haven't played in years, no problem.

Mostly if it's game I don't play that much but I like to come back to it sometimes. I will rage. I wouldn't be bothered to spend the time to get it complete again. So when I want to mess around with all unlocks I won't be able.

Back when I played Final Fantasy X and I had played a bit over 100 hours. I was at the last save point before the final boss. Because I didn't really understand Blitzball recruiting system at start, I was screwed at it, but I still liked it. So I decided to start a new game to play blitzball well, and at the first save point, I accidentally overwrited my "real" save >.<

After that I much went "Hulk smash, Hulk destroy!!!".
