I'm so much snobbish towards games so much as I am selective. For example, I just plain don't touch RTS games because I'm horrendously terrible at them. Also I haven't really found one that sparked my interest. Or, I don't play military shooters for those same reasons. However, I don't look down on any genres. I might consider certain games to be shit, but I'm not about to openly hate on any given game unprovoked. That's just kind of petty.

As for certain types of gamers... well. The ones who play one or two incredibly mainstream games and then claim to be a complete nerd/geek. Those ones can go away.
I am with you on the RTS aspect. I'm 100% casual when it comes to them. I look down on most movie tie-in games and stuff that is just obvious shovel ware.

I'm also not a big fan of the whole "major league" gamer. I just look at video games as a form of entertainment, and it shouldn't be taken so seriously.

I admit, I refuse to play most mainstream stuff.

But it isn't due to me being a "hipster" or anything, I have several reasons.

1. Most mainstream stuff does not interest me (there are exceptions).

2. I tend to enjoy stuff that would fall under a normal person's radar.

3. Most mainstream stuff seems to be conforming.

No and no.

I'm willing to try anything at least once. (If it interests me that is)

And while there are some kinds of gamers that can be annoying to me, I'm not embarrassed by them.

Ehhhh I'm more of a music snob. Trying to hide my music elitism can be excruciating if I come across something which pisses me off.

Oh and "The Lucky Loser" you ever call luck when someone gets away on 100hp (or if they win a 1v1 on 100hp) you are dead to me. With all those damage stats under the hood you either have the damage or you don't. Simple as.
I hear you. Though that kind of gamer can be found everywhere. I've had that said a bunch of times after a duel in Tribes: Ascend. It's just a way of coping with victory being ripped from their grasp. Sore losers in a nutshell.

OT: Can't really consider myself too much of a snob. I'm fairly tolerant, but I guess I see myself as more of gamer than people that exclusively play sports games and the leading FPS of the month.

Oh, I hate gamers that sabotage their team to end games quicker and hopefully get on a better team next match. Those people suck.

For me its probably online shooters. Not necessarily the games themselves, more the community, I just don't like the way people behave towards each other, its just nasty. Its only a game after all. The language they use can barely be considered English except for the swearing. It doesn't help that a lot of players are in their teens (Either physically or mentally) and I am an older gamer. I just don't have time for their bullshit. Its why a lot of the time I stick to single player games, games are a form of escapism and I don't need some douche bag spoiling for me.

Note: I'm not dissing the entire online FPS community, just that sector. Anyone who has played an online shooter knows the kind of players I'm talking about.

I'm a snob towards people who play sports games, driving games and shooting games to the exclusion of all other genres and who go on to look down on those other genres as being somehow inferior without actually giving them a chance.

I rationalize it because I used to play those genres myself back in the ps1 era so I see my current state as a natural evolution and if they don't make the same steps but stay back where they currently are for ever they are missing something and to act superior based on that...well...deserves snobbishness imo. :p

I don't like the gamers who play Fifa 12 and hijack my account to buy "gold packs" with my gosh durn points. But I do like Fifa 12.

Car racing games are the worst genre to me, specifically NASCAR games. Hated Gran Turismo and all that Midnight LA Club blahblahtokyodriftblahblah.

Are there certain games or even whole genres that you just simply will never play and that you even look down on?

Are you embarrassed that certain types of game or gamer exist?
I do not like Fable or any of the games in the series. I just did not like the way its story felt so disjointed, and so I only got to being called "Chicken Chaser" before getting very bored.

I will never play any of the other Fable games.

I will never play any of the Uncharted games, simply because I look at it and do not like what I see. Possibly because of all the orgasmic love the games get from the community. Also, the main character looks like a douche and I'm sick of hearing Nolan North in everything I play. /hipstergamer

I will never play WoW because I find it to be one huge, boring waste of time. All of this from playing a new character for a total of ten minutes on my friend's computer.

I will never play Starcraft. Because screw Additional Pylons.

I will never play LoL. Because screw DEMACIA!

I will never, ever, play a sport videogame, because I find it idiotic to play a game about something which I could physically be doing instead. I'd much rather be doing something like killing dragons or fighting alien warlords with my bare hands.

I dislike elitist PC gamers who think that the only way to truly play a game is with a mouse and keyboard, and seem to say all but demanding a person go out and spend $1000+ to build a gaming rig so they can play Crysis "the way it is supposed to be."

I dislike console gamers who want to argue against factual evidence that PCs are, in fact, more powerful and all-around better for graphics and the like than any given console, and it will always be that way. Still, doesn't mean PC gamers need to be so uptight about what kind of setup we game on. Boo-hoo, the mean old game devs build most games with consoles in mind. Well, you have your mods to fix all that shit, and like to mention such on a regular basis. Build a bridge and get over it.

Obviously, I have some animosity toward PC gamers. Try not to take it personally if you are one. If you actually get offended then chances are you're not one of the people I am talking about.

I am frustrated by gamers who fall for the mainstream bullshit that passes for quality; they have fallen for the millions spent on pretty ads and propaganda, millions that were stripped from development costs. I am angry at the stupidity of such a wide swathe of people. There are better ways to spend your precious time here on this earth than playing another fucking final fantasy.

... So playing OTHER videogames ARENT a waste of time then?...

Um... I am sorry, but the reality is that it dosnt matters if you play COD or Angry Birds or Mario, they are ALL a "waste of time"...
Untrue, if you've played one COD you've played them all. If you've played one borderlands, you've played them all. A sequel is only worth playing if it adds something significant to the experience. Demon's souls -> dark souls is a good example, the successor is worth playing because it has created a significant experience that the original cant replicate.

If you're satisfied with same old shit, just more of it, well you are part of the problem, its called stagnation.

I guess I am part of the problem then, because I see absolutly no logic AT ALL in what you are saying.

So, if theres a sequel of a game I loved, And its admitidly "More of the same", then I shouldt buy it at all? I dont get it... If it IS really "More of the same", then it means I will love the game, just like the original.

Why fix what aitn broken? Oh wait. If you DO innovate then people will complain. If you dont, people will complain. The company just cant win.

I personally I am in for both form of sequels. If it is the same, then fine, I will most likely like the game as much as I liked the first (maybe even more, or less, that irrelevant thougt). If it innovates, well, I am looking forward to it as well.

Also, COD and Borderlands, despiste what they look, the sequels are quite different, just not in the outside. But for people who actually PLAY them, theres quite a few differences. Hell, theres plenty of people who hate an SPECIFIC game in the COD series, and prefer other COD games, if they are really the same game, why would they do that?

In COD case, theres different maps, perks, killstreaks, and stuff that someone whos blindly hating on the series just wouldt apreciate (Not saying you are, but theres people like that).

In Borderlands case... well, I havent got to play BL2 yet, but from the sound of it, theres quite a lof of new stuff in there too. Plus, new clases as well. Again, not worth saying it to someone who hasnt played the games, you NEED to play them to judge if the sequels are really that samey.

Again, opinions. This is all my opinion. And I belive the whole "stagnation" problem is just BS. If it is really true, I am proudly part of it because I dont have anything aganist sequels. Note that I dont have anything aganist innovative gameseaither . I like them both! just WHY cant we have both and be happy with it?

I can't stand JRPGs, Sports games, or medieval fantasy games, and MMOs need to just die in a fire. Im also not a fan of large developers that make games for the money and not the art of it. Gearbox did a great job with borderlands, the first game was an unexpected success and the sequel is better in every way, exactly what the fans of the first game wanted. 2k (and valve) are a few of the publishers that consistently release quality content. EA and Activision are soulless beasts that are strangling the video game industry.

With games, not that bad.
I'll play anything. I don't care too much what others play.
And I love flash games.

With music, I probably seem like a bit of a hipster/snob, but it's just me talking extensively about what I love.

Edit: Yikes, this thread should be retitled "Increase overall disdain for each other even more"

:p

I'm a bit of massive gaming hipster. I'll get huge amounts of disdain (which I will show) to anyone who plays Call of Duty now or a non-arcade sports game.
Do. Some. Goddamn. Research.

Then you'll eventually become a gaming snob. I started out as more of a music snob because music is easy to understand and enjoy, comparatively. Music is a lot of math with artistic flourish.

My next snobbery was movies. It's considerably harder to quantify what makes a good movie, and music is actually a part of that. Genuine music snobs are doomed to eventually become movie snobs.

And our most recent sensory-assaulting art form is video games. I've come to conclusion that gamers MUST be as demanding of our video games as the consumers of other art forms are. I realize that just like with music and movies, the game industry WILL be dominated by vapid garbage, but that should ever stop us game snobs from being as vocal as possible and throwing our money around as liberally as possible (when the studio earned it).

Portal, Memento, Sophisticated Lady, Deliverance (Opeth or John Boorman), Mass Effect(1), The Toys of Men, Goodfellas, The Avengers, Little Fugue in G minor, Gothic 2, Dogma, Wretch (PTH), SWIV: A New Hope (that's right): These are all titles that are the pinnacle of their respective mediums, and I, as a snob, love them all.

And seriously, Protest the Hero is a bunch of fucking geniuses.

Edit to clarify. Being a snob is not being a hipster. Hipsters don't like things that are popular regardless of quality because they're douchebags with soul-patches or goatees, with ironic glasses... and maybe fedoras ;p

As you can see from my pic, clean shaven, AND I hang out with the guy that made Clerks, so fuck yeah to me.

I can't stand people who think all old games suck just because they're old with no other reason given. Fuck you.

I want point and click adventures to die in a fire. I assume there would be one that would suit my tastes somewhere out there but i've yet to find it and the rest are all so fucking bad.

I also dislike a few types of people within LoL (and probably other MOBA games in general) namely, the egotistical dicks who are only in this gig to massage their e-peens by owning the scrubs, usually in a solo lane. Mostly top for some bizarre reason (they naturally freak out and mash the allchat with insults when their overly try hard-y ways get them killed) the guys who go like 0/4 then blame everyone but themselves (OMG THIS JUNGLER IS SO BAD! UNINSTALL PLS) then there're the people who decide that they have to be the ones to carry their team for no reason.

Oh and "The Lucky Loser" you ever call luck when someone gets away on 100hp (or if they win a 1v1 on 100hp) you are dead to me. With all those damage stats under the hood you either have the damage or you don't. Simple as.

Seriously LoL is pretty much a lession in human psychology.

Oh and when someone says "trust me it works" when they pick an unconventional character and/or build for where they're supposed to be going (Support Swain) don't trust them, it never works. Not in solo queues anyway. Full ranked teams can do whatever since they should be on VOIP most of the time.
i find your lack of faith in my tank tf build diturbing, seriously though it can work, never understood why people are so scared of new tactics.

on topic: why yes i am a momumental snob, never liked people who want everything to be simple.
and then they say "well sometimes i just wanna sit down and play a game" wel go play one of the millions of generic cod shooters then you drooling fool, and stop trying to ruin fallout.

I'm not scared of new tactics exactly... It's just the fact that I can't tell if this random guy has mastered this new build perfectly or if he just decided it looks good on paper and hopped into a Ranked game with it.

Exactly it can work, but how do I know whether this guy really knows what he's doing or if he's just following a guide blindly? I can't so I have to be wary of new things

I try to be optimistic when some guy instalocks solotop Vayne against a Malphite. I even try to rationalise it by saying her true damage could give her an advantage... Wait no Malph is 8/0 by 20 minutes and Vayne is raging at the jungler for not giving a double kill to the crazy fed Malph.

Whoops!

To be fair I have tried Atmog's Fate and it's hilarious but if I want to go top i'll just pick Irelia or Fiora because Irelia is fun as hell and Fiora is arguably Broken Tier on a good day with a load of AD runes.

If Wild Cards aren't chunking people you're building him wrong I feel. Atmog's TF is the best backdoorer in the game though.

The only genre I really don't play is Racing/Sports unless it is a Mario sport game or Burnout. Pretty much everything else is stuff I like.

Nah. Not a gaming snob one bit, at least not any more. I used to just rage at people who liked CoD but now I just don't care and let it slide because... well... they're human and are allowed to have an opinion :D
