How racist, sexist, or other "ist's" are your relatives or aquaintances?

My uncle, bless his heart, told me once when I was about ten or so that homosexuals were going to be the ruin of the earth, that when the world was populated with them we as a species would die out. He told me that San Fransisco clocks had 13 numbers and four hands, and that was why gays were drawn to the area. He also told me they were evil because they were vegetarians.

I later found this whole story so hilariously stupid that I wrote an essay on it once in high school. It recieved an A-... Well, I found the essay after digging through my old high school crap and I was curious. Who do you know that you would like to bring into the spotlight?

Well, I remember a friend breaking someone's femur for saying something about his Chinese ancestry ...

"You shouldn't be racist, because racism is a crime, and crime is for black people."

One of the many (tasteless) jokes my grandad tells me on a daily basis. He's not an actual bona fide racist, he just likes to make jokes surrounding taboo subjects.

My mum's bisexual, so I've grown up in quite a liberal and open-minded environment. My family just seem to be relaxed about everything really.

I've grown up in such a racist family, I'm surprised I didn't turn out worse than I am. I would shudder to think what my family would do to me if I was gay or married someone other than a white catholic church going proper woman. Oh, wait. I married a Russian. They're white, too, though right? Apparently not to my uncle who forgot the Cold War ended. He's still trying to get my dad to disown me, lol. I'm used to the animosity, though. Unfortunately...

I'm sorry to say it, but your uncle sounds like an outright **** O,o

Parts of my family are quite racist, my mother hails from the sotuhern parts of Sweden, and she grew up on a farm (my grandfather is a farmer), most of them are quite racist, not activley racist, but rather this underlying, EXTREME prejudice, and you can often catch them throwing around remarks about "niggers"and "camel-drivers" (<--- Middle-eastern immigrants).

I've also found my dad being slightly sexist at times, but also here an underlying tone, rather than saying activley "women belong in the kitchen".

They aren't in the slightest (except for dad's side of the family, but I don't really count them). True, they're politically incorrect to an extreme degree, but it's all for the sake of humor.

My gran is a little racist, but that's because she's an oldie. And a raging *****.

I also have a friend who is slightly homophobic, but only against gay dudes. He was brought up in an orphanage, so he learned that's the way to be if you don't want to be picked on.

The rest of the people I associate myself with are, as far as I'm aware, open-minded, like myself.

They're not. My dad will make the occasional sexist joke about women assuming you can read their minds, but that's the extent of it.
Although my grandfather doesn't like the Germans very much. He's Jewish, so it's somewhat understandable.

same as my Nan!, everyone calls her Nanny Lee (everyone) out of respect, she was teaching my nephews racist songs, and when we found out we told her she shouldn't be racist, her reply word for word was
"i'm 83, i've lived long enough and earned the right to be racist, and if anyone doesn't like it ... I'M SENILE!"

Being a mutt, racism is something my family deals with a lot. If I have to deal with one more person who can't understand that my brother looks like my dad and I look like my mom and we are full-blooded siblings I'm gonna puke. When my parents pulled the 'guess who's coming to dinner' routine most members of both families kept their mouths shut but there were a few dissenters. Now both sides have been enlightened and have learned the value of tolerance, not to mention individuality.

Now homophobic, that's another story. The part of my family that is black southern baptist called upon my gay cousin's white boyfriend to be a pallbearer at my grandmother's funeral. And the northeastern white side of the family still can't grasp that the world isn't going to light on fire because of gays and that all of my cousin's problems (drugs and criminality) are because he's a damn psychopath (literally) not because he's gay. So it just depends on the issues and the time I think.

Nearly all of my friends sound racist when they voice their political views, they're nearly all going into the R.A.F so they're nationalist, patriotic, resent immigration (for the right reasons) and bless them they don't articulate well.

I spend half my time explaining to others why they're not racist... just very bad at getting their views across.

My mother is somewhat racist. She always assumes a thief or murderer is foreign. That's all though, and she's not overly offensive about anyone, she just always assumes, every time.

Well, I know someone [I hate], who thinks Arabs are satanic camel onkeys and the gazza should be nuke, even if the intire shout of Israel will be ruined, as long as the arabs will die[ but that kinda normal in Israel].
And he kinda thinks the same about homosexuals, he call people gay all the time, so once I asked him what so bad about being gay, he laughts for a few moments, then reilazed I'm seruise, and walked away in diguest.

EDIT:

My grandfather's a racist bastard.

He seriously thinks that pretty much every black guy on the planet is either a tribal warrior, a gangster, or a terrorist (in Mr. Obama's case). And pretty every black woman on the planet is either a tribal woman or a hooker or a really good hooker (in Mrs. Obama's case).

He also thinks that all women with even the slightest Hispanic/Latino lineage are illegal immigrants (if they're in the US) and will end up fat and ugly when they're older, and that all men with even the slightest Hispanic\Latino lineage are illegal immigrants and are lazy retards because they obviously couldn't make it in their original country.

My uncle is homophobic to a serious degree. Not as bad as the OP, but still pretty bad. He lumps gays in with atheists and theists-who-don't-have-the-exact-same-beliefs-as-him, and thinks that nothing any of them say can be believed, and is probably an outright lie. That sucks because, you know, I'm an atheist, and have a good friend who happens to be gay.

Fortunately, I grew up with my dad, mostly, who is very open-minded and tolerant of other people. Hm, and for some strange reason, the people on my mom's side of the family (except my mom) hate my dad. They literally think he deliberately deprives me of food and supplies and lets me go anywhere I want (he does, as long as I'm home by 9:00) because he just doesn't care about me (he makes me get back by 9:00 (unless I warn him beforehand and give him a time), so he obviously cares at least a little bit, or maybe he just trusts me to keep myself alive on my own, something everyone else doesn't seem to understand. And they hate him because he never brought me to church and turned me into an atheist. Strange, he never said anything about my religious beliefs, just told me that I shouldn't trust everything I hear/read, and to critically observe the things around me, which seem like benefits instead of heathenism.

Wait, this has gone and turned into a rant. Sorry.

My grandmother was born in a racist home. I correct her everytime we speak. She calls natives with "savages" and black people with the "N" word. She doesn't do it by hate for another race. It's just a very bad habit.

Then again, I explained Atheism to her. She doesn't understand how people reject the idea of god.
