How would gay marriage affect your life?

It wouldn't affect me. Though, it can can go both ways (pun slightly intended). Since it wouldn't affect me, I could vote for it, or I could vote against simply because I don't give a shit, and it does nothing for me.

Both sides are basically just fighting over a word (whether it should be called a marriage or not). Therefore it makes both sides stupid.

The only true way to not look like an ass in some way or another, is by complete indifference.

On a final note, I'm starting to lean towards pro gay marriage because I am so frickin tired of hearing about it. 'Give the annoying kid what it wants', as they say. I think there are more pressing matters that need our attention.

You could inscribe the amount of difference it would make in my life on the side of a quark.

Not being constantly bombarded with the insipid arguments of the right-wing "morals and values" crowd would certainly improve my quality of life.

Unfortunately, such people are not just going to go away; if their outrage-du-jour is not gay marriage, it'll be something else. Bisexuals. Polyamory. Jews.

Seriously though, the so-called "War on Christmas" has apparently been going on for decades, and it just needs to go, along with just about every Christmas song recorded since 1969. Except ones by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Those guys rock.

Anyway, Happy Hannukah. Latkes. Applesauce. Yes. L'chaim.

Gay marriage wouldn't affect my life at all. I'd have to believe in marriage to begin with. I think most people who have a problem with gay marriage believe that it is somehow an attack on their own unions, that somehow the sanctity of their marriage is called into question. But I guess some people really need the validation of the church to make their personal relationships work.

I'm sure someone has said both of these things already but here goes:
1) I can actually get married.
2) The divorce rate will go up and be the process will become bitchier :-D

Well I might get married some day, then me and my husband would prance down the street naked or something - whatever Christian parents think married gay people do.
Dude, I would totally join you to do that, just to troll people.

OT: Not in anyway at all, unless the girl I'm interested in decides she's gay, in which case, Damn.

Well, for starters, my wife would be pissed.

...even though in your examples I may not be personally affected, I recognise that a woman, a child, an innocent bystander is being harmed and through my posession of basic human empathy my morals are offended.
Really? What innocent bystander is harmed by a 19yo drinking alcohol, or by a duuuude smokin' wweeeed, maaaaan? What pedestrian is harmed by a motorist driving 75, and what vegan by my consumption of a delectable veal parmigiana dinner?

[/serious]
I misspoke there a bit. When I said "All of these" I should have said "All of these I personally disagree with". My argument still stands that I can be morally opposed to peadophillia even though I am not a child, but have no qualms with Gay Marriage because it doesn't affect me personally atm due to harm caused and not caused in each case.

but to go through each example:

Well, the 19yo drinking alcohol isn't a good example as I am personally against the drinking age being 21 in America, but being Australian, where it's 18, (and I think it should be 16) my opinion on American drinking laws might not hold much weight. Change your question to being about underage drinking, people are harmed by fostering a drinking culture in early adolescence which causes more instances of alcoholism, drunk driving and alcohol-related violence.

As for the weed thing, again, not a good example as I am pro-legalisation as it is a relatively mild substance that has very few side effects and risks compared with harder substances, and legalisation but regulation will take money out of the hands of criminals. I am against harder drugs because of the increased risk of death or injury to the user or bystanders.

Speeding, again, bad example because there's nothing wrong with speed in controlled circumstances, that's why we can go fast on country roads. It's reckless driving that increases the risk of accident and harm that I take issue with.

The vegan thing is a bit trickier. The question was "If you were a vegan, why would making meat illegal seem wrong to you if it didn't affect you?", not "why should meat be illegal?". I'm not a vegan so I can't speak for them, but if I was I would be against the criminalisation of meat because I recognise that my choice would be my own and not give me license to infringe upon the rights of others.

It wouldn't?

Though I'd like to see marriage as a social construct gotten rid off completely <.< But frankly marriage doesn't affect me at all and it's a personal choice like getting a tattoo so I don't see why my word should have any impact at all on marriage between two people who wish it to occur.

Of course arranged and indentured marriage I'm kinda opposed to ... but once again ... not my problem.

Edit: I will add that marriage ceremonies are pretty but frankly if I were to be married I'm not letting my spouse get to wear the beautiful gown. If I'm going to spend 6 grand on a dress and shoes, I want to wear it.

Simply put, it wouldn't. Gay people have just as much of a right as straight people to be miserable together for the rest of their lives if they so chose.

And i am not saying i believe but, hypothetically, if the christians and the bible are right, then gay marriage won't make them go to hell any faster than already being gay will, so fighting it is stupid.
Your the first Non christian I've met who grasps that. And I've only met like five Christians as well who grasp that.
Actually I am a Christian, I just have a lot of gay friends and know a lot about the subject because my friend who campaigns for gay rights uses me to test his debate speeches.
Congratulations you just lost the title of first and instead received the title of 6th. very impressive.
Also so if your a christian whats with the "i am not saying i believe but, hypothetically, if the christians and the bible are right"? That sounds like your directly saying you're not a christian.

If it were legal, one of my closest friends would be allowed to visit their dying spouse in the hospital. Of course that could be due to some random bullshit on the doctors end, but I've seen it happen in all states but those who have 'legalized' it. My friend would also have the same rights as those who are married. You would not believe how many things are cut out simply because it isn't called 'marriage'.

I'd also be able to marry the love of my life, though apparently I'm under even further scrutiny for it since I am a FtM!

OT: It would affect my and my friends life greatly, but only because we are gay/lesbian.

Edit: Just remembered: Doctors wouldn't let her in because she was not a relative or officially part of the family. Thus they are not legally allowed to have her enter the room.

UGH!!! This thread is a PERFECT example of why this site needs "agree" & "disagree" buttons on each post. I've wasted my time reading 5 pages of people saying the exact same thing. "Gays would be happy. I'm straight, so it wouldn't effect me." I apologize to anyone who posted on the next 5 pages if they had anything NEW to actually add. I didn't read it because the probability there would be anything new seemed extremely low. Come to think of it, the odds of anyone reading what I typed are probably pretty low too. Oh well. Figured I'd actually add to the conversation anyway.

OT, I was going to say something, but on 2nd thought I decided why bother? It would just bounce off all the closed minded liberals here. (Not saying everyone is that, but a lot sure seem to be.) Plus, I figure the odds are equally likely everyone else will quit reading before they even get to my post.

My mom is a lesbian, though she has never talked about wanting to marry the partner she's been with for a decade now, so I have a feeling it wouldn't directly affect my life either way.

In terms of belief, I think that people should be able to marry whoever they would like. Someones preference shouldn't determine the rights they have.

Personally it wouldnt affect me. I would feel awkward sure but it wouldnt affect me personally. However they cannot be all in my face about it. I do not personally support homosexuality and they have to respect my decision just like i respect their's. dont start none wont be none.
