Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I think it is still valid since Natal isn't out yet and I don't want to start a new one... Besides, it is not a month since the last post.
Here is a little bit of my Wii expirences with the Motion Controller:
Wii Sport: I like the Tennis thing, but there are only 3 ways to move that controller. The bowling is more like hit or miss if you throw it like a normal bowling ball, or you break your hand while being accurate. Golf and the rest is just plainly random.
Brawl: Used the Gamecube controller faster than you could say "Hold the remote sideways". Also saves batteries.
Mairo Kart Wii: Tried 3 Races with the steering wheel, gave up and used the Gamecube controller.
Wario Ware: Never played it again after a friend walked in on me and laughed for 4 minutes and 31 seconds. This is also my problem with Natal, you look just stupid. Even in that demo video..
The PS3 SIXAXIS is even worse, since you need to switch between 2 control sets (Same problem that the DS has)
LittleBigPlanet: Motion Control is used for looking around and doing the pelvic thrust.., fine with me.
Heavenly Sword: Switched it off after having to use "Aftertouch" once, the stick makes a lot more sense.
InFamous: SIXAXIS controls one attack, works well, but could have been done with any of the sticks.
You really want to push the boundaries of console gaming, give me mouse control. I bet I could out-click even the fastest guy with the Wii-Remote-Pointer and it is even more precise and well tested.
For consoles the best would be (Example FPS controls)
Left hand: Joystick for movement(strafe) with 3 Buttons (L1, L2(Main Trigger), Start Select) and POV for Thumb
Right hand: Mouse (Camera/Aim) with 6 Buttons (Left (R2 (analog), Right (R1), Middle (Y)+(Scrollwheel) and Thumb (A B X))
Maybe the A B X Y also on the joystick somewhere for jumping.
I could play any sandbox, 3rd and 1st person shooter that way. For platform and racing the controller is fine like it is.
(Or the other way aorund for lefties)
The problem with console controls is, while I like them a lot for racing and platforming, you can't use A, B, X, Y and the right stick for aiming. This is seldom a problem, but in games like Saints Row it is a hassle, since you need to shoot fromt the car, where R2 is fire, RS is aiming, A is accelerate (the problem) and LS is for steering. I know there is a different contol set somewhere. GTA IV is a lot better in this respect, but still not as good as aiming with mouse, since there is no auto-aim in the car.
Back to Natal: I don't see any good points about it:
Some say it will give developers more options and ways to control the game. But as far as I can see it is actually less, since all the buttons and sticks are removed and if you also have to hold a controller in your hand you will not be able to wiggle around as much. And how do you move, my home has limited dimensions...
Well it makes you stand up and actually move around which improves fitness a tiny bit.
